Snails: you either love them, or you hate them. In many countries around the world, the mere thought of eating these slimy creatures turns the stomach of most diners.

However, in some countries, these gastropods are one of the most popular fine dining options out there. Here are three countries where snails are popular and enjoyed as a delicacy.

France

The French know sails as escargot, and they are a favorite throughout the country. The French are known worldwide for their love of snails. They are often served with a light butter sauce that includes parsley and other herbs.

Indonesia

The Indonesian style of eating snails is one of the most unique that you’ll find anywhere. After being extracted from their shells, snails are placed onto a wooden skewer and cooked over a fire, satay style.

Spain

Spain, France’s southern neighbor, is also pretty big into snails. Here, you’ll find them as a popular tapas bar item in cities such as Sevilla, and also as a hearty main course featuring tomato sauce and chorizo in northern regions such as Navarre.

If your summer vacation takes you to Indonesia this year, you may want to consider bringing your pet with you. Though pet-friendly cafés and restaurants are not a new thing, the owners of Pawvilion Dog Café went a step further and opened a place for dogs that’s human-friendly.

Pawvilion is a sanctuary for dog owners and their beloved pets who come there to hang out and talk about their fur babies. The café offers other services too, such as dog training and helpful advice if you need it. Their menu is divided into sections for people and for dogs, which is rarely the case in pet-friendly establishments.

Enjoy the photos of the interior and all the lovely dogs on the café’s Instagram page and make sure to visit the place if you ever get the chance!

Kopi luwak coffee is a delicacy and one of, if not, the most expensive beans available on the market.

This coffee is only produced in Indonesia, on parts of the islands of Sumatra, Bali, and Sulawesi. While Indonesia has a reputation for producing some of the best coffee in the world, kopi luwak is in a completely different league.

Kopi luwak is produced through an absolutely bizarre process. Coffee cherries, which are the small fruits from which coffee beans are gathered, are eaten in the wild by a small animal called a palm civet.

You can probably guess what happens next.

The animal partially digests the coffee cherries and then, well, defecates them out of its body.

Kopi luwak farmers then rummage through the droppings of the animals, looking for the partially-digested coffee beans that remain.

After being thoroughly washed, roasted, and then bagged, this coffee is then sold for up to $700 per kilogram. That means that just a single cup of coffee made by kopi luwak beans can be as expensive as $50.

There’s a reason why kopi luwak is so expensive and sought-after, though, as the beans produced through this process are said to produce an absolutely delicious coffee. It’s known for being rich, smooth, earthy, and not as bitter as normal coffee.

Would you try this absolutely bizarre and very expensive beverage?
