Butter is a popular go-to ingredient in both baking and cooking, starring in numerous recipes from cakes and toasts to omelets and mashed potatoes. But once you start researching healthier alternatives, a whole new world opens up. Here are some of them.

Olive Oil

Hey, we said ‘healthy’—not ‘low calorie’. If you’re trying to watch your calorie intake, olive oil’s not your guy; but if pure health is what you’re aiming for, stick around. With heart-friendly monounsaturated fats comprising over 70% of its calorie make-up, it is perfect for everything from muffins to stir fry.

Avocado

Avocado is so tasty in pretty much every form—whether you’re eating it peeled and sliced with a sprinkle of salt, tossing it in your salad, or putting it on toast. But did you know it’s also an awesome butter replacement? And unlike what you might think, it works with sweet as well as savory recipes.

Greek Yogurt

If you were waiting for a low-fat item on this list, this is it. Greek yogurt is not only super nutritious, with a generous amount of protein and probiotics; it also boasts a creamy texture making it a lovely butter substitute. Use it in cakes, pancakes, or quiches and reap the benefits.

Plain butter is a great staple, but sometimes you crave a little something extra. Infused butter elevates ordinary dishes with bursts of flavor and aroma, transforming simple toast into a gourmet experience. Here are three easy ideas to try.

Herb Haven

Embrace the freshness of nature with herbal infusions. Choose your favorites—rosemary and garlic, thyme and lemon, or basil and sun-dried tomatoes. Simply soften the butter, finely chop your chosen herbs, and mix them in. Chill for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Spice Adventures

Don’t limit yourself on the possibilities here. Smoked paprika adds a smoky depth, while cayenne pepper and chili flakes bring a fiery kick. Experiment with curry powder for a touch of India. Toast your spices gently in a pan before adding them to the softened butter for enhanced flavor. Chill for at least an hour to allow the spices to infuse.

Sweet Symphony

Blend softened butter with honey and chopped nuts for a decadent spread on pancakes or waffles. For a refreshing twist, mix in orange zest and a touch of vanilla extract. Again, add your ingredients to the softened butter and chill for at least 30 minutes for the flavors to develop.

Grilled cheese sandwiches are a highly underrated food! Yes, they’re quick and easy to make, but that’s no reason to take them for granted. Two perfectly grilled slices of bread with a generous amount of cheese in between are really all a man (or woman) can ask for on some days. And guess what? There are actually super simple ways to give that basic sandwich a decent upgrade and turn it into a true gourmet meal. OK, not gourmet. But a really good meal.

Butter

The first rule for an awesome grilled cheese sandwich: butter, butter, and more butter! Did we already say ‘butter?’ But seriously, once you try adding butter to your Grilled Cheese, you’ll never be able to go back from that creamy, oily texture. For perfect results, make sure to spread a good amount of butter on the inner part of both bread slices.

Mushrooms

Mushrooms are awesome. Other than being healthy and extremely low on calories, they just add that fleshy, meat-like texture to everything you put them in. Whether it’s champignon, portobello, or cremini—you can never put too many sliced mushrooms in your grilled cheese to give it that extra boost.

Walnuts

You probably weren’t expecting this one, but you’d be surprised how well walnuts go with a grilled cheese sandwich. All you need to do is chop them and spread them evenly on the bread, and they add extra crispiness to every bite.

Just when you thought butter was a simple thing, we’re here to prove you otherwise. Butter is such an important ingredient, and sometimes the temperature really does matter! Here’s why you need to keep your butter in the right spots for optimal baking and cooking.

Room Temperature

Though this can freak out a lot of people, if you put good butter out on a dish with a lid, as long as it’s not boiling hot in your house for days on end, your health will not be at risk. The reason why you need room temperature butter, besides avoiding sad torn pieces of bread and toast, is for baking. Most recipes will call for softened butter and if you don’t have that, prepare to wait up to an hour to get it to the consistency you need, and no one has time for that!

