Making a big batch of chopped salad is quite convenient. You can prepare veggies and greens in bulk, mix them up, and be carefree for several days. The only issue is that with each passing day, your pre-prepared salad will taste less pleasing.

If you are tired of your chopped salad losing its freshness after spending some time in the fridge, a simple hack shared by Chef Timothy Clowers will help you avoid this.

How to Keep Chopped Salad Fresh for Longer

In a clip posted on his Instagram recently, Clowers demonstrated a salad hack that he used while working in the catering business.

After preparing a large batch of chopped salad, he covers the top of the salad with one or two layers of paper towel. Then, he takes a plastic wrap and seals the bowl tightly before storing it upside down in the fridge.

Clowers revisits the salad after 24 hours and shows how the veggies and greens seem like they have been chopped only recently. Even after being stored for 48 hours, the salad doesn’t look like it had a major change in appearance or quality. According to Clowers, if you use this hack, you can keep the chopped salad in great condition for up to four days.

Cooking fish isn’t something a lot of people like to do in their kitchen, and for a good reason. It can cause your entire home to be overwhelmed with a not-so-pleasing smell, and it can take days for it to completely go away. Luckily, there is one TikTok hack that might help you have a smell-free fish cooking session.

TikTok user @citygirlthe3rd recently shared a video in which she demonstrated an intriguing hack that they claim helps prevent the fish odor from taking over your kitchen. And it is quite simple, actually.

While frying fish on the stove, the TikToker boils cinnamon with some vanilla at the same time. According to her, it is the second time they’ve used the hack, and it worked out great.

“I also open the window, shut the room doors & light an inscent while I’m cooking and after,” she added in the caption of the video.

Now, there are some drawbacks to the hack. You might get a really strange smell combination at the start when the smell of cooked fish and the scent of cinnamon combine. Also, it will require you to be extra attentive while cooking in order for your fish not to burn.

However, we will try anything to prevent our house from smelling like fish, including this hack. You might want to do the same.

The broiler is a part of your oven that gets the hottest and basically acts like a grill.

Though you might see some recipes that utilize the broiler for the last few minutes of cooking to make something crispy or caramelized, a broiler is such a fantastic tool that is highly underrated.

If you have an oven, you should be using your broiler a lot more often.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BsT45B-hSFF/

Vegetables

Whether you’re making a soup, a salsa, or just a side dish, you should try to broil your vegetables as much as you can. Most vegetables don’t need to be cooked for long to get an amazing flavor, and some browning never hurt anyone. Plus, with a broiler, you can have those vegetables perfectly cooked in half the time of regular roasting.

Meat

https://www.instagram.com/p/BMiIQwZDm0w/

If you have really thin cuts of meat or even fish, why not use the broiler! The key is to have them thin, so they can cook all the way through. But when you do have a thin chicken cutlet or even a steak, your cooking time will be cut significantly, getting your dinner onto the table even faster. The one thing you should do is to make sure the meat is at room temperature so it will be evenly cooked under the broiler.

No oven? No problem!

Not all kitchens are created equally, but that doesn’t mean you can’t create delicious dishes. This recipe requires only a microwave to make delicate, moist fish that can never be accused of being dry, making it perfect to cook on vacation or in dorm rooms.

And the best part? It only takes 15 minutes from start to finish!

Ingredients

• 1 ½ to 2 lbs high quality white fish fillets (1-inch thickness)
• 6 tbsp low sodium, good quality soy sauce
• 2 tbsp toasted Asian sesame oil
• 2 tbsp Asian rice cooking wine
• 4 tbsp fresh ginger, thinly sliced
• 2 tsp granulated sugar
• 1 tsp garlic powder
• ½ tsp freshly ground black pepper
• ¼ cup freshly chopped cilantro leaves
• 4 stalks thinly sliced green onions

Method

  1. Dry fish fillets thoroughly with paper towels. Place in a single layer in a 9×13 glass dish or other large microwavable dish.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together all remaining ingredients (except for cilantro and green onions) until well combined. Pour evenly over the fish, ensuring that both sides of fillets are coated with sauce. Sprinkle evenly with cilantro and green onions on top of fillets.
  3. Tightly cover dish with two layers of cling wrap. Microwave on high for 4-6 minutes, depending on thickness of your fish; if your microwave doesn’t have a turntable, be sure to rotate the dish halfway into cook time. If needed, add another 1-2 minutes of cook time; cooked fish should be firm and flaky at the center.

It is so rare that you come home from work and decide to make an elaborate meal for dinner. Although that’s the dream, most people only want to spend a few minutes making food, which might not seem like enough time to make something healthy and flavorful.

However, you can do so much in just 20 minutes, so you can get yourself a healthy plate of food that’s also quite scrumptious.

Combine Homemade and Store-Bought

Ideally, everything we eat should be homemade, because it’s normally healthier, and usually saves us money. However, the most realistic option combines both worlds.

If you’re making pasta, try to make your own pesto, so you can add in lots of veggies and greens. If you’re making a soup, throw in scraps into a pot first and make your own quick broth and then add in canned or frozen items to it.

Prepare Beforehand

The best way to avoid unhealthy meals is by prepping some key items at the beginning of the week that you can re-purpose for many meals. Roast a whole chicken or boil some beans that can be used in multiple dishes.

Quick Cooking Items

Knowing how long ingredients take to cook is so key to 20-minute dinners. For example, a salmon can be roasted completely in about 12-15 minutes, so it’s a great option for dinner. Canned beans are already cooked so they only need a few minutes to reheat.

