If you’re under lockdown like most of the world right now, you probably have to cook more than usual. Staying at home and not going out to eat is important during the outbreak of coronavirus, and here’s how to use the foods you have in your stash in the best way.

What to Eat First?

Have you stocked up on fresh fruits and veggies and other items that can go bad really fast? Make sure to use them first! Freeze what you can’t use or make a big batch of your favorite meal and freeze the individual portions to have on hand when you don’t feel like cooking.

Substitute

Most recipes handle substitutions. If you’re a skilled cook, you can come up with your own ideas, but even if you’re not, it’s pretty easy to google the ingredient replacements when you need them. You don’t need to abandon the whole recipe just because you don’t have an ingredient or two!

Knowing how difficult it can be to get kids to eat their fruits and vegetables, a mom named Sarah Horhung came up with an interesting solution and put it on Facebook. In just over 2 weeks, her post got over 84,000 likes, 32,000 comments, and 115,000 shares, which pretty much shocked her. What’s this amazing hack that Hornung shared?

On September 15th, she posted a photo that shows the inside of her fridge. The photo shows the fridge door that’s not packed with eggs and condiments like many other fridge doors. Instead, we see several plastic containers filled with fresh fruits and veggies and some other healthy snacks. We can already see what this is all about and it’s brilliant.

β€œAfter grocery shopping I always wash and prep all of the food that is considered self-serve in our house,” this clever lady wrote on Facebook. β€œThere’s something about having things truly ready to grab that makes kids eat it. I could leave the baby carrots in a bag or leave the grapes on the stems but they wouldn’t eat it.”

Thousands of people commented on her post agreeing that this is indeed a great way to make kids eat more fresh produce, but that it can also be helpful for adults. After all, don’t we all have the days when we reach for a bag of chips simply because it’s convenient to eat? With just a few extra minutes of preparation, you can have your own pre-made healthy snacks available in your fridge at all times!

WhatsUpMoms, a parenting channel on YouTube that has over 2.5 million subscribers, posted a video showing how to organize the fridge in the best way. Here’s what we learned from it.

Before you even start thinking about how to organize the food in your fridge, you need to clean it out. It’s important to toss out leftovers regularly and watch for the expired food so your fridge doesn’t reek of unpleasant smells.

Speaking of organization in general, the golden rule is to assign a home for every item. The same goes for your fridge – assign a home for your milk, vegetables, leftovers, etc. This way, you’ll always know where to look for something and will have a good idea if you should stock up on a certain category soon.

For big families with huge, full fridges, labeling the categories may be a good idea. This will depend on the type of fridge, and if you have drawers and dividers inside it.

Who decided that we must refrigerate most foods in order to keep it good and fresh? This isn’t the case for all of them. There are some items that you should keep at room temperature. Here is a list of ingredients you should never refrigerate.

  1. Onions
They need air circulation, that cannot be found in the refrigerator.
  2. Potatoes
    Refrigeration affects their flavor.
  3. Tomatoes
Remove them from their plastic bag and leave them at room temperature. Refrigeration can make them mushy and ripe very fast (if that’s what you want, put them in the fridge)
  4. Bread
Refrigeration dries the bread out very fast. Instead, keep a bit at room temperature and freeze the other part.
  5. Winter Squash
Will last for about a month or two outside the fridge, at room temperature.
  6. Garlic
Can stay good up to 2 months with air circulation.
  7. Hot Sauce
Can easily stay in the kitchen cabinet for up to 3 years.
  8. Nail Polish
Keeping it in the fridge can cause it to thicken. Keep it at room temperature, away from sunlight.
  9. Batteries
Should be in a drawer at room temperature. The extreme cold or the heat could ruin them.
  10. Coffee
Will affect the flavor of the coffee beans.
