You would have to look hard and long for someone who hasn’t tried or at least heard about Nutella. This iconic hazelnut cocoa spread is a perfect companion to waffles, crepes, and doughnuts, while some people simply cut the middle man and eat it with a spoon.

Nutella being so amazingly delicious usually doesn’t last long, especially if you have kids sneaking around your kitchen. So, if you don’t have to go to the grocery store every few days, you might want to try making homemade Nutella. It’s not that hard, and it is definitely at least a bit healthier than the original.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cups hazelnuts
  • 1 cup cocoa butter
  • 6 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup soy milk
  • ½ cup agave nectar

Instructions:

  1. Roast the hazelnuts for 15 minutes in a preheated oven at 375F.
  2. After roasted, let them cool off before rubbing them with a paper towel to get the skin off.
  3. Process the hazelnuts in a blender until they have a butter-like consistency. Add cacao powder, vanilla extract, soy milk, and agave nectar and blend until the ingredients are combined.
  4. Melt the cacao butter in a microwave. You can do this by placing cacao in a microwave-safe container and heating it in 30-second intervals. After each interval, mix the butter and repeat until melted. Let it cool off a bit.
  5. Add the melted cacao butter to the hazelnut mix and mix until you get a spread-like consistency.
  6. Pop it in the fridge and use it anytime you are craving something sweet.

However, the real stuff is definitely not vegan and not anywhere close to being healthy. So this vegan version is just as delicious, and a lot better for you. All you need are a few ingredients and a food processor, and you can make this at home!

Recipe

  1. Start by preheating your oven to 350 F.
  2. Pour 2 cups of raw hazelnuts onto a baking sheet and roast in the oven for about 10 minutes.
  3. Allow the nuts to cool for a couple of minutes, and then rub them in between your hands to get rid of any leftover skins.
  4. Put the nuts into the food processor and run it until it comes to a smooth nut butter.
  5. Then, add in 1 1/2 tablespoons of vanilla extract, 1/4 cup of cocoa powder, 1/4 cup+3 tablespoons of maple syrup or coconut sugar, 3/8 teaspoon of salt, and 1/2 cup of plant-based milk.
  6. Turn on the food processor and blend until everything comes together into a nice creamy paste and then you’re done!
  7. If you want the spread to be a little smoother, you can add 1-2 tablespoons of your choice of oil.
