One thing that you absolutely must get right if you want to successfully master Indian cooking are the spices used in this incredibly rich cuisine’s flavor repertoire.

Here are four spices that you absolutely must have in your spice rack if you want to add flavor to your cooking and master Indian flavoring techniques.

Cumin

Found in cooking throughout the world, from the Middle East to Mexico, this warm spice is also commonly employed in Indian dishes. A common addition to curry dishes, Indian chefs love it due to its aromatic nature and ability to combine with other flavors.

Coriander

This herb’s seeds provide another classic taste when making Indian food. In fact, it often pairs with cumin! Its taste is described as lemony and citrusy and is often used in conjunction with hotter and more intense flavors.

Turmeric

Have you ever seen an Indian dish with a bright yellowish-orange color? It probably owed its striking appearance to this spice, which has a flavor that many compare to ginger. It’s a must-have for Indian cooking.

Cardamom

This intense spice must be used with caution due to its ability to overwhelm other spices, but it’s a great addition to many dishes such as curries and rice dishes. It adds complexity due to its spicy, citrusy, and herbal nature and is simply unmistakable.

The many medical benefits of turmeric are becoming better-known in the western world after enjoying popularity in the East for centuries.

The main compound in turmeric is curcumin, and it is this that is known for its pain-relieving, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties.

There is increasing evidence that turmeric has other benefits such as improving digestion and brain health, purifying the blood, and acting as an anti-aging substance. But there might also be some negative side effects of consuming turmeric.

These negative side effects are rare but possible. One potential problem arises if you are taking analgesics such as aspirin or blood thinning medication.

Taking a concentrated form of turmeric such as capsules at the same time might exacerbate the blood thinning capacities of your other medications.

As a result, you might suffer from increased bleeding when cut, or during menstruation, or if you tend to get a bloody nose. High doses of turmeric may also cause slow blood clotting, anemia, nausea, stomach aches, diarrhea, vomiting, and exacerbated GERD symptoms.

If you are on medication, are pregnant, or tend towards a bloody nose, consult your doctor as to how much turmeric is safe for you to take. As a rule of thumb, less than 1,000 mg of turmeric per day seems to be safest.
