At their best, hash browns are a crispy, golden brown deliciousness that can turn your breakfast into a feast. At their worst, they are a soggy mess that will make you never think about having hash browns again. To ensure you always end up with the first version, follow these simple tips.

Pick The Best Potatoes

Your hash browns will only be as good as the potatoes you are using to make them. For hash browns, the best pick is a starchy potato variety like Russet or Yukon Gold. Make sure to avoid waxy varieties like Red Bliss because the hash browns made with them will turn out all mushy.

Shred and Rinse the Potatoes

After peeling the potatoes, you should shred them and rinse them under running cold water for a minute. This will help them release excess starch and ensure the hash browns are perfectly crispy.

Don’t Forget to Drain

After the potatoes have been rinsed, drain them properly and then squeeze by hand or wrap them in a clean piece of cloth to make sure all the excess moisture has been removed. Doing this will prevent sogginess.

Use Neutral Oil for Frying

Forget about butter or olive oil when frying hash browns, neutral oil like vegetable or canola is your friend. Neutral oils have a high smoking temperature, so they won’t affect the taste of the hash browns.

Leave Them Be

Once the hash browns hit the pan, leave them be. Wait until they are golden brown at the bottom, and then flip them. After you get the same result on the other side, that is it.

Hash browns are one of the staples of American cuisine, but their crispy and delicious texture isn’t easy to achieve on the first try. If you feel like your hash browns are missing something to be perfect, avoiding these common mistakes could help you perfect your recipe.

Wrong Pan

The pan you’re using can make or break your hash browns because they’re known for being pretty sticky. That’s why you should go with a non-stick pan whenever possible, or consider using a cast iron skillet because it could help you achieve perfect crispiness and color.

Too Much Water

One of the most important steps of making hash browns is getting rid of excess water before baking them. You should always make sure to squeeze your potato shreds to get rid of liquids, and you’ll be left dealing with soggy and bland has browns if you skip this step.

Salting Process

Timing is everything when it comes to salting the potatoes that you’re using in your hash browns. Doing it too early is a huge no-no, because the potato shreds will start releasing water, but you shouldn’t do it too late, either. Salting hash browns before you flip them is usually the best choice.

Hash browns are the ultimate comfort food, but it sometimes takes time to master them on your own. If you’re struggling with finding the perfect balance between ingredients in this beloved breakfast dish, we’re here to help you out.

The delicious recipe for crispy vegan hash browns, shared by Ania of Lazy Cat Kitchen, is incredibly easy to pull off, and you’ll only need three ingredients and seasoning to do it on your own.

If you’re always searching for new ways to eat your potatoes, this idea is definitely worthy of your time, especially since it takes a little bit more than 30 minutes to prepare it.

Ingredients:

  • 450 g / 1 lb starchy variety potatoes, peeled
  • heaped ½ tsp salt
  • 1 large shallot or ½ large onion, finely grated or chopped
  • a good grind of black pepper, adjust to taste
  • oil or oil spray

Instructions:

  1. If you want crispy hash browns with a softer interior, parboil medium potatoes for 5 minutes, drain, and allow them to cool completely.
  2. Grate raw or cooled parboiled potatoes coarsely in a food processor or using a manual grater.
  3. Preheat the oven to 180° C / 355° F (no fan) for raw potato hash browns and 200° C / 390° F for par-boiled potato ones. Get a non-stick baking sheet and a round cookie cutter or an egg ring ready.
  4. Place grated potatoes and remaining ingredients in a bowl. If using raw potatoes, set the mixture aside for 10 minutes. If using parboiled potatoes, there is no need to do that and skip the next step too.
  5. After 10 minutes, place the raw potato mixture in the middle of a clean muslin cloth or kitchen towel and squeeze all the excess moisture out. Drain the water away and you will end up with potato starch stuck to the bottom of the bowl. Break compacted mixture up with a fork or your hands after squeezing the liquid out.
  6. Using a brush or an oil spray, spread a bit of oil underneath each hash brown, place a cookie cutter on the oiled area and loosely pile the mixture inside the cookie cutter (to just under 1 cm / 0.35 ” height), but DON’T COMPACT the mixture. Use a fork to ensure the mixture is spread fairly evenly and it goes all the way to the edges – make sure the mixture is piled up loosely – this way it will cook all the way through and the hash browns won’t be tough.
  7. Bake the raw potato hash browns for 20 minutes and parboil ones for about 10 then carefully detach from the tray using a flat spatula. Brush the surface of the baking tray with oil again and flip each hash brown making sure that it sits directly on the oiled patch. Bake for a further 15-20 minutes (raw potato hash browns) and 10-15 minutes (parboiled potato hash browns).
  8. Serve straight away with vegan sour cream/creme fraiche or ketchup, whichever takes your fancy.
