Did you know that you can make a bigger batch of cookie dough and just freeze some of it to have ready when you need it? Most of us know that we can freeze cookies, but we haven’t considered freezing the dough. Turns out, it’s actually a better alternative because you’ll have the dough ready when you want to bake some fresh cookies.

How to Do It

Use your favorite cookie dough recipe to prepare it. If it requires chilling, put it in the fridge for a while. Get the baking sheet and drop spoonfuls of dough onto it, then put in the freezer for around an hour. Remove and transfer the individual dough balls into plastic bags. Don’t forget to write the date: the frozen dough should be used within 3 months. Once you want to bake the cookies, simply transfer them from the plastic bag to the baking pan with no need to thaw them first.

As you can see, you need to have a relatively big freezer that can hold the entire baking sheet for the first part of the freezing process. If your cookie dough balls aren’t completely solid before you transfer them to plastic bags, they will basically turn into one big cookie and that’s not something you want to put in the oven and bake!

Having a frozen pie in the fridge to whip up when you need it is definitely a good idea. Here’s how to freeze a homemade pie so you can bake it later. It’s absolutely possible to freeze a pre-made pie to enjoy warm later, but you need to know which pies freeze well and which ones don’t.

Freeze

Fruit pies are typically the ones that freeze great. This means that you can put together your apple pie, strawberry pie, or blueberry pie weeks in advance and it will be the same as if you just made it.

Don’t Freeze

On the other hand, custard and cream-based pies probably won’t look and taste great after freezing. They contain ingredients that will separate after thawing which can ruin the whole recipe. However, you can store them in the fridge for a few days if you still want to make them in advance.

How To

You now know which pies can be frozen, but how do you do it? Make the pie just like you normally would and wrap it tightly or pack it in a freezer bag. You can store fruit pies like this for 2-3 months. When you’re ready to bake it, remove from the wrapper and bake it without thawing it.

Virtually any food can go in the freezer if you want to store it for a longer time, but you should know how to prep which foods for freezing. Here are some tips for freezing different types of food.

Use Plastic Bags

Avoid using glass containers as they can crack from the temperature change. You can get special freezer bags or use resealable plastic containers, depending on the type of food you want to freeze.

Individual Portions

Before freezing, divide your food into smaller portions that are good for one or two people. This will prevent food waste and help your food defrost faster.

Remove Air

Remember to remove the excess air from bags or containers to reduce freezer burn. A vacuum sealer might be a good investment if you prep and freeze a lot of food.

Freeze Cold Foods

If you want to put the soup leftovers from lunch in the freezer, make sure it’s cold before you do it. Putting hot food in the freezer is a potential health hazard.

If you don’t already have a freezer at home, consider investing in one. Having a freezer will help you save money on food and reduce food waste in several ways. You can use it to store ingredients you buy cheaply in bulk or in season, or you can prepare meals and portion them for the freezer to have ready any time you want. Here are three surprising foods you can store in the freezer.

Garlic

It’s pretty easy to store garlic in the freezer and you can do it however it’s the most convenient for you. You can freeze whole bulbs, cloves, or chopped garlic packed in plastic bags.

Apples

Apples freeze well, but we don’t typically think about storing them in the freezer. It’s easy to store them whole or sliced, depending on what you plan to do with them later.

Eggs

You can freeze the leftover egg yolks or whites after baking so you can use them later. A small container such as an ice cube tray is perfect for this.
