There are many things that can stop you from getting restful sleep at night, but have you ever thought about how your food might affect your shut eye? Certain dishes and foods can irritate the digestive system, making it harder to get to sleep. Yet other foods have the opposite effect and can be beneficial for both digestion and sleep. Check out these foods that can help you sleep a little better.

Oats

Once soaked in water or milk or cooked, oats are easy to digest. There is also evidence that the fibre can feed your healthy gut bacteria, making digestion easier and less painful. Try a small bowl of porridge before bed, or even an oat version of rice pudding post dinner.

Mint

This green herb calms both stomach and mind and is great for easing any discomfort and pain. Try a few drops of peppermint oil in water, or drink peppermint tea to soothe yourself before bed.

Flax Seeds

There is increasing evidence that flax seeds can help your body process food, due to the healthy fibre contained within the seeds. Try a tablespoon soaked in water, or add them to that porridge.

If you’ve been wondering why everyone’s talking about oat milk lately, there’s a good reason for it. Oat milk is great for you and delicious at the same time – some say it’s most similar to cow milk compared to any other non-dairy option out there. And despite all this, it’s still not easy to buy it wherever you want. The good news is that you don’t have to chase it around the city; you can easily make it at home!

Ingredients

Making your own oat milk is easier than you think. You can easily get the ingredients and the only tools you’ll need are a blender and a draining cloth. You’ll need:

  • 1 cup organic oats
  • 3 cups purified water plus extra water for soaking
  • a pinch of sea salt
  • optionally, add 1-2 dates, a tsp of honey, or a vanilla/cinnamon extract

Instructions

Soak the oats in purified water and leave them for at least 30 minutes, but not longer than 12 hours. This will soften the oats and help remove the phytic acid.

Drain and rinse the oats well and discard the water. Put them into the blender, add purified water (3 cups), salt, and the optional spices. Blend for a minute or two.

Strain in a jar and keep refrigerated for 3-5 days. Shake before each use.

It seems like there are so many different types of oats out there it’s hard to keep track. Here is a short list of the different kinds of oats, how to cook them, and how nutritional they are.

Oat Groats

This type of oat is the least processed because are essentially the entire oat with only the husk removed. That also means that the nutritional value of these oats is the highest. Unfortunately, they do take almost an hour to cook, but it is well worth it for it’s richer flavor and high nutritional value!

Steel-Cut Oats

These oats are actually just oat groats that have been cut into smaller pieces. Since they are smaller, they cook more easily and quicker than oat groats, while still maintaining all the health benefits.

Rolled Oats

Rolled oats are simply oat grats that have been steamed, rolled out, and steamed again. These cook in about 5 minutes on the stove, or 2 minutes in the microwave. They are also ideal for baking!

Quick Oats

Quick oats are rolled oats that have been cooked a little bit already so they only take about 1 minute to cook. Their texture is mushier than oatmeal but they are good for on the go cooking.
