Can you believe that the beginning of the decade of the 2000s was twenty years ago? While it might seem that less time has passed since then, we sure have lived a lot of different trends and events since that decade.

Do you remember which food trends influenced this decade’s culinary landscape? Here are three that you might need to be reminded of.

Sliders

Sliders were once quite possibly the most popular “trending” option on restaurant menus everywhere. These mini sandwiches were often served in groups of 3 or 4, with options from hamburgers to buffalo chicken sandwiches being served up to hungry diners throughout the planet.

Atkins Diet

While the keto diet is now normalizing low-carb, high-protein eating patterns, that distinction once belonged to the popular Atkins Diet. Keto diets don’t let you eat virtually any carbohydrates, but at least you could sneak a little bit in on the now old-fashioned Atkins plan.

Cupcakes

Cupcakes have been popular for a long time, and continue to be popular, but things really took off in the 2000s. Mini cupcakes, gourmet cupcakes, and any type of these sweet, frosting-topped pastries were able to be found anywhere during this decade.

Pork sliders will take a little bit of extra work but are definitely the perfect appetizer for your next party.

Ingredients

  • 3 lb boneless pork shoulder without skin or fat
  • 36 slider buns
  • 1 chopped yellow onion
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon cumin

For the BBQ sauce you need

  • 3/4 cups apple sauce
  • 2 packets sweet honey BBQ sauce mix
  • 4 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 1/2 cup reserved pork liquid

Instructions

Mix the cumin, brown sugar, black pepper, salt, and paprika together. Add the mix to the pork shoulder and leave it on a plate.

Cook the meat together with the onions and chicken broth until it’s done. If you have a slow cooker place the chicken broth and onions on the bottom and the pork on top for 8 hours.

Keep the liquid and separate the meat into small shreds.

For the BBQ sauce, you need to mix the apple juice, sweet honey BBQ mix, balsamic vinegar, and reserved pork liquid.

Get a cup and fill it with the BBQ sauce. Add it to the shredded pork meat and mix it well.

To put together the pork sliders you need to add the meat to the buns, extra BBQ sauce, and cole slaw.

Everything is always more fun when it’s not the right size, and these sliders are no exception! They are perfect if you want to have a fun yet filling appetizer, plus they taste amazing.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds of ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 teaspoons of pepper
  • 2 teaspoons of garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon of chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce
  • Cheddar cheese or whatever type you like
  • Hawaiian rolls or slider buns

Recipe

  1. In a bowl, combine all the seasonings, Worcestershire sauce, and beef in a bowl.
  2. Once everything is mixed up well, use a mini ice cream scoop to make circles out of the beef mixture, and then flatten them into a patty. Make an imprint with your thumb into each patty so they will stay flat when you cook them.
  3. Heat up a large skillet on medium-high and get it nice and hot.
  4. Without overcrowding the pan, cook the sliders on each side for 2-3 minutes until they are nice and browned.
  5. Then, put a little slice of cheese on the top, cover the pan for 30 seconds, and they’ll be perfectly melted.
  6. Put the sliders on the bread of your choice, layout your favorite condiments and toppings, and let the party begin!
