Banana Day, celebrated around the world on April 17th, is a great opportunity to get educated about this fabulous fruit, ideal for anything from fruit salad to smoothies to banana bread. So, grab a banana, and let’s begin.

Banana-Latex Connection

Watch out if you’re allergic to bananas, since you might be sensitive to latex, too. It turns out that about half of latex-sensitive folks share a banana allergy, all thanks to tricky proteins hiding inside.

Banana Varieties

There’s a lot more than one kind of banana! With over 1000 types divided into 50 groups, there’s a unique banana for every palate—from the Cavendish to the Gros Michel.

Heart-Healthy

They’re not just tasty: Research reveals that regularly eating potassium-rich bananas can help against stroke and heart attack risks. They keep your arteries in top shape by fighting stiffness.

Slippery Science

Ever wondered why bananas are so slippery? In 2014, a physics team won an Ig Nobel Prize for finding the answer to this question. Apparently, the slipperiness comes from the polysaccharide molecules in the peel.

Monkey Business

Monkeys have a totally different banana-peeling playbook compared to humans. Instead of our top-down approach, they go upside-down for easier peeling. Might be worth trying!

While cilantro is a taste sensation for many, some folks just can’t vibe with it, to say the least. Even legendary kitchen guru Julia Child had her reservations, which officially makes it a real issue. So, what’s up with some people and this harmless herb? Let’s dig in.

It’s All About Science

When it comes to this taste query, science has some intriguing insights. In short: If cilantro tastes like soap to you, blame it on the genes. Yep, there’s a funky variation in the olfactory receptors of some of us that turns this herb into a soapy nightmare.

Another interesting discovery is that it’s not spread evenly across the globe. In cilantro-loving hotspots like Central America and India, fewer people have this soapy aversion gene. But in East Asia, nearly 20% of the population can’t handle cilantro vibes.

A Bit of Hope

If you’re a cilantro hater, don’t despair just yet. Some studies suggest that if you keep munching on crushed cilantro, you might just flip the script on your taste buds. Still, for many, it’s a case of letting their genetic flavor compass lead the way. Who needs cilantro when you can replace it with a fresh parsley garnish?

In conclusion, next time you’re pondering the cilantro question, remember – it’s not you, it’s your genes. Keep exploring different flavors, and who knows, maybe one day you’ll find yourself in team cilantro after all.

This yummy day originated in France, and it’s focused entirely on this chic dessert, with pastry shops giving out complimentary macarons for charitable causes. Here are five surprising facts about these colorful cookies that you probably didn’t know.

Real Bread Week, celebrated around the world on the third week of February every week, is a great opportunity to go deeper into the essence of this unbeatable staple food. This week is all about celebrating the pure joy of real bread. So, what does ‘real bread’ mean and how do you get involved? Dust off your aprons, and let’s find out.

What’s Real Bread Week, Anyway?

Real Bread Week isn’t just a carb-rich bread bash (as fun as this may sound). It’s a nationwide celebration of all things fresh and additive-free. Launched in 2010 by the Real Bread Campaign, this week-long event is part of Sustain: The alliance for better food and farming. Their mission? To support the making of wholesome bread made without any additives or preservatives. It’s all about getting back to basics, caring for the environment, and savoring simple pleasures.

Making Homemade Bread on Real Bread Week

This week is a golden opportunity not only to support local bakeries making real, fresh bread; but to actually dabble with making some at home. If you’ve never attempted bread-making in your own kitchen, this may sound intimidating – so here are a few tips to get you started.

  1. Start Simple: Don’t be intimidated by fancy recipes. Start with a basic bread recipe consisting of flour, water, yeast, and salt. You’ll be amazed at how delicious it can be.
  2. Get Hands-On: Embrace the knead. There’s something therapeutic about getting your hands dirty and working the dough. Plus, it’s a great arm workout.
  3. Patience is Key: Let your dough rise at its own pace. Don’t rush the process—good things come to those who wait.
  4. Share the Love: Homemade bread is the perfect gift. Whip up a loaf for a friend or neighbor and spread the carb-filled joy.

