Powered jelly donuts, known as Sufganiyot in Hebrew, are a traditional dessert shared over the Jewish festival of Hanukkah. Fluffy on the outside with a delicious, sweet center, this recipe will teach you how to make these tasty treats in your own kitchen.

Ready The Dough

Stir flour, granulated sugar, yeast, salt, and nutmeg in a bowl, and then add egg yolks, warm water, and butter. Then beat the mixture until the dough is smooth. You’ll then need to place the dough in a large bowl coated in oil.

Make The Donuts

Cover the bowl and let the contents rise for one and a half hours. Cut the dough into eight round pieces and preheat your oven to 350°F. Place four dough rounds in hot oil and cook in the oven until each side is golden brown. Do the same for the remaining donuts.

Finishing Touches

Allow donuts to stand and cool for 10 minutes. Then, get some jam and use a butter knife to place it in the center of each donut. Finally, sprinkle confectioners’ sugar on the outside of each donut before serving.

Don’t get us wrong—we have nothing against cream cheese and salmon. For centuries, the combo has served as the go-to of latke toppings (followed only by the slightly more controversial applesauce…) and it is nothing short of delicious. But who’s to say you can’t get a little creative when it comes to dressing your latkes this Hanukkah?

Fresh and Friendly

If you’re looking to step out the box, but still want to play it fairly safe, this is a good place to start. Shmear on some Greek yogurt, top with sliced cucumber, fresh dill, and salt and pepper.

Pesto Princess

Pesto is another familiar flavor that has tons of range. Mix it up with a little bit of mayo and spread it on the latke before topping with fresh rocket.

Some Like It Hot

Latkes and horseradish are old friends, so up the ante with a bit of wasabi. Begin by spreading some crème fraîche, add sliced radishes, a dollop of wasabi, and some sea salt. Be warned—it’s spicy!

The Apple Update

If applesauce makes you think of baby food, you may like this take a bit better. Top your latke with some Brie cheese, a slice of apple, and a drizzle of honey. We love the combination of textures and salty and sweet flavors.

When we think of Hanukkah food, fried, oily foods come to mind. While they’re not known for being healthy, they are traditional and delicious. But you can still enjoy your favorite foods by making just a few swaps. Here are some ways to make your Hanukkah food healthier.

Baked Donuts

Traditional sufganiyot (jelly donuts) are fried in oil, but you can eat a lighter donut by baking them in the oven for 15 minutes at 350 F for 15 minutes. Pipe them with strawberry jam once they’ve cooled and dust them with powdered sugar.

Cauliflower Latkes

Instead of making potato latkes (potato pancakes), make cauliflower ones. Because cauliflower has more moisture, they will take a little extra effort to dry out to get the crunchy exterior. Another alternative is to make half cauliflower and half potato ones.

Homemade Applesauce

It’s classic to pair latkes with applesauce or sour cream. Instead of using jarred applesauce which has lots of sugar, make your own own. It will taste even better than what you’re used to having.

Festive Salads

While oil gets a bad rap, you can always do it healthier by using it in a salad. Make a salad with root vegetables, grains, something sweet, and an olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette dressing.
