For chopping, baking, sauteing and more, keeping your kitchen well-stocked with a range of cooking tools is an essential part of being able to prepare a wide variety of dishes. That said, the cost of purchasing an entire kitchen’s worth of supplies can add up quickly, with even relatively basic items often coming with a substantial price tag.

Fortunately, you don’t have to spend big bucks on top-of-the-line versions of everything to create delicious food. Read on to learn more about which kitchen tools are okay to skimp on and which are worth the splurge.

Splurge

Pots & Pans

Pots and pans are essential for the vast majority of kitchen tasks, so if you can only afford to splurge on one thing, we recommend going for a well-made set of cookware. Look for pieces with thick, multi-layered bottoms, as these allow for more even heat distribution. Once you’ve chosen your cookware, research and follow the care instructions to keep it in top working condition for as long as possible.

Knives

Investing in sharp, high-quality blades won’t only make meal prep more enjoyable, it will also help prevent injuries and accidents in the kitchen. Look for knives with forged blades and comfortable, ergonomic handles, as these are designed to allow for more precision and control.

Skimp

Baking Sheets

Baking sheets are necessary for many dishes that involve roasting and baking, but the difference between high-end sheets and more affordable options is actually pretty minimal. Look for baking sheets with a non-stick coating, or use a silicone mat for easy cleanup and to keep your baking sheets looking like new.

Chef’s Knife

A good quality chef’s knife is the backbone of any kitchen. Invest in a sharp, comfortable knife that can handle a variety of tasks, from chopping vegetables to slicing meat.

Cutting Board

Mixing Bowls

Having a set of mixing bowls in different sizes is incredibly handy. They can be used for everything from whisking dressings to marinating meats to mixing batters.

Non-Stick Skillet

A non-stick skillet is perfect for cooking eggs, pancakes, and delicate foods that require minimal sticking. It makes flipping and releasing food a breeze.

Saucepan and Stockpot

These versatile pots are essential for boiling pasta, simmering sauces, and making soups or stocks. Opt for a variety of sizes to accommodate different recipes.

Baking Sheet

Whether you’re baking cookies, roasting vegetables, or toasting nuts, a good quality baking sheet is a must. Look for one with a sturdy construction and a non-stick surface.

Wooden Spoon and Spatula

These simple tools are essential for stirring, flipping, and scraping in the kitchen. Opt for wooden utensils that won’t scratch your cookware.

Measuring Cups and Spoons

Accurate measurements are crucial in cooking and baking. Invest in a set of measuring cups and spoons to ensure your recipes turn out just right.

Immersion Blender

An immersion blender is a handy tool for pureeing soups, making sauces, and blending smoothies. It’s compact, easy to use, and saves you from transferring hot liquids to a traditional blender.

Kitchen Scale

For precise measurements and consistent results, a kitchen scale is invaluable. It’s particularly helpful when baking, as ingredients like flour and sugar can vary greatly in weight.

Just like most kitchen tools, the potato masher is more versatile than most people think and you can use it in more ways than one. After using it to make the most mouth-watering mashed potatoes, here are five alternative ways to put this kitchen tool to some good use.

Mashing Eggs

A potato masher can come in handy when you’re making egg salads and sandwiches because you can use it to mash your eggs with ease.

Making Guacamole

Avocados can be eaten in many different ways, but guacamole happens to be one of the most popular dishes it’s used in. Its creamy texture isn’t always easy to achieve, but the potato masher will get you there in no time.

Chopping Walnuts

Chopping walnuts doesn’t require a knife or any elaborate kitchen tools because they’re incredibly soft, and you can use a potato masher to break them instead.

Apple Sauce

The first step of making apple sauce is boiling your apples, and you can easily transform them into apple sauce with your potato masher because they’ll be soft and tender enough.

Stewed Tomatoes

A potato masher can also help you make the most delicious stewed tomatoes. Mashing fresh or canned tomatoes as they cook and get more tender is also an option.

Any chef can get tempted by shiny, new kitchen tools, especially when they’re trendy. But the problem with kitchen tools is many of them are only designed to do one thing and they can take up tons of room in your drawers. These three kitchen tools do the trick, but they’re really unnecessary.

Cherry Pitter

Pitting cherries is a real pain and cherry pitters make it easier, but if you own a metal pastry tip, metal straws, or chopsticks, you can use them to pit cherries. Just push them through the center of the fruit to poke the pit out.

Strawberry Huller

Instead of a strawberry huller, use a sharp paring knife to remove the green stems. Make sure to angle your knife at 45 degrees into the fruit and rotate in a circular fashion around the stem until the core is removed.

Egg Separator

Your hands will do the trick to separate the egg yolk from the whites. Crack the egg on the counter and empty it into your hand so the yolk is cradles in your palm and the whites steam through your fingers. There also won’t be jagged edges which pose the chance of the yolk getting broken and messing up your recipe.
