We didn’t manage to get to Sicily for the summer, but that doesn’t mean we can’t eat like a local! Aside from pasta with sardines and deep-fried arancini balls (which we definitely won’t say no to), this orange Bundt cake is quintessentially Sicilian. Have it with an espresso and dream of the Mediterranean Sea!

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons grated orange zest
  • 1 ¼ cups fresh orange juice (from 3 oranges)
  • 1 ½ tablespoons baking powder
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • ½ cup vegetable oil, plus more for greasing
  • 3 large eggs

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Stir together the flour, orange zest, and baking powder in a medium bowl, and set aside.
  3. Beat the sugar, vegetable oil, and eggs with an electric mixer on high speed until almost white (around 1 minute and 30 seconds). Add in the orange juice and beat on low speed until combined. With the mixer running on low speed, gradually add the flour mixture. Beat for about 1 minute, until just combined, but be careful to not overmix.
  4. Transfer the batter to a Bundt cake tin that has been greased with vegetable oil. Bake for 40-45 minutes, until a wooden toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then invert it onto a wire rack and let it cool completely for about 1 hour.

If you travel around Italy, in each cafe and restaurant you’ll notice a particular cocktail that everyone seems to be drinking. It’s red-orange and served in a large wine glass with ice and an orange slice. This cocktail is an Aperol Spritz, and it’s a delicious way to cool off during the hot summer months in Italy’s Mediterranean climate. Slightly sweet with a bitter aftertaste, this “aperitif” is usually drunk before a meal to get you in the mood to eat. Here’s how to make it.

You’ll need just four ingredients to start out. These are Aperol (specifically Aperol, not another liqueur), Prosecco, club soda or soda water, and an orange slice. You’ll also need a wine glass, ice, and a straw for the full experience.

The Aperol spritz is incredibly easy to make. Just pour equal parts Aperol and Prosecco over ice into your wine glass, then finish with a splash of club soda and drop in an orange slice. For more bitterness add more Aperol, and for more fizz and less alcohol add more sparkling water.

It’s okay to make some substitutions here if you need to. In particular, a different sparkling white wine could be used, and any kind of fizzy water. You can also skip the orange slice if you don’t have one on hand. Another common variation on this drink is the Campari spritz, which is much stronger and more bitter. You can also look around for other spritzes to try with other liqueurs, but Aperol is the most classic.

Mozzarella cheese is one of Italy’s best-known food treasures. This cheese, which is commonly referred to as “white gold,” is popular all around the world and lends its delicious flavor to favorites such as pizza and Caprese salads.

Despite its ubiquity, there are plenty of secrets and facts about mozzarella that most don’t know. Check out these mozzarella tidbits to learn a little more!

It’s Traditionally Made With Buffalo Milk

This is the one key fact that most people don’t know about mozzarella cheese: it is traditionally prepared with milk from buffaloes! The Italian Mediterranean buffalo, a member of the water buffalo family, lends its milk to make the traditional form of mozzarella.

It’s a Great Source of Calcium

Mozzarella cheese is quite fatty and is considered in some respects to be unhealthy, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have redeeming characteristics. In fact, mozzarella cheese is a great source of calcium, with a 100 gram serving of it containing 73% of your recommended daily dose of this mineral.

You Shouldn’t Freeze It

Want to use a bunch of fresh mozzarella before it goes bad? Well, you better get to cooking, because it doesn’t hold up well to being frozen. In fact, mozzarella cheese that is frozen and then reused is quite unpalatable due to its physical composition being ruined by the process of freezing.

Italy is a pizza mecca. Anyone who spends time visiting “The Boot” will undoubtedly spend much of their vacation going from pizza spot to pizza spot in order to try the best slices on this fascinating peninsula.

One popular Italian city that many claim doesn’t have the best pizza is Milan. However, there is at least one stand-out spot that makes pies that are absolutely to die for.

Pizza AM, located on a sleepy side street to the southeast of the center of this bustling city, is undoubtedly the number one spot for delicious pizza in Milan.

Pizza AM is unique in that it doesn’t take reservations, it has a completely relaxed atmosphere, and it has a very limited menu. Instead of showing up at a specific time for which you have reserved a table, you’ll simply wait until one is available. The good thing, however, is that they offer up free shots of traditional liquors and bites of food while you wait!

Once seated, you’ll find a limited menu of traditional Napoli-style pizzas. They feature simple pies, such as Margherita, caprese, and napolitana pies, but the ingredients are so fresh and the pizzas so perfectly wood-fired that you won’t be able to expect anything more.

Be sure to give this iconic restaurant a chance to satisfy your pizza fix the next time you’re in Milan!

Have you ever tried a caprese salad before? This delicious and simple Italian salad is the perfect way to accompany your Italian meal. Made with simple ingredients but still versatile, it’s perfect to serve with a gourmet pizza or a simple pasta dish.

Here’s how to make your own caprese salad at home.

Ingredients

  • 2 large tomatoes
  • 1 ball of fresh mozzarella cheese
  • 1 bunch of basil leaves
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Balsamic reduction
  • Sea salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper

Start off by slicing the large tomatoes into circular pieces. Arrange them in a circle on top of a plate.

Next, slice the ball of fresh mozzarella into similarly-shaped pieces. Arrange them in between the slices of tomatoes.

After this, place basil leaves between the pieces of mozzarella and tomato slices on the plate.

Next, you’ll want to drizzle a moderate amount of extra-virgin olive oil on top of the basil, tomato, and cheese. After this, do the same with the balsamic reduction. But be careful not to go overboard as it can overwhelm the flavor of the other ingredients if you do so.

Finally, sprinkle freshly-ground black pepper and sea salt on your caprese salad.

Your caprese salad is now ready to eat! Enjoy and bon appetit!

These are some of the best countries for vegetarians that will stimulate you to try a whole new way of eating.

Italy

Italian restaurants, bars and bistros are world-know for their amazing cuisine. When you first think of pasta and pizza, it becomes much harder being a vegan or vegetarian. But the good thing is that their menus include so many diverse options, you won’t be missing out on a thing.

Most people find it surprising to hear that most Indians stay away from meat. This country is such a treat for anyone who enjoys the vegetarian way of eating. Aside from their rich culture, the food is one of the main reasons why travelers from all over the world go to India.

If you’re a wine enthusiast, there’s no shortage of interesting Instagram accounts to follow. Our personal favorite, however, is @wineteller. Why?

Well, this Italian sommelier is an expert in wine and telling stories. She travels the world (mostly Europe) trying delicious wine and telling the stories of the vineyards that she visits.

The large majority of the wines that she tries and the wineries that she visits are from Italy. The best wines in the world are from here, so why not?

@wineteller also travels to other countries from time to time to see sights and try wine, however. Take a look at this spectacular shot of a Spanish cava in front of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.

In addition, since the genius behind this account is a master sommelier, you can learn a lot about wine pairings with food here. Often, she shares photos of perfect wine and food combinations. I’ve learned a lot about how to pair wine with food since following @wineteller.

This account is a must-follow for any wine lover looking to learn and discover more about wine. Give her a follow today!

So many people are scared to switch to being a vegan or vegetarian, because they think their choices will be very limited.

India

Most people find it surprising to hear that most Indians stay away from meat. This country is such a treat for anyone who enjoys the vegetarian way of eating. Aside from their rich culture, the food is one of the main reasons why travelers from all over the world go to India.

Ireland

Ireland is one of the most exciting countries for vegetarians. Their dining scene is so diverse it can satisfy the taste of the pickiest eaters. Fun fact: this country has more vegetarian restaurants per capita than any other place in the world.