Caviar, often linked to all things fancy, has been a coveted dinner party essential for centuries. But how well do you really know it? Let’s dive into some fun facts about this luxurious food.

Caviar Didn’t Start in Russia

Forget what you’ve heard – “caviar” didn’t come from the Russian word “Ikra.” Instead, it comes from the Persian word “khavyar,” meaning ‘egg-bearing’. The journey begins with the Persians in the 4th century, who believed sturgeon fish eggs made them strong. This tradition spread across cultures, keeping the allure of caviar alive.

Caviar Used to Be a Depression Cure

Back in the day, caviar wasn’t just a tasty treat but also used as a remedy for feeling low. Packed with nutrients like calcium, protein, Omega-3 fatty acids, and a bunch of vitamins, caviar was more than a luxury snack. So, when you enjoy those tiny pearls, know you’re getting more than just deliciousness.

Not All Caviar Was Born Equal

There are actually several, different kinds of caviar, and three main ones: Beluga, the rare and expensive star; Ossetra, a bit easier to find but still fancy, and Sevruga, the most budget-friendly kind. Each type offers a unique flavor, proving that savoring this delicacy doesn’t always mean spending a fortune.

When you think of cinnamon, what sort of recipe comes to mind? If you are like most, cinnamon is probably first and foremost an ingredient in warm-tasting desserts that you are likely to enjoy during the colder parts of the year.

While it’s true that this is cinnamon’s most common application in the kitchen, the reality is that this spice is much more versatile than you might think. Try using it in these three ways, and you might be surprised at how great it works.

Pasta Sauce

Believe it or not, cinnamon is sometimes used as an ingredient in meat sauces by immigrant communities such as the Greek one in the United States. It’s a unique flavor, but this savory taste is actually unexpectedly good especially in a meaty sauce.

Cinnamon🌿Day 6 of kitchen herbs as medicine. 💚 Sweet, warming, moistening Cinnamon. When taken in large doses, It supports metabolic function, stops excessive sweating, and lowers blood glucose levels. 🍯 It mildly thins the blood and increases circulation, balancing temperature throughout the body. Think of cinnamon when you’re feeling hot and cold, or cold and clammy and sweaty. It also nourishes and tones the intestinal wall, and can help relieve diarrhea. 🧡 It is one of the few demulcent kitchen herbs. When you suck on a cinnamon stick for a while, it gets a sort of slipperiness to it, and that is what demulcent means. This indicates that it is soothing to dry and irritated mucous membranes, such as really dry and scratchy throat. It is also antimicrobial, and it can help alleviate toothaches, and decrease harmful bacteria in the mouth. 😁 You would have to take quite a bit of cinnamon for a therapeutic dose. You can increase the amount you put in recipes for mild effect, and consider making cinnamon tea once in a while, when it’s needed. Always do your own research and pay attention to how your body reacts when using any remedy-herbal, pharmaceutical, or other. 🐒 One of the things I love about herbal medicine is that you get to spend a little time to make something for yourself, and to pay attention to the taste and sensations. And it often tastes and feels so good! ☕ I hope these posts have been inspiring you to get curious about your herbs and spices, to cook with ones you don’t always reach for, and maybe in larger amounts. Or inspiring you to make a cup of tea, and spend time enjoying that. ❤ #getcurious #teatime #herbalmedicine #kitchenherbs #herbsandspices #cinnamon #cinnamomum #demulcent #soothing #bloodsugar #hotandcold #folkmedicine #homeremedies #herbaltea #naturaldelights #culinary #usewhatyouhave #cinnamonstick #bark

Sweet and Savory Meat Dishes

During cold weather, one of my favorite ways to prepare pork chops is to bake them with a sweet and savory cinnamon apple sauce. The possibilities are endless for implementing cinnamon in meat dishes, from dry rubs to marinades. Experiment and find what works best for you.