There are so many different types of oils, but did you know that each of them is actually good for certain purposes in the kitchen? If you want to cook the tastiest and the safest foods, you need to consider what type of oil to use and whether it will get the job you need done. This is the ultimate oil guide, so you can always cook your best.

Frying

https://www.instagram.com/p/BvDsSxfF1D0/

Whether it’s just a couple inches or a full pot for deep frying, not every oil is up to the job. The best oils for this are peanut oil, vegetable oil, and any animal fats. This is because all of these oils have a high smoke point, which means that they can be heated to high temperatures and not burn and give off bad chemicals.

Sauteing

https://www.instagram.com/p/BvNpOKGg8vf/

For simple sautes, you can use olive oil, grapeseed oil, and refined coconut oil. These oils have a mild taste and will create heavenly vegetable dishes for you, but should not be cooked for a long time or at a high heat.

Finishing and Dressing

When you need to simply finish a dish or make a dressing of sorts, some of the best oils for that is extra virgin olive oil, sesame oil, and chili oil. These oils are fragrant and can be a bit strong, so you want to make sure to use them with restraint.

You might sometimes be disappointed by the way you cooked your meat. But worry not, there is hope! You may be cooking your meat wrong, but there are easy ways to fix this.

Resting

https://www.instagram.com/p/Buoqb22lnne/

Resting is one of the most important parts of cooking meat. When you rest the meat, it has time to reabsorb all the juices that spilled out of it, making it tender and juicy again. Allow your meat to rest at least 5-10 minutes before cutting into it and you’ll see a big difference.

Flipping

If you’re sauteing or grilling meat, it can be really tempting to flip the meat a lot. But this will only hurt you in the end. The meat will release when it’s ready to flip, so be patient and you’ll be much happier with the result in the end.

Temperature

Temperature is everything when you’re cooking meat. First of all, take the meat out of the fridge before you cook it, so it isn’t completely cold when it hits the pan. Also, make sure that pan you’re using is hot enough your meat might stick and it won’t sear.

Soups are perfect to have on a rainy day, or just in the fridge for a quick meal. Usually they are very easy to make, but if you find that you aren’t completely satisfied with your soups, try using these tips to boost them up a bit.

Base

Depending on what type of soup you are making, there is going to be different base vegetables to build the soup. Most of them, however, will include garlic or onions, and often carrots and celery. Whatever you use, make sure that they are cooked well before you add any other ingredients, and that you season them with salt as they cook!

Stock

Do you order miso soup when you go to restaurants because you love it but don't know how to make it? Do you love soup but don't have the patience to wait hours for a stock to simmer? 🍲 The solution to these problems my friends, is making dashi. Some of you may have seen it on my story two days ago, dashi is a stock commonly used in Japanese food such as ramen, miso soup (literally just miso paste and dashi), various stews etc. It's SO easy to make!! Takes like 40 minutes max! And you can make another batch of it with the ingredients leftover from the first batch! Two for one bitches 💁 🍛 There are different types of dashi, typically made from some combination of kombu (dried kelp), katsuobushi (bonito flakes, those things they put on top of takoyaki!), shiitake mushrooms, and anchovies. The most basic dashi is made with the first two ingredients, soak kombu in water for about 30min, bring water to a boil and take it out, add katsuoboshi, and then bring down to a simmer for 10min. Strain (don't squeeze the katsuobushi, do that during the second batch) and voila! Basically liquid gold that will elevate anything that you add it to! I added shiitake for extra umaminess and just cuz I had them, you can even just make shiitake dashi of you're vegan! Not gonna go into all of this because word limit 😬 And like 99% of you probably have stopped reading, but maybe when I get my blog going. 🍜 K make good food and I'll post some stuff i make with it soon love you all bye ❤ #foodprep #foodshare #cookingtips #cookingideas #homemadestock #dashi #dashisoup #japanesecuisine #japanesefood #asianfood #umami #soupstock #soupseason #recipeshare #easyrecipes #mtlfoodie #homecooking

A post shared by Izzy D. (@mindfullofcooking) on

If you’re using stock cubes or store-bought stock, you might want to consider switching to homemade. This will not only cut salt out of your dish, but you can control what goes in it. If you really don’t have time, go to your local butcher and see if they sell stocks there.

Dairy

If you’re adding milk or cream to your soup, make sure that it has been warmed slightly, or it could curdle in the soup. You should also turn off the heat before you put the dairy in, so it’s the last thing to go into the soup.

There are so many beenfits to cooking your eggs in a muffin tin, so here’s why you should start.

Time Saver

Normally cooking eggs is not a process where you can really step away from it. But, when you put them in the oven, you just have to set the timer and you can walk away and go about your business. Also, once the eggs are cooked, you can save them in the fridge for up to 4 days, which means you can have breakfast for the entire work week!

Feed a Crowd

Whether there are a lot of people in your house or you want to prepare for a big brunch, there’s no reason you need to stress out over eggs. Muffin tin eggs make it easy to do big batches of eggs so no everyone is full and satisifed.

Frying

Whether it’s just a couple inches or a full pot for deep frying, not every oil is up to the job. The best oils for this are peanut oil, vegetable oil, and any animal fats. This is because all of these oils have a high smoke point, which means that they can be heated to high temperatures and not burn and give off bad chemicals.

Sauteing

Although it seems like a strange place to make eggs, cooking them in a muffin tin actually makes a lot of sense. All you have to do is set your oven to 350 F, lightly grease a muffin tray, and crack an egg into each one of them. Add a little salt and pepper, and cook them for 15 minutes.
