Odds are that you’ve probably encountered chia seeds on social media mostly in their trendy pudding form (and we’re going to get to that in a bit). But chia seeds have more in them than just being a great healthy pudding basis, and it’s about time you get to know them a bit better!

Where Do Chia Seeds Come From, Anyway?

Chia seeds actually come from a Mexican plant in the mint family called Salvia Hispanica.

Nutritional Value

Chia seeds became a popular ingredient in different foods largely thanks to the great amount and diversity of nutrients they contain. They’re high in fiber and protein, and they’re also an amazing source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are good for the heart. Other than that, they’re rich in calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and zinc.

Btw, chia seeds provide you with all these great nutrients while still being very low-calorie, which is an added bonus.

So, What About That Pudding Thing?

The tiny, round chia seeds are surprisingly great at absorbing crazy amounts of liquid! That’s what makes them such amazing pudding candidates. Thanks to being hygroscopic, chia seeds can actually absorb up to 12 times their weight in liquid. Other than absorbing liquid, they also form a special coating. This is what gives chia-based foods and drinks, just like those trending social media puddings with blueberries on top, their special gel texture.

Ingredients

For this berry jam you will need frozen blueberries and frozen raspberries, but you can use whatever frozen berries you have at home. You can also use fresh berries if you have a lot or it’s berry season. You will also need a splash of apple juice and, of course, chia seeds! Chia seeds are incredible seeds that are packed full of protein, but also become gel-like when they come into contact with water which is how the jam becomes a jam.

Recipe

  1. Pour the berries into a bowl and microwave them to defrost, or defrost as you usually do. If you’re using fresh berries, omit this step and add a little bit more water to your recipe.
  2. Pour in the apple juice along with the chia seeds and mix everything together with a fork.
  3. While you’re mixing, smash the berries with the fork so you release the juices and get a smoother consistency.
  4. Leave for 30 minutes, and then store or use right away!

Fatigue is a common everyday symptom many people of all ages face. If you don’t want to turn to medicine, you can try making small changes to your diet. These 5 foods will help you beat fatigue. They’re all delicious, so you won’t have to make any sacrifices.

Nuts

Nuts are amazing if you’re struggling to beat fatigue. They are a factory for energy, will really get your levels up and make you feel better. The best option is to get them unsalted.

Bananas

Bananas are among the most versatile foods ever. Thanks to the potassium in them, your energy levels will be back up.

Chia Seeds

🌰Why chia seeds? – 🌰I had no idea what chia seeds were when I first started my weight loss journey. I mean I've heard of it, but I had this mini grudge against anything that was labeled as a "premium superfood". I mean there are plenty of superfoods around us that don't need to cost a premium. Berries, fish, leafy greens, nuts, whole grains are all superfoods too. – 🌰1 tablespoon of chia seeds is roughly: – 🌰60kcal 🌰2g fiber 🌰2g protein 🌰2.5g omega 3s – 🌰You also get a bunch of other nutrients like calcium, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus but that's all just a bonus to me. I simply love how flexible chia seeds are. I've put them in soup, overnight oats, yogurt, water, protein shakes, cookies, cake, it's like nutrients at my fingertips. – 🌰My favorite ways to use them are: – 🌰1) Baking. In pancakes, cakes, cookies. It's less about me but more about kiddos in this case. Everyday it's a struggle to get them to finish their fruits & veggies but chia seeds, ohhhh chia seeds they have no idea what hit them. That's also the reason why I add a little bit of koko krunch or M&Ms it's basically to mask the texture of chia seeds. – 🌰I've never lost that battle with the kiddos… yet. – 🌰Another thing about chia seeds and baking is that it acts as a binding agent. Chia seeds become gooey and sticky once it's soaked in liquid for a little bit. It makes my "healthy" baked goods firmer, a more 'normal' texture. The alternative would be flour. Cheaper yes, but I'd rather spend on health now than for medical bills. – 🌰2) Protein shakes. I make my protein shakes with water to minimize the calories. I remember once I added a tbsp of chia to the shake, I forgot why, but it tasted sooooo magnificent. It become kinda like bubble tea. It’s my standard mix nowadays. – 🌰3) Overnight oats. During my vegan days I use to make overnight oats for breakfast. The mix was soymilk, oats, chia seeds, flaxseeds and fruits. It was my first step into meal prepping as I’d prep 5-6 jars for the next few days. Chia seeds helped thicken the oats into this.. I don’t know what to call it. It was pretty good though. – 🌰What are your thoughts on Chia seeds? Like em? Hate em?

Water

Fatigue often happens as a result of low blood pressure. You can easily fight it by drinking a glass or two of water. Stay away from bubbly drinks. Being properly hydrated at all times is very important for a healthy body.

Lemon

Not everyone can stand to eat a whole lemon just like that. Luckily, there are so many options to include it in your daily routine. Adding a few pieces of lemon in your glass of water should do the job.
