Can you believe that the beginning of the decade of the 2000s was twenty years ago? While it might seem that less time has passed since then, we sure have lived a lot of different trends and events since that decade.

Do you remember which food trends influenced this decade’s culinary landscape? Here are three that you might need to be reminded of.

Sliders

Sliders were once quite possibly the most popular “trending” option on restaurant menus everywhere. These mini sandwiches were often served in groups of 3 or 4, with options from hamburgers to buffalo chicken sandwiches being served up to hungry diners throughout the planet.

Atkins Diet

While the keto diet is now normalizing low-carb, high-protein eating patterns, that distinction once belonged to the popular Atkins Diet. Keto diets don’t let you eat virtually any carbohydrates, but at least you could sneak a little bit in on the now old-fashioned Atkins plan.

Cupcakes

Cupcakes have been popular for a long time, and continue to be popular, but things really took off in the 2000s. Mini cupcakes, gourmet cupcakes, and any type of these sweet, frosting-topped pastries were able to be found anywhere during this decade.

Breakfast cereals these days just aren’t quite like the ones of yesteryear, are they? Back in the days before health regulations and nutrition facts, cereals manufactured by companies like Quaker and General Mills were delicious and full of sugar and unhealthy ingredients.

Take a look at these four breakfast cereals from the 1960s that will take you on a delicious trip back in time.

Quisp

If you were a child in the 1960s, there’s no doubt that you would have tried this sickeningly sweet treat. Made with cornmeal and sugary syrup, this gave kids all kinds of energy back in the day. It’s still available in specialty shops and online to this day!

They do still make this, just online. #quisp #cereal

Buttercups

Have you ever seen a breakfast cereal with intricate shapes made to look like flowers? Buttercups were attention-grabbing for this reason, and the lightly sweet flavor that was like a better version of corn flakes was nothing to sneeze at either.

Kream Krunch

With the space race craze hitting the world in the 1960s, it’s no surprise that this Frankenstein-esque creation hit the market for two years in the middle of the decade. This cereal contained o-shaped oats as well as bits of freeze-dried ice cream, which was all the rage due to its use in the space shuttle.

The 1980s were a weird time for food, and for society in general. Various trends that look strange now swept across dinner plates and drink glasses in the decade of Bon Jovi, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and big hair.

These were some of the most nostalgic food trends from the 80s, and you can still find them today!

Chicken Kyiv

The Iron Curtain didn’t stop Chicken Kyiv from becoming incredibly popular across the globe in the 80s. This dish, originating in a luxury hotel in the Ukranian capital, brought the mixture of chicken breast with butter, herbs, and breadcrumbs to a worldwide audience.

Wine Coolers

Do Bartles and Jaymes ring a bell to you? This American company helped to popularize wine coolers, which are a mix of wine and fruit juices, in the 1980s. They became a favorite drink for parties and summer gatherings, and are still sold today.

Sloppy Joes

Now known as a dreaded sandwich on school cafeteria plates, Sloppy Joes were all the rage back in the eighties. Manwich, a prepared sauce consisting of ketchup, onions, Worcestershire sauce, and other seasonings, was combined with ground pork or beef to make these sandwiches.

Ah, vintage air travel. This bygone era of luxurious plane rides that featured spacious seats, friendly flight attendants, and well-dressed passengers are long gone, unfortunately. Now, people are generally packed like sardines into uncomfortable planes and offered minimal services unless they’ve paid an arm and a leg for the first-class service.

However, air travel wasn’t always like this. While we might be served a meal that looks like a microwave TV dinner on long-haul flights these days, in the 1960s, the reality was much different.

Back in these days, all passengers traveled in the same class and were essentially treated like kings. Free alcoholic drinks without a limit flowed like water from a fountain, and the food that was served doesn’t resemble today’s airplane eats in any way.

Passengers on airlines such as Sweden’s SAS were treated to gourmet seafood such as lobsters and prawns. On all airlines, hors d’oeuvres like chicken legs and delicious bruschetta were handed out like candy on Halloween night.

Looking at how people used to eat on airplanes, I think I would have booked a plane ticket only for the eating experience! What do you think?
