Juice cleanses have gained popularity as a quick fix for weight loss and detoxifying the body. However, amidst the buzz, there are also concerns raised by experts regarding their safety and effectiveness. So, what are the potential benefits, and what risks are involved? Let’s get juicy.

Potential Benefits

Fruit and vegetable juices are packed with essential nutrients, making them a valuable addition to a balanced diet. Juice cleanse advocates argue that consuming only juices for a set period can help cleanse the body and yield various health benefits such as improved digestion, increased energy levels, and weight loss. However, while anecdotal evidence points to desired outcomes for some, research on the positive impact of juice cleanses remains limited.

Health Risks

Despite the perceived benefits, juice cleanses come with inherent risks. Consuming only liquid for an extended period can lead to nutritional deficiencies, particularly in essential nutrients like protein and fiber. Long-term juice cleanses have also been linked to serious health complications and eating disorders. Additionally, there is concern among experts regarding the impact of juice cleanses on kidney function.

The Bottom Line

While juice cleanses may offer short-term benefits, they are not without risks. The lack of scientific evidence supporting their effectiveness, coupled with potential health hazards, raises questions about their overall safety. Before embarking on a juice cleanse, it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional. One thing’s for sure: A balanced diet, rich in whole foods, remains the preferred recommendation for optimal wellness and long-term weight loss.

Fruit juices are always a better pick than soda drinks; there is no doubt about that. However, not all fruit juices are actually good for you. Some of them can even be bad.

She Finds magazine recently had a chat with personal trainer & registered dietitian Jesse Feder, who revealed one type of fruit juices you should stay away at all costs. According to Feder, artificially flavored fruit juices should be avoided at all costs due to all the sugar they contain.

“Artificially flavored fruit juices with high amounts of added sugars are the worst for weight gain and blood sugar, “he explains. “These typically include things like fruit punch, lemonade, Hawaiian punch, high-c, and fruit cocktail juices. These fruit juices contain very little fruit, if any at all. “

Feder adds that these types of fruit juices can “spike up” your blood sugar and also cause you to gain weight if you consume them on a frequent basis.

So what should you do instead? Well, Feder says that the juices from freshly squeezed fruits are your best choice if you want refreshment without the downsides. He also recommends keeping the pulp of the fruit inside of the drink, as you’ll get the added benefit of fibers.

So, there you have it. Next time you are in a grocery store, don’t go for that pack of fruit juice. Instead, pick up some oranges, cut them in half, and squeeze them in a glass. Your body will thank you for it.

It’s especially important to keep Vitamin C in your diet at this time of the year. While our bodies naturally get a strong dose of this vitamin during the months of the summer sun, it can be more difficult to ensure that this crucial vitamin stays in your body in strong doses during the winter.

If you are looking to ensure that you keep plenty of Vitamin C in your body, give these fruit juices a try.

Orange Juice

Citrus juices are a great source of Vitamin C, and orange juice is no exception. Try adding a glass to your morning routine, especially if it’s fresh-squeezed, which can give you more than the daily recommended dose of this vitamin.

Grapefruit Juice

Grapefruit juice is another fantastic option here. While it might be more acidic and sour than orange juice, grapefruit juice contains roughly the same amount of Vitamin C and is lower in sugar, especially if you find a non-sweetened version.

Cranberry Juice

Want to get plenty of C in your diet but aren’t a fan of citrus juices? Cranberry juice, then, is a great option. Containing a healthy dose of 20% of the recommended daily value of this mineral in a glass, you can give your immune system a boost with this red juice.

When it comes to baking, it can be difficult to decide whether to use juice from fresh fruit or the extract from it. There are pros and cons to each; fresh fruit is obviously more natural, which comes out in the flavor. But, by using extract, you don’t compromise the consistency of the bake, which can be altered by the addition of liquids. So, if you’ve been wondering what to do, here are good examples to guide you!

Lemon

When it comes to lemon extract, things can get tricky. While the extract will give you the flavor of the lemon, it lacks the acidity that really punches up any baked good, and that is a crucial part of using lemon. Unless you really need a massive lemon flavor, stick with the zest and juice for your cakes and bakes.

Orange

Using orange extract can be helpful when it comes to orange-flavored bakes for a few reasons. Orange is a flavor that can sometimes have trouble coming through on it’s own just by using juice, and even if you opt to use the zest, the fact is that too much zest will make your bake potentially bitter. So, while you should add a little of the fresh juice and zest, there’s no shame in adding a bit of extract as well!
