Middle Eastern food has captivated food lovers around the world for centuries through its use of rich spices, aromatic herbs, and fresh ingredients. The cuisine’s origins are rooted in a diverse region that spans from the Mediterranean to the Persian Gulf, and each country has its own unique take on classic dishes. Today, some innovative food bloggers are putting their own twists on traditional recipes, creating exciting new flavor combinations and using modern techniques. If you’re a fan of bold and flavorful cuisine, here are a few you’re sure to enjoy.

Baked Quinoa Black Bean Falafel

Falafel is a kind of fritter enjoyed in countries all over the Middle East. Traditionally, it’s made with a mixture of ground chickpeas and herbs and served inside pita bread with hummus and vegetables. This recipe puts a Latin American-inspired spin on things by replacing chickpeas with black beans and quinoa. Add a chipotle pepper in adobo sauce for a smoky, spicy kick.

Roasted Sweet Potato Hummus

Chickpeas, tahini, and olive oil are considered to be quintessential components of quality hummus, but sweet potato and cinnamon? Not so much. While there are many unusual varieties of store-bought hummus available today, this recipe keeps things simple with the addition of a few basic ingredients that work surprisingly well with their traditional counterparts.

Green Shakshuka

Shakshuka is a stew served all over North Africa and the Middle East. It’s traditionally prepared by poaching eggs inside a spicy sauce of peppers and tomatoes, which give it a rich, red color. This version replaces all of the red ingredients with bright green Brussels sprouts, zucchini, and baby spinach. The result is a hearty dish that’s sure to satisfy at breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

There is nothing wrong with store-bought hummus, but it rarely compares with the homemade version of this Middle Eastern spread. The latter is simple and quick to make while allowing you to customize it to your preferences.

However, in order to have the best homemade hummus, there are certain mistakes you have to avoid during the cooking process. Check them out below.

Trying to Go Over-the-Top

It can be tempting to put as many different ingredients in your hummus as possible. However, this way, you will be one step closer to ruining the entire batch. Keep it simple and use just the basic ingredients and a few additions to get the taste right.

Opting for Canned Chickpeas

Canned chickpeas are a convenient option, but they won’t get your hummus where you want it to be. Instead of a canned version, go for fresh chickpeas that you can cook yourself. This will make all the difference in the taste.

Not Using Good Quality Tahini

Tahini also plays an important role in the taste of hummus. Don’t opt for the cheap and low-quality variety and instead go for the good stuff.

Skipping the Baking Soda

If you don’t want grainy-looking hummus, add a teaspoon of baking soda when cooking the chickpeas. This will soften their usually thick skin and will allow you to get an even puree.

Letting the Chickpeas go Cold

Pureeing cold chickpeas will frequently result in an uneven consistency. To achieve a smooth texture all the way through, always puree chickpeas while they are warm.

Although it originated in the Middle East, the rest of the world has long known the joys of hummus, a delicious savory dish made of chickpeas often used as a dip or spread. It’s easy to find in a store, but there’s a special pleasure in making your own, offering both satisfaction and the ability to customize your hummus to your liking. If you want to make hummus at home, here are some tips you can follow that will ensure your results turn out great.

Overcook Your Chickpeas

Most of the time, when you cook beans, you want to avoid cooking them too long in order to preserve their structure. But with hummus, you want to cook your chickpeas until they’re super tender, soft, and creamy. This will help you get the best consistency.

Use (Good) Tahini

A lot of (Western) hummus recipes call blending the chickpeas with olive oil, but the traditional way is to blend with tahini, a toasted sesame seed paste, which has just as much fat and flavor as olive oil, if not more. So go ahead and go the tahini route, making sure to get pure, authentic sesame seed tahini.

Store-bought hummus is often described as being boring, industrial, and flavorless. It’s easy to see why. Sometimes, companies only add chickpeas, a little bit of tahini, and almost nothing else to spice up the flavor of their hummus.

However, if you don’t have time to make your own hummus and want to use a store-bought variety, that doesn’t mean that you have to suffer through terrible hummus. Here are three things to add to make it taste delicious.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is a key component of any delicious hummus creation, and you should definitely add a little bit to the store-bought variety to add tanginess. If not, the hummus ends up being bland.

Olive Oil

While most store-bought varieties of hummus contain some olive oil, they usually do not contain enough to give it the consistency that it should have. Add a tablespoon or so more to each batch, and your hummus will be much smoother.

Paprika

Any respectable hummus will be served with paprika, and this is an ingredient that store-bought hummus doesn’t usually contain. Just a few sprinkles of sweet paprika on top of your hummus can make all the difference in terms of its flavor.

What is your favorite snack food? For those who are looking to add a protein boost to their diet, there are tons of options when looking for a new preferred snack option. You just have to know what to look for!

Check out these three snack foods that provide a strong protein boost, and can be enjoyed at any point in the day.

Peanuts

Salty and rich roasted peanuts are one of our favorite snack foods. The great news for protein lovers is that they also give a boost of this important nutrient, containing tons of the substance by weight. You can consume these nuts in the traditional way, or as peanut butter.

Beef Jerky

Beef jerky is a form of the classic cow meat that has been dried and treated to make it a portable, long-lasting snack option. While it might not look or taste exactly like a steak, you’ll get the same high protein content by munching on jerky during your workday.

Hummus

Looking to snack on something a little bit lighter? Why not try hummus along with a side such as sliced vegetables? Hummus contains a surprisingly high proportion of protein, which makes it a great choice.

At this point, hummus is one of the most well-known dips around the globe. Originally its roots come from the Middle East, and is now a staple in most kitchens. Hummus is a great snack to have around the house or to put out for a party. But whether you’re making it at home and buying it from the store, serve it with a bit of pizazz with these easy tips and tricks.

Add Spices

If you work a lot or simply don’t have the patience to make hummus from scratch, there are still ways you can jazz up store-bought hummus. Instead of leaving it as is, simply drizzle the hummus with some olive oil and add some spices on top. This not only makes it more flavorful but adds a pop of color to the plate. A few options are paprika, za’atar, or even sesame seeds.

Roasted Chickpeas

Roasted chickpeas are a great centerpiece to any hummus plate for many reasons. One, it reinforces the chickpea flavor from the hummus itself, it adds a textural element with the crunch, and it is also aesthetically beautiful. You can also play around with the spices you use for the chickpeas depending on your flavor profile.
