Gingerbread are a delightful winter treat and they are also pretty simple to make. You can’t get much more Christmassy than the smell of gingerbread baking! Here is a simple recipe for how to make them.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine your sugar with your butter (left at room temperature to soften) until the mixture becomes light and fluffy.
  2. Add your molasses, beating until well-combined. Then add your egg and beat until all mixed in.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk your flour, baking soda, baking powder, ground ginger, ground cinnamon, and salt.
  4. Once they are well mixed and incorporated, add your dry ingredients to your wet mixture. Mix until a soft dough forms without overmixing.
  5. Wrap your dough in clingfilm and leave in the fridge for an hour. Once chilled, roll out onto a floured surface into your desired thickness and cut out shapes. Preheat your oven to a medium heat (around 350°F).
  6. Place your shapes onto a baking tray with baking paper and cook in the oven for about 8 minutes. Once they have cooked, allow them to chill for 10 minutes, before adding your own decorations and icing as you please.

For many families in the United States, the holiday season means one thing when talking about food: cookies! You’ll find all kinds of tasty cookies on tables throughout the country, waiting for guests to arrive and devour them.

Here are the three definitive cookies that make the holiday season the holiday season.

Snickerdoodles

Snickerdoodles are our personal favorite wintertime treat. These cookies are soft and delightful and they are covered with cinnamon sugar that makes them a perfect complement to the cool weather of the holiday season.

Gingerbread

Gingerbread men and gingerbread houses are two of the hallmarks of the holiday season! Made with ginger, cloves, and nutmeg and sweetened with honey or brown sugar, this rich cookie is perfect with a hot cup of coffee.

Pizzelle

The United States has a huge tradition of Italian immigration, so it should be no surprise that this thin, wafer-like cookie with intricate designs is a holiday staple in America. You’ll find it in large concentrations in cities like Chicago and Philadelphia with large Italian populations.
