Japan is a country with a rich tradition that includes religion, but it’s mostly secular these days. According to the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs, there were 1.9 million Christians living in Japan in 2017, which is nothing compared to the total population of 126.8 million people. But the Japanese have their own way of celebrating Christmas, even though it’s not a religious or national holiday for them.

In Japan, Christmas has been marketed as a romantic and elegant holiday for many years, and most people see it that way. That’s why they celebrate it with simple cakes like strawberry shortcakes. Most hotels, restaurants, bakeries, supermarkets, and other businesses start promoting their Christmas cakes in November and they are usually sold out far before the holidays.

Even though Christmas is not as big in Japan as in some Western countries, it’s still a pretty festive time of the year. It’s only days before the New Year so it’s a chance for many people to spend time with families in a way similar to other countries that celebrate Christmas.

Have you ever thought of summer as being the perfect time for a pastry? You might not have, considering that pastries are often thought to be a compliment to a hot coffee on a cold summer morning.

That doesn’t mean that there aren’t great pastries for the hottest months of the year, however! Here are some pastries that are perfect to munch on even when the temperatures are up!

Strawberry Shortcake

Strawberry shortcake is a summer favorite that combines seasonal fruit with a light and airy cake. Topped with rich, sugary, and fresh strawberries, it’s such a refreshing pastry that you’ll forget that you’re filling your stomach!

Lemon-Berry Doughnuts

Doughnuts come in all shapes, sizes, and flavors. While winter might be the perfect time to enjoy a maple bacon doughnut, the great thing about this pastry is that there are options like lemon-berry doughnuts that are perfect for the warmer months. The light citrus taste of these doughnuts is ideal on a hot day.

Pineapple Cake

Pineapple cake is a dessert that has its origins in the southeast Asian island of Taiwan. Combining the juicy, sweet, and tropical flavor of pineapple with a light cake is a perfect idea to enjoy a sweet treat during summer.

After an amazing dinner, you’re probably looking to end things with a sweet snack. Look no further than strawberry shortcake. This delicious dessert is the most popular form of shortcake in the world. It was originally founded in 1588, and centuries later, it’s enjoying its time as one of few pastries to have their own holiday and cartoon character. It’s so popular that the Philippines baked the largest one known to man at 21,213 pounds. If you’re in the mood for this sweet treat, it’s not that hard to put it together.

It was first crafted in 1588, and centuries later, it’s enjoying its time as one of few pastries to have their own holiday and cartoon character. It’s so popular that the Philippines baked the largest one known to man, too, weighing in at 21,213 pounds. If you’re in the mood for this sweet treat, it’s not that hard to put it together.

Gather two cups of strawberries. You can either go old fashioned and pick your own strawberries at the local farm or you can just simply buy them at a supermarket near you. Make sure these are thinly sliced before using them. Aside from the fruit, you’re going to need the basics to make a shortcake: One tablespoon of baking powder, one cup of buttermilk, one cup of heavy cream, and two teaspoons of vanilla extract.

When it comes to salt, don’t stick with whatever table salt you may own—use one and a half teaspoons of kosher salt. You’ll also need two tablespoons of granulated sugar and one stick of cold unsalted butter. This form of butter is more effective in this recipe than regular salted butter.

Before getting the strawberries in the mix, you must first create the shortcakes!

Mix the flour, kosher salt, baking powder, and butter together in a bowl until the dough becomes thick. Take the dough out of the bowl, and place it on a surface that has been lightly floured. Fold the dough several times with your hands.

It’s recommended that you lightly cover your hands with flour before doing this. Cut the dough into six squares, and place them on a baking sheet. Put them in a 400 degrees oven, and let them sit for around 22 to 25 minutes.

Strawberry Swing

While the shortcakes are busy cooking, start working on the strawberries. Combine them and the sugar in a medium bowl, and let them sit for 20 minutes. In another bowl, whip the vanilla extract and heavy cream until it gets stiff.

When that’s all done, it’s time to finish things up. Split the biscuits horizontally, and throw in the soaked strawberries and whipping cream. If you want to throw in some more strawberries, go for it. This entire cooking process is expected to take around one hour. This recipe is great if you’re serving six people, so don’t be afraid to invite people over to share the wealth.

If your sweet tooth is that massive, though, you could just eat the whole thing yourself!
