Move over oat milk, there’s a new contender in the plant-based milk game—potato milk. While it may sound unexpected, potato milk has been gaining traction in recent years, particularly due to its potential as a sustainable and affordable dairy alternative. Let’s take a closer look.

Origins and Rise to Popularity

Potato milk is not entirely a new concept. However, its commercial availability and popularity have only recently begun to peak. In 2022, the Swedish company Veg of Lund introduced a potato-based beverage called DUG.  This new option joined the ranks of established plant-based milks offering consumers a unique and potentially more eco-friendly choice

Environmental Benefits

One of the most compelling reasons behind potato milk’s surge in popularity is its sustainability. Potatoes require significantly less water and land to grow compared to almonds, soy, or oats, making potato milk a more eco-friendly option. Potatoes are also relatively easy to cultivate in most climates, meaning there’s a lot of growth potential.

Taste and Availability

The taste of potato milk is often described as surprisingly neutral and mild, with a slightly sweet undertone. As for availability, while potato milk is still gaining traction, it is increasingly being stocked in health food stores and supermarkets alongside other dairy-free alternatives.

If you stop by a coffee shop chain for a hot cup of your favorite coffee and pick a plant-based milk option instead of dairy, know that it may contain a lot more sugar than you anticipate. According to a study done by Action on Sugar, a Queen Mary University London-based charity, vegan options may seem healthier, but since there are no labels on products, you may be getting way more sugar in your drinks than needed.

What They Learned

The charity’s research analyzed the content of sugar and calories in large-sized hot chocolates and seasonal lattes in high street coffee chains available in the U.K. Based on their findings, the worst option comes from Starbucks—their venti Signature Caramel Hot Chocolate with whipped cream and oat milk contains 758 calories and 93.8 grams of sugar!

When it comes to lattes, the one with the most sugar is Starbucks’ venti Gingerbread Latte with oat milk which contains 523 calories and 14 teaspoons of sugar. Other chains are not much better; the study found that nearly all beverages they included contain excessive amounts of sugar and the customers often had no idea about it.

Dairy intolerance or a vegan diet can seem like a huge obstacle to enjoying coffee drinks. While most traditional versions of drinks such as lattes and cappuccinos use dairy milk, it’s totally possible to use other types of milk to make these drinks.

Here are some options to consider if you are looking for non-dairy alternatives.

Oat Milk

Oat milk is a creamy non-dairy milk option that has a bit of natural sweetness and works great if you don’t mind a little bit of sweetness in your coffee. You might even find that adding additional sugar isn’t necessary when using oat milk.

Almond Milk

The nutty flavor of almond milk contrasts with the product, which has a look and taste that is actually quite similar to cow’s milk. If you don’t mind a bit of almond flavor in your coffee, this is a good choice for you.

Soy Milk

Soy milk is a product that is always flavored before being put on the market. The most popular option for coffee drinkers that use soy milk is the vanilla variety, meaning that your coffee drink will have some vanilla tones if you use this product.

50 years ago, it was nearly impossible to find any type of milk that didn’t come from animals. In the past, humans were only accustomed to drinking milk that came from cows, goats, and sheep.

Now, fortunately, if you’re vegan or lactose-sensitive, it’s easy to find non-dairy milk alternatives.

The only difficult thing about these options is finding the one that’s right for you, thanks to the impressive variety of products that are now available.

Here’s your guide to choosing the right non-dairy milk option.

Soy Milk

This variety is made principally with soybeans. It has a similar texture and taste to cow’s milk, which makes it a good option for milk-heavy dishes like cereal and coffee. It’s low in fat but contains lots of protein, making it quite healthy.

Almond Milk

Almond milk is a very light option for non-dairy milk. It has a watery texture and doesn’t have as much fat and proteins as other varieties. It’s good for use in desserts and other dishes that don’t call for a lot of fat. Its low-calorie status is definitely an advantage.

Oat Milk

Oat milk is actually quite similar in taste to cow’s milk, the most similar of the three options. It can tend to be a bit sweet, however, which means it isn’t the best for savory dishes. It’s quite high in carbohydrates and calories, but the taste really is second-to-none.
