If you’ve ever craved a dish that’s both comforting and downright delicious, Shepherd’s Pie is your answer. But here’s the twist—we’re not sticking to the usual script. Today, we’re going to show you how to make the timeless classic and then jazz it up with three incredible upgrades. Let’s jump in.

Ingredients

For the Filling

  • 1 pound ground beef or lamb
  • 1 onion
  • 2 carrots
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef or vegetable broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil

For the Mashed Potatoes

  • 4 large russet potatoes
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • Salt and pepper

Instructions

  1. In a skillet, heat oil. Add onion, carrots, and garlic. Saute until softened. Add your meat. Cook until browned. Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and peas.
  2. Pour in broth and simmer for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Boil potatoes until tender, then mash with butter and milk.
  4. Preheat oven to 400°F. Spread filling in a baking dish, top with mashed potatoes, and bake 20-25 minutes until golden and bubbling.

Upgrade Idea

  1. After spreading the mashed potatoes, sprinkle a generous layer of shredded cheddar cheese on top before baking.
  1. Infuse your mashed potatoes with extra flavor by adding minced garlic and chopped fresh herbs like rosemary, thyme, or chives.
  1. Swap out the traditional mashed potatoes for creamy mashed sweet potatoes. Their natural sweetness pairs beautifully with the savory filling.

Shepherd’s pie is a classic British dish that tends to divide people. You either like it, or you don’t. It’s named as such because it uses lamb meat, but a common variation is Cottage Pie, using beef. Some enjoy the dish due to the texture and fusion of different flavors, while others find it a bit too much.

When judging the dish, you shouldn’t base your opinion on store-bought shepherd’s pie. Instead, make one yourself so you can get a clear idea of how you feel about it. Here is how to do it.

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 pounds of ground beef (or lamb)
  • 4 cups mashed potatoes
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 cups mixed veggies (carrots and peas)
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 onion
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper

Instructions:

  1. Cook the ground beef in a pan over medium heat until browned.
  2. Mince the onion and garlic and add them to the pan. Sauté for several minutes until they become tender.
  3. Mix in the tomato paste, ground beef, onions, and garlic, and stir until everything is well combined.
  4. Add mixed veggies, broth, and Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Optionally, you can add other spices and herbs like rosemary and thyme.
  5. Bring the mixture to a boil and then simmer for around five minutes until the veggies are cooked and the liquid is slightly reduced.
  6. Preheat the oven to 375F.
  7. Place the meat and veggies mixture in a baking dish and spread mashed potatoes on top.
  8. Bake between 20 and 25 minutes. You want the top layer to become golden brown.
  9. Let Sheppard’s pie cool off, get yourself a slice, and dig in.
