Flowers are such a fun ingredient to use, and a lot of people don’t know that many kinds of flowers are actually totally edible! Try these out today in your own kitchen and see how much fun it can be to play around with flowers!

Pansies

Pansies are a flower that a lot of people don’t realize are edible, but they are and they’re amazing to use in cooking! They can sometimes taste a bit minty, so they work really well with other herbs and especially in salads!

Lavender

Whether you like it in your cakes, your lattes, or your cocktails, lavender is an amazing flavor to be able to use to make your favorite dishes taste that much better. You can actually eat the buds, or you can just soak them in a liquid to infuse the flavor!

Roses

Roses are such a beautiful flower, and they smell and taste just as good! Rose is an amazing ingredient to use in your cooking, and even utilizing a few petals in a dish can make all the difference! They go great in sweet applications like ice cream or even grilled fruit to add a little bit of a light flavor but experiment with them in Middle Eastern dishes too where they often use a sweet or floral note to tie everything together.

Dandelions are much more than just a weed, it is a flower that has been made into wine for hundreds of years in Europe. It is said that it has Celtic roots, but has recently made a comeback. Here is a simple step-by-step process on how to make this historic wine.

Ingredients

3 quarts dandelion blossom, without any green part, 1 gallon of water, 2 organic oranges, 1 organic lemon, 3 pounds of sugar, 1 package wine yeast, and 1 pound of raisins.

Method

  1. Bring the water to a boil and pour it over the dandelions which should be in a separate pot. Cover and let it steep for 3 days
  2. Zest 1 lemon and 1 orange, and then just regularly peel the rest. Cut the fruit into slices.
  3. Add the zest and peels to the dandelion mixture and bring to a boil
  4. Strain the liquid and dissolve the sugar. Let it cool.
  5. Add the yeast, raisins, and the citrus slices. Cover with a towel and secure with a rubber band.
  6. Once the mixture has stopped bubbling, about 1-2 weeks, use several layers of cheesecloth or a flour sack and strain it.
  7. Pour into sterilized bottles and place a deflated balloon on top to make sure fermentation has stopped
  8. Once the balloons stay deflated for 24 hours, they’re ready to be corked, stored, and enjoyed!
