What’s your favorite food to eat for breakfast? For most people, the answer is some combination of eggs, bacon, toast, and cereal. But why do we typically consider these foods breakfast foods?

When you think about it, it’s clear that you can eat virtually any food in the world and fill up for breakfast, and yet we tend to repeat several breakfast options again and again, not even thinking about introducing something else. This, of course, depends on where you live and is different in different cultures.

Western breakfast staples like eggs and sausage date back to Ancient Rome, though people’s habits were very different back then. Over time, we developed the need for a nutritious and fast breakfast because our lives kept getting busier and busier.

Cereal became a breakfast staple thanks to the food industry that promoted them as healthy for a long time. If you’re following food and health trends, then you know that cereal and some other well-known breakfast items (like orange juice) are decreasing in popularity and being replaced with different things, like porridge and plant-based milk.

A peanut butter jelly sandwich is a favorite snack of millions of people. Here are 3 things you probably didn’t know about it.

It’s Pretty Healthy

Two tablespoons of peanut butter will give you 190 calories, 7 grams of protein, 2 grams of fiber, and 3 grams of sugar. It’s a calorie-dense food, but if you don’t eat too much it’s okay.

It Used to be a Delicacy

The first reference of a peanut butter & jelly sandwich comes from the Boston Cooking School magazine’s 1901 issue. Peanut butter was expensive back then and it was served in fancy tearooms.

Depending on the type of bars you’re going to, you may have seen a jar of pickled eggs on top of a counter. These hard-boiled eggs are soaked in vinegar with herbs and spices and are a staple of old-school bars. But why pickled eggs of all things? According to Tales of the Cocktail, it was a marketing ploy at the beginning.

New Orleans bars introduced a new policy in the 1860s – free lunches. They wanted to make their customers thirstier, so they would order more drinks but also prevent them from getting too drunk by drinking on an empty stomach.

Eggs were a convenient choice, so they rolled with it. Over time, bars switched from plain hard-boiled eggs to pickled ones, because they could keep them longer, and they were neatly stored in a jar with shells already removed.

Around the same time, German saloons in the US started serving pickled eggs with beer, helping make both more popular around the States.

Well, not exactly. As Fermat’s Library’s (@fermatslibrary) tweet shows, there are 28 more square inches of pizza in an 18-in pie than in two 12-in pies.

This is exactly why you should have paid attention at geometry classes in high school. Even though your logic tells you to go with two medium pizzas to get more food, a simple math formula proves that wrong.

In case crust is your favorite part, you’re better off with two smaller pizzas than one big one. The tweet below clarifies that.
