Visiting a winery is a fun experience, but if it’s your first time (yay for trying something new!), you should know that there are certain rules to follow while there. It’s (too) easy to get drunk on all those delicious samples and you don’t want to ruin your or anyone else’s day by being inconsiderate. Here’s how to have the best time at a winery.

Spitting

Sometimes, you should spit the wine you tasted. Other times, you can just enjoy it. Spitting some of the wines you try lets you enjoy the ones you like the most without getting drunk fast.

Don’t Wear Perfume

Wine tasting is just as much about enjoying the smells, and if you wear perfume, it can ruin the experience for everyone there.

Swirling

Swirling is fairly easy and we recommend practicing with some water at home. Swirling is important because it helps lifts some of the aromas in wine and it’s also a fun ceremonial thing to do.

Be Polite

You may be more interested in catching up with your friend than indulging in the experience of wine tasting, but don’t be that person. Respect the host and act interested even if you’re not.

Splitting the Check

Instead of waiting for the end to tell your server that you will be splitting the check, it would be better if you told them that before you order anything.

Not Saying Anything About Food You Don’t Like

You may think it would be rude to tell the server or chef that you didn’t like the food in person, but it’s much worse to write it in a public review or to spread the word to your friends without letting them know first.

Picking a Table Yourself

If you walk in and immediately go to a free table to seat yourself, you’ll probably create an awkward situation and have the server move you. They have a system to make sure you get the best experience.
