There’s nothing like cornbread over the holiday season, whether you’re serving it at Thanksgiving or just make a big pot of chili with some on the side.

But, there’s nothing worse than pulling it out of the oven and finding it to be dry as a bone. To avoid that, follow these three recipe tips and you’ll never have to worry about dry cornbread this holiday season.

Buttermilk

Whether your recipe calls for milk or water, ditch them both and only go for buttermilk. This will give you the moisture you’re looking for as well as a higher fat content to keep your cornbread tasting delicious.

Sour Cream

Even just half a cup of sour cream added to your wet ingredients can totally combat dryness in your cornbread. Though your recipe might not say to add it, you don’t need to worry about substituting anything with it, just go ahead and add it in!

Corn

If you really want to guarantee moistness, trade in some or all of the corn in your recipe from creamed corn. The creaminess from the corn will build on the moisture in the cornbread, so you will come out with a super lovely a moist end product.

A lot of people rave about cast iron skillets, because they aren’t just normal pans. Cast iron is a special material that actually gives off a bit of iron in your food as you can cook in them, which is great for vegetarians and vegans. They also require a lot of care since they are completely made out of cast iron. However, they are really worthwhile because of all the amazing things you can make in them!

Cornbread

There is nothing like pulling a skillet of cornbread out of the oven and right onto the dining room table. Cornbread is perfect for chili night, makes for a wonderful appetizer, or game day food covered in your favorite toppings. The cast iron skillet will make sure you get a crispy exterior but keep the inside super soft and moist.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup butter
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 ¼ cups blue, yellow, or white cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Method

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F. Spray an 8-inch square pan or a 9-inch round pan with cooking spray.
  • In a saucepan, heat the butter over a low heat until melted. You could melt the butter in the microwave, but cover the bowl and heat for the minimum time.
  • In a large bowl, beat together melted butter, milk, and egg with a wire whisk or a fork. When well-mixed, add the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Stir until the flour is just moistened, and the batter is still lumpy. Pour batter in the pan. Spread evenly and smooth the top.
  • Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until golden brown. To check if ready, insert a toothpick into the center. If it comes out clean, it’s done. Serve warm.
