It is common to eat a whole fish at new year because the Chinese word for fish (yu) sounds similar to that for “abundance”. While catfish is the most traditional, the dish can also be made using sea bass or carp. Steam the fish and drizzle it with hot oil made with ginger, scallions, coriander, and soy sauce.

Dumplings

Not only are dumplings delicious, but they also represent wealth and longevity, making them an important food for this time of the year. Fill your dumplings with anything from pork to chicken, prawn, mushrooms, scallions, and cabbage. Then, steam or fry.

Longevity Noodles

As the name suggests, these noodles, known as Yi Mein, symbolize longevity. According to Chinese tradition, the longer the noodle, the luckier you’ll be, with some measuring as long as two feet! Stir-fry the noodles with chicken, mushrooms, green beans, and ginger.
