As crazy as it seems today, foods like pineapple and celery were once considered luxurious items and even status symbols. Apparently, using food as a sign of a certain lifestyle is not a new phenomenon that appeared with social media. Many people love to share their meals on Instagram these days, but we can argue that people did crazier things for food a few centuries ago.

For example, in the 18th century, it wasn’t uncommon to rent a pineapple in order to impress party guests. This was because pineapples were considered a luxury and the price of one went up to today’s $8,000 at some point.

Celery wasn’t as expensive, but it definitely had a moment in history. The Victorian era people used to keep it in special glass vases and display at visible places. Celery dishes were considered a delicacy and they were the main thing at every dinner party. Whenever you’re not feeling like eating celery, remember that the first-class guests on Titanic had it as an exclusive treat.

There’s something magical about old restaurants, especially the ones with interesting stories and versatile tradition. How exciting is it to dine at the same place where your favorite writers or historical figures used to eat hundreds of years ago? We picked three of the oldest restaurants in the world that are definitely worth a visit.

Sobrino de Botín, Madrid

Sobrino de Botín is located in the capital of Spain where it has been standing since 1725. According to the Guinness World Records, this is the oldest restaurant in the world. It was initially called Casa Botín and got its current name from the second owner.

Union Oyster House, Boston

Serving customers since 1826, Union Oyster House is located in Boston and is considered the oldest working restaurant in the U.S.

Zum Franziskaner, Stockholm

This restaurant was opened in 1421. Today, it’s located in a newer building, but the food is apparently authentic and nearly identical to what it was in the 15th century.

Rules, London

Established in 1798, Covent Garden-based restaurant Rules offers traditional English specialties that you must try if you get the chance.
