Salt is a vital ingredient in cooking, but getting the right amount can be tricky. Too little, and your dish will lack flavor. Too much, and it can be overpowering. However, adding the right amount of salt can elevate your cooking and impress your guests with perfectly seasoned dishes. Here are some tips to ensure that you add the right amount of salt every time.

Taste Tests

Firstly, taste your food regularly as you cook. This allows you to adjust the seasoning gradually, rather than adding too much at once. Remember, it is easier to add more salt than to remove it!

At a Height

Another trick is to sprinkle the salt from a height, rather than directly over the food. This disperses the salt more evenly and ensures that it lands on every part of the dish. Additionally, seasoning different components of the dish separately can help you achieve the perfect balance. For example, season the vegetables and the protein separately before combining them.

Varieties

Lastly, don’t be afraid to experiment with different types of salt. Kosher salt, sea salt, and Himalayan salt all have different flavor profiles and textures, so try them out and see which works best for your dish.

Salt is the most common food seasoning and it’s been around forever. Lately, we started wondering if there’s more to salt than that what’s in our common salt shakers, so here are the most common types of salt you should know about.

Table Salt

If you’ve never given salt a second guess, you’re probably using common table salt in your dishes. You can find it for cheap at any supermarket and you can find the iodized version of it just as easily.

Kosher Salt

Kosher salt has a lighter taste than table salt. It’s coarse-grained and perfect for making seasoning blends and spice rubs. If you’re replacing table salt with Kosher salt in the recipe, know that it’s half as salty for the same volume compared to table salt.

Sea Salt

Sea salt is basically made by evaporating seawater. There are many different varieties, depending on where it comes from. Sea salt comes in different forms and colors and can be enriched with minerals and algae.

You’ve noticed that salty foods make you thirsty, but have you ever wondered why that happens? Salt is one of the most common and the oldest seasonings and saltiness is one of the basic tastes we have as humans. And while salt is essential for life, too much of it can be bad for your health and wellbeing.

When you intake salt, it becomes absorbed into your bloodstream and your blood becomes saltier, making the fluids outside of your cells saltiers than those inside the cells. As you’ve probably heard somewhere before, “salt attracts water,” and this is literally what happens – it pulls water out of your cells like a magnet. The cells work hard to hold in the water and they send a message to your brain, letting it know what’s happening.

Your brain understands that your blood saltiness levels are off and it triggers the alarm that tells you you need to drink water in order to dilute the salt. This is thirst.

Your kidneys are another important factor in regulating blood saltines levels. They help dilute the salt by not letting you lose any more water than necessary, meaning they slow down urine production. The balancing of salt and water is, therefore, directly related to the amount of water you have in your blood and cells, which controls your blood pressure.

Salt is one of the most essential ingredients in any dish for many reasons. When it goes on meat, it tenderizes it and makes it softer. When it goes into a dessert, it actually makes it taste sweeter. Salt is something that really brings out the flavors out of ingredients, making it taste even better and more like itself. But, if you want to go beyond just the different kinds of crystallized salt, try some of these salty ingredients.

Pickles

Pickles are a great ingredient to use because it brings acidity and saltiness to a meal. Although they are usually eaten on their own, you can add them to many dishes like potato salad, deviled eggs, or even add the brine to different sauces.

Miso

Miso paste is a fermented soybean product from Japan, most often associated with the soup that it is made with it. However, miso is a salty and umami bomb and can be used in many dishes like ragu, tomato sauces, even non-Japenese soups.

Anchovies

Anchovies are a great source of salt, protein, and other important vitamins. You can make them into many salad dressings, use it in pasta sauces, or chopped into small bits and used in pretty much anything.