Freezer

There are two reasons and ways to keep butter in the freezer. If you’re not a huge butter user but you still want to keep it in the house, put it straight into the freezer from the grocery store. It’ll keep for anywhere from six to nine months so you have a lot of time to play with. Also, you should also cube and store butter in the freezer for things like sauces, pie doughs, and other baking needs.

It’s almost impossible to escape butter when cooking or baking, isn’t it? This central source of fatty richness in foods that we love is an ingredient that is used in cuisines and cultures throughout the world.

Did you know that you can make a variation of butter called clarified butter, or ghee, which adds a different flavor profile to your dishes and is shelf-stable for longer than regular butter? As the removal of its milk solids offers a higher smoke point, clarified butter is great for high-temperature frying and sauteeing.

Here’s how to make it at home.

Instructions:

  1. Start off by heating whatever amount of butter you want to make in a saucepan over medium heat on your stove.
  2. After the butter is completely melted, you’ll see a layer of white and foamy milk solids begin to form on top of the butter. Remove as much of this as you can with a spoon, as this is the aim of clarified butter: the removal of milk solids.
  3. You won’t be able to remove all of them with a spoon, however, so there’s an easy trick for getting the rest out. Take a cloth coffee filter or a piece of cheesecloth and put it on top of a glass jar.
  4. Pour the butterfat and remaining milk solids through the filter and you will be left with clarified butter! It will solidify when cooled, but will quickly return to liquid form when cooking with the material.
  5. Enjoy!

When you go to the movies, a big part of the fun is in that huge bucket of popcorn you get to snack on while watching the latest release. However, if you prefer watching movies in the comfort of your home, you may want to make the delicious popcorn yourself. Here’s how to make the most buttery popcorn ever.

The first thing you should know that those popcorn are not made using butter alone. If you try to pop the kernels on hot butter you can easily end up with an unsatisfying snack. The movie-theater secret is actually in butter flavoring, as much as we hate to admit it.

Movie-style popcorn is made with coconut or canola oil. Once it’s done, it’s sprinkled with salt, butter flavoring, and yellow food coloring. That’s the magic formula for getting the golden yellow, delicious popcorn we all know and love.

If you want to avoid butter flavoring and want to use real butter instead, you can try soaking the kernels in clarified butter and letting them pop. Regular butter has around 20% of water, which will make your popcorn soggy in the end. You can make your own clarified butter (also known as ghee) or use the store-bought version.

If you’ve ever been confused by a recipe that calls for ghee, we’re here to clarify what it is. Ghee is a great cooking fat option and some argue that it’s even better than butter. You can buy it in stores or make your own – it’s really not complicated.

Ghee comes from India and it’s a type of clarified butter. You can make it by simmering the butter which will make the water in it evaporate and also remove the milk solids, leaving you with a bit smaller amount of wonderful ghee. Ghee is a bit more concentrated and higher in calories than butter. It has an amazing flavor and high smoke point, which makes it great for cooking anything.

Ghee is popular in countries with hot and humid climate because it can last a long time outside the fridge. If you’re sensitive to lactose or simply want to use something healthy and delicious for cooking, we encourage you to go for ghee. If you make it yourself, keep in mind that the amount of butter will reduce by 20% by the end of the process because of its water content.

Almond butter is officially taking over! Forget about peanut butter, this is the new health trend you need in your life. If you are not happy with the butter you can buy in the store, there is always the option of making it at home. So many food influencers do that, so you can as well. The whole process takes around half an hour.

Ingreidents

The recipe is so basic that the only thing you need is 3 cups of almonds, or about one pound. They should be unsalted.

Instructions

To prepare the almond butter, you will need a food blender or a processor. Put the almonds in the oven and cook them for 10 minutes at a temperature of 350 F degrees.

Put the almonds in a processor or blender. Use an “S”- shaped blade to turn them into a creamy consistency.

You will notice the almonds turning into a flour-like consistency, and when you continue blending, you will get the wanted butter. It will take some time, but don’t quit, you’ll get there. The whole process can take up to half an hour.

It’ll keep for anywhere from six to nine months so you have a lot of time to play with. Also, you should also cube and store butter in the freezer for things like sauces, pie doughs, and other baking needs.