Coffee Enhancer

Are you looking to spice up (literally) your coffee in the morning? Adding a bit of cinnamon along with milk and sugar creates a delicious drink that is easy to become addicted to. You don’t have to go to a coffee shop to enjoy unique coffee creations–the key is sometimes as simple as using a kitchen staple like cinnamon.

When you go to the store to buy olive oil, are you aware of the fact that there are several different varieties of this popular cooking oil?

From the highest-quality option of extra-virgin olive oil to the little-known, cheap version of this “liquid gold” which is denominated as being “refined,” there are lots of different options for olive oil buyers. Here is your explanation of the differences between each variety.

Extra-Virgin

Extra-virgin olive oil is the highest quality variety of the product that you can buy. Not treated in any way or altered by chemicals, it retains the essence of the olives that are used to make it. Be careful when using it for cooking, however, as its low smoke means that it can burn easily.

Virgin

Virgin olive oil is similar to the extra-virgin oil, with the only slight difference being in the content of oleic acid that it contains. It’s also not treated with any type of chemicals or unnatural processes, but might be slightly more astringent and bitter due to the higher acid content.

Refined

Refined olive oil, which is often sold as “pure” olive oil, is a lower-quality product than virgin varieties. These “pure” oils are usually made mostly with refined oil, which has been treated to remove impurities and may contain a slight amount of virgin oil. It is, however, a better option for cooking due to its higher smoke point.

Who doesn’t love a good dose of peanut butter? This creamy treat is best known as a sandwich filling, but the possibilities for peanut butter go way beyond the classic PB&J.

Why not try your peanut butter as a kitchen “swiss army knife?” Its uses and utility are endless, as these three creative uses for peanut butter demonstrate.

Fruit Dip

Fruit goes great with peanut butter, and we love using it as a dip for slices of fruit. Two of our favorite fruits to eat with peanut butter are apples and bananas, both of which are easily sliced and whose flavors are enhanced by the creamy spread.

Crepe Filling

Nutella and chocolate-filled crepes are all the rage these days, so why not try a little bit of peanut butter inside your next batch? We love melting peanut butter and then sticking it inside of these thin French pancakes as a special treat.

Ice Cream Topping

Hear us out on this one! Peanut butter actually works great as a topping for ice cream if you know which flavors to use it with. Adding a modest amount of peanut butter to a bowl of dark chocolate or vanilla ice cream is a fantastic idea, but maybe don’t try it with lemon sorbet!

Coffee and tea are two of the most popular drinks on the planet. One, or both, of these drinks is a part of the daily routine of billions of different people around the globe.

One of the main reasons that people find so much value in both coffee and tea is their caffeine content. Both of these drinks provide a boost of caffeine, a mild nervous system stimulant that is lauded for its role in helping humans maintain attention and staying awake.

So, if you are looking for a caffeine boost, which of these two drinks should you choose? Let’s explore further.

Tea

Tea is a drink that is made by pouring hot water over dried leaves that are taken from a plant that is cultivated in mild, wet places.

While green tea and black tea have significant production and flavor differences, both contain about the same amount of caffeine per 8 ounce cup. You will typically find between 25 and 35 milligrams of caffeine in an average cup of tea, which is considered to be a mild dose.

Coffee

Coffee is a drink that is made by adding hot water to the ground form of beans obtained from a genus of flowering plants that are native to Africa and Asia and cultivated in warm tropical environments.

Coffee is commonly drunk either in an espresso-based or a drip brew-based format. One shot of espresso, which measures about an ounce, contains about 50 to 60 milligrams of caffeine.

Meanwhile, a larger, eight-ounce cup of brewed coffee typically contains anywhere between 100 and 160 milligrams of caffeine, depending on the strength of the brew. Coffee is definitely your best choice for a big caffeine boost!
