It’s undeniable that soft drink brands such as Coca-Cola and Pepsi dominate in the United States and in much of the world. The king of soft drinks in the country of Mexico, however, doesn’t come from either of these two giants.

Jarritos is the soft drink par excellence in Latin America’s most populous country. Founded on August 29th, 1950 by a man named Francisco Hill, this company launched into the market with a coffee-flavored soft drink! It didn’t take him long, however, to find out that the future was in citrus and fruit-flavored drinks.

After beginning to acquire fruits such as grapefruit, mango, mandarin oranges, tamarind,  pineapples, and guava from the Mexican territory, the company started to make soft drinks featuring these quintessential Mexican flavors. By the 1960s, Jarritos became the most popular soda in the country!

Jarritos are now available in the aforementioned flavors as well as newer additions such as strawberry, watermelon, grape, and lime. They’re still usually made with natural fruit flavors and are known to be richer, less artificial, and less carbonated than more mass-produced drinks.

According to the company, more than 1,200 bottles of Jarritos are now exported per minute, meaning that these delicious sodas are now available outside of national borders. Be sure to give it a try if you find it at your local store!

Summer in Mexico is synonymous with Micheladas. This tart, spicy beer cocktail is a perfect treat for when it’s hot outside.

This cocktail recipe is super-easy to make at home. Here’s how!

Ingredients

  • 1 12-oz bottle or can of cold Mexican light beer (we recommend Pacifico or Tecate)
  • 2 teaspoons Mexican hot sauce (we recommend Cholula)
  • ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Juice of 2 fresh limes
  • Tajin seasoning
  • One large beer mug
  • Ice

Instructions

Start off by filling a beer mug about one-third of the way full with ice.

Next, you’ll want to rim the edge of the mug with Tajin, a Mexican seasoning that is readily available and contains chili, salt, and lime. If you can’t find Tajin, try mixing about a teaspoon of chili powder with a tablespoon of kosher salt to achieve the same effect.

After you do this, go ahead and pour your can or bottle of Mexican beer into the mug.

The next step is to pour in the Mexican hot sauce and the Worcestershire sauce into the mug. Then, juice the two limes and add them to the beer as fell. Stir gently with a spoon until all of the ingredients are combined well. Garnish with a lime slice if you’re feeling fancy.

Enjoy your Michelada!

Mexican beers have become popular over the past couple of decades after the export market for the product began to take off. Now, in countries like the United States, it’s actually quite easy to find beers from south of the border at affordable prices.

Mexican beers, which are mostly simple lagers, are great for summer because they are light and pair excellently with a lime and a pool.

Here are three Mexican beers that you should check out this summer.

Pacifico Clara

Pacifico Clara is my favorite Mexican beer. Its classic yellow label is easily recognizable and it can be found in many places outside of Mexico. It goes perfectly with spicy food and has a pleasant, cracker-like pilsner taste that is great for sipping.

Negra Modelo

https://www.instagram.com/p/By_fv7ilxmi/

Negra Modelo isn’t a typical Mexican lager. This fantastic beer is a dark lager, meaning that it has toasty notes and a roasted quality that makes it a heavier option than most Mexican beers. It’s unique and delicious.

Tecate

This well-known, classic Mexican lager has citrus notes, which makes it great to pair with spicy seafood dishes like shrimp tacos. It’s refreshing and a classic for sipping while poolside on a hot day.

Chelada is also super easy to make at home and is perfect for dinner parties and picnics, because it involves so few ingredients. It has a very similar taste to a margarita because of the citrus used in it, but it’s way easier and cheaper to make. It’s absolutely refreshing, tangy, and just what you want from a summer drink.

Recipe

  1. Start by rimming the glasses you’re serving the chelada in with some lime or lemon juice and dipping them into salt. You can also mix the salt with chili powder or tajin if you want a bit of spice.
  2. Then, juice one lime per drink or half a lemon. Although this sounds like a lot, it’s what gives the drink a super perky, tart taste that everyone will love.
  3. Pour in ice followed by a light lager, something that is both light in color and flavor, preferably a Mexican beer.
  4. Garnish with a lime wedge if you like and that’s it!
