Ingredients:

  • Four cups of flour
  • 4 tablespoons of white sugar
  • One teaspoon of baking soda
  • One tablespoon of baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 cup of softened margarine
  • One cup of buttermilk
  • One egg
  • 1/4 cup of melted butter
  • 1/4 cup of buttermilk

Instructions:

  1. Mix the flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and margarine in a large bowl. Then, add in the buttermilk and egg and mix until just combined.
  2. Lightly flour a surface and turn the dough out, kneading gently and forming it into a ball.
  3. Put the dough onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Combine the melted butter and buttermilk in a small bowl and brush the loaf with it.
  4. Slash the top of the loaf to make an “x” so that steam can be released as it baked.
  5. Bake at 375 F for 45-50 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean, but you might want to start checking around 30 minutes.
  6. Let the bread cool slightly before you cut into it and then enjoy!

One of the most beloved and well-known Irish holidays is St. Patrick’s Day. Millions of people around the world, from Dublin to Tokyo, celebrate this day, which commemorates the national saint of Ireland.

Ireland has a rich culinary tradition, and there are plenty of options in terms of Irish food and drinks that you can consume to celebrate. Here are some of our picks to celebrate St. Paddy’s Day.

Irish Stew

One of the most popular dishes in Ireland, this stew combines mutton (or beef), potatoes, onions, parsley, and carrots. It’s a warm and hearty dish that’s good in Irish winters.

Corned Beef and Cabbage

A favorite of the Irish diaspora, this dish has two principal ingredients: Boiled cabbage provides a lighter complement to the rich corned beef.

Soda Bread

A typical but lesser-known Irish staple is soda bread, which is prepared with sodium bicarbonate instead of yeast. You can even add raisins to make a sweeter, breakfast version.

Guinness

The most famous Irish beverage has to be Guinness, an Irish stout which is brewed in Dublin and served throughout the world. It’s known for its dark color and malty sweetness.
