We’ve all heard the advice from doctors telling us to get our daily serving of fruits and veggies, but when it comes to actually buying produce, we have to admit that we’ve often found ourselves at a loss. If you need help figuring out what’s ripe and what’s not, here’s a short guide for you to follow.

Avocados

You will know when an avocado is ready to be eaten by how firm it is. It should be the perfect balance between soft and firm, and not fully cave when you squeeze it! Another trick is to pull the stem of it off, and if its green its ready! If you are buying multiple avocados, we recommend buying them extra firm and putting a few in a brown bag next to some bananas to ripen. This way they won’t ripen all at once!

Pineapples

You will know when a pineapple is good when the bottom of it smells fragrant and fruity! Another trick is to pull a stem out. If it gives easily, then that pineapple is ready to go. Just don’t let it sit too long after, because they can overripe rather quickly.

Bananas

We recommend purchasing bananas that are yellow and green. They only take a day or two to ripen at that point, and this way they wont be overripe too quickly by the time you are ready to eat them. If this happens though, you can always make a homemade banana bread!

Mangos

Mangos should feel similar in firmness to an avocado! If they are sticky and squirting, they are overripe and will be a little too soft for eating. If they are firm with a slight give, they are ready to be enjoyed in fruit salads or on their own! Of course if you happen upon an ovverripe one, stick it in the freezer and use it in smoothies!

Supermarket sushi has advantages: it can be taken home to eat later or be consumed on the go, and it’s usually more affordable than restaurant sushi. However, you should be careful when choosing which one to buy.

Here are some tips for selecting quality sushi at your local supermarket.

Check the Date It Was Made

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bx0Nd4DiKqy/

One of the most important qualifications when choosing good sushi is that it must be fresh. Check to see if there is a “made on” date on your package of sushi to ensure that it isn’t more than a day old, which could ruin its quality.

Read the Ingredient List Carefully

Supermarket sushi often has quality ingredients, but it can be easy for producers to sneak in low quality products like “imitation crab” too. Read the ingredient list carefully to be sure that the ingredients are what you think they are.

See Where it Comes From

If you live in LA, you probably don’t want to eat sushi that was made in New York. Local production ensures freshness and quality, so try to find sushi that was produced nearby.

Did you know that over a third of food products worldwide aren’t consumed, either because they are thrown away or get spoiled?

Unfortunately, many of us don’t eat all of the food we purchase. This is a waste of money and also contributes to methane gas emissions from landfills.

Here are some easy ways to be cut down on food waste in your kitchen.

Store and Eat Leftovers

If you make too much food, it’s essential to store and eat leftovers to reduce waste. In addition to helping you save money, it also saves you from having to make a meal the next day!

Buy Smaller Amounts of Food at the Store

A lot of food waste can be attributed to spoilage. If you buy too much food, especially fruits and vegetables, it’s likely they’ll go bad before you eat them. Buy less and make more trips to the store.

Use Your Freezer

If you find a package of meat or bread that’s nearing its expiration date, freeze it! Instead of throwing it away, you can preserve the food and eat it at a later date.

Reduce Kitchen Clutter

While it might seem trivial, refrigerator and pantry clutter causes lots of food waste. If you can’t find that ingredient you bought, how can you use it? Keep things organized, and you’ll be more aware of what’s in your kitchen.
