Ingredients:

  • Four cups of flour
  • 4 tablespoons of white sugar
  • One teaspoon of baking soda
  • One tablespoon of baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 cup of softened margarine
  • One cup of buttermilk
  • One egg
  • 1/4 cup of melted butter
  • 1/4 cup of buttermilk

Instructions:

  1. Mix the flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and margarine in a large bowl. Then, add in the buttermilk and egg and mix until just combined.
  2. Lightly flour a surface and turn the dough out, kneading gently and forming it into a ball.
  3. Put the dough onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Combine the melted butter and buttermilk in a small bowl and brush the loaf with it.
  4. Slash the top of the loaf to make an “x” so that steam can be released as it baked.
  5. Bake at 375 F for 45-50 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean, but you might want to start checking around 30 minutes.
  6. Let the bread cool slightly before you cut into it and then enjoy!

Making homemade bread can be the best decision of your life, due to the many healthier options than your regular bakery products. However, a common frustration for cooks of all ages can be the infinite crumbles that are left behind. Why does this happen? Let’s find out.

There isn’t enough gluten

Despite gluten getting a bad rep, it’s still necessary for a good loaf of bread. It makes the structure whole and strong. Try getting a flour with more gluten.

There is too much flour

Many rookie bakers make the mistake of adding too much flour. This results in an overly dry loaf, prone to crumbling. Balancing the fluids and the flour is the key.

Too much yeast

A good amount of yeast means a high rise on your loaf. However, an excessive amount leads to the entire bread having an unstable structure, prone to crumbling.

You’ve been too modest with salt and fat

Salt and oil are actually very important to a loaf of bread. They keep the yeast under control. If yeast is overly abundant, there will be crumbles everywhere.

You didn’t knead the bread enough

Kneading can be tiring, but it is one of the most integral parts of every loaf. If you didn’t work hard enough, there might be a lot of crumbles in your bread loaf.
