  • Some cardamom powder (optional)
  • 5 tablespoons chopped almonds
  • 6 tablespoons dry grated coconut

All you need to do is look at the full Instagram post by @meghnasfoodmagic for clear, step-by-step instructions. Well, you also need to actually follow them, but it’s entirely doable, and the process is quite quick. Plus, your body will thank you.

Spices are absolutely essential to any Indian dish, and Indian food has a diverse range of spice profiles across dishes and regions. If you cook a lot of Indian cuisine, then you probably go through your spices somewhat quickly. There’s no way to really avoid this, and of course spices are meant to be used—there’s nothing wrong with having to restock often. But here’s how to help your spices go as far as they can.

Marinate the Protein

Whether you’re using tofu, fish, or chicken, marinating it beforehand will make a huge difference. You can use whole spices (combined with plain yogurt or some other liquid) if you have them on hand and leave your protein in the fridge for at least a few hours. This way it will soak up a ton of flavor on its own and you won’t need to worry too much about getting it flavored during cooking.

Toast Your Spices

One step which may seem trivial is toasting your spices before you add any liquid or water-emitting vegetables. You’ll usually do it after sautéing your onions and garlic-ginger paste. Simply sprinkle on your desired spices and mix up with the onions, allowing to toast for around 30 seconds before adding the next ingredient. This will help really bring out the flavors in the spices and make your kitchen smell great.

Add in the Marinade

In many cases, adding in a bit of the marinade to your curry or broth will add a ton of flavor as well. Just be sure to get it up to boiling to kill off any trace of the raw meat you marinated, if you used meat. If this is something you’d like to try, you may want to use powdered spices for your marinade rather than whole so that you don’t end up with whole spices in your finished dish.

Indian tea, better known as chai, is a rich, milky, steaming hot, and boldly flavorful beverage. The word Chai simply means tea, while the word Masala, which is often paired with it, means spice. Preparing it at home is fairly simple; it is not so much a recipe that you need as knowing the right method. These are the steps to making Indian chai at home.

Knowing the Basics

  1. Bring water, milk and chai spices of choice to a simmer in a small saucepan on the stove.
  2. Reduce heat and add in black tea.
  3. Wait for tea to steep.
  4. Strain the warm spiced mixture into a mug; to hold back the whole spices and tea leaves.
  5. Stir some sugar into your chai and sweeten it to taste.

Getting Specific

As for the actual spices, there are ground blends of sweet spices you can find at any Indian grocery, but the flavor will likely be more poignant if you use fresh spices. Some of the most popular options include cinnamon ginger, coles, fennel, and star anise. For authenticity’s sake, it should be generously sweetened. There are really no exact measurements, it all depends on your personal preference and the number of servings you need.

India is world-famous for its unique and exotic cuisine, but also for the most delicious street foods that are sold in portable stalls and carts. Make sure to try at least some of these tasty foods and make your visit to India even more memorable.

Kachori

Kachori is one of the most popular spicy snacks in India. It’s a deep-fried bread stuffed with a spiced filling and is usually served with curried potato. Each region in India has a different way of preparing kachori, but they say the best place to have it is Bikaner.

Bhelpuri is a savory snack made from puffed rice, veggies and tamarind sauce. This snack is very popular in India, especially in Mumbai where it’s sold in street carts and cafés.

Kati Roll

Kati Roll is a kebab wrapped in a paratha bread usually served with sauces like ketchup or chili. If you buy this popular snack on the streets of India, it’ll be piping hot and wrapped in paper.

Vada Pav

This is actually an Indian version of the American hamburger, and as you can imagine, it’s very popular among tourists, because it’s tasty and pretty cheap.

One thing that you absolutely must get right if you want to successfully master Indian cooking are the spices used in this incredibly rich cuisine’s flavor repertoire.

Here are four spices that you absolutely must have in your spice rack if you want to add flavor to your cooking and master Indian flavoring techniques.

Cumin

Found in cooking throughout the world, from the Middle East to Mexico, this warm spice is also commonly employed in Indian dishes. A common addition to curry dishes, Indian chefs love it due to its aromatic nature and ability to combine with other flavors.

Coriander

This herb’s seeds provide another classic taste when making Indian food. In fact, it often pairs with cumin! Its taste is described as lemony and citrusy and is often used in conjunction with hotter and more intense flavors.

Turmeric

Have you ever seen an Indian dish with a bright yellowish-orange color? It probably owed its striking appearance to this spice, which has a flavor that many compare to ginger. It’s a must-have for Indian cooking.

Cardamom

This intense spice must be used with caution due to its ability to overwhelm other spices, but it’s a great addition to many dishes such as curries and rice dishes. It adds complexity due to its spicy, citrusy, and herbal nature and is simply unmistakable.

When you think of food from India, you probably think about dishes that are internationally known from this South Asian country. While curry and tandoori dishes might be what you’d seek out if you were to travel to India, the truth is that there are all kinds of cuisines to try there.

Sukrit & Kashish Jain, the curators of @thegreatindianfoodie, live in India’s massive capital of Delhi. On their fascinating Instagram account, they share some of the most mouth-watering snaps of food that they find throughout their city on a daily basis.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BxPl5zLDqES/

You can check out all kinds of lesser-known traditional dishes from India on the Jains’ account. As these food bloggers are intimately aware of where to get the best food from their region and country in Delhi, you can count on snapshots of mouth-watering foods such as this pav bhaji.

Don’t get confused, however. Delhi’s gastronomic scene goes way beyond Indian food. The Jains give outsiders a window into just how diverse the offerings in this metropolis of 20 million people are, proving that there is a food style for everyone there.

So, if you’re curious about Delhi’s culinary scene, I highly recommend this account. You’ll be blown away by just how much variety and quality can be found there.

Indian cuisine is one of my personal favorites. Featuring a wide variety of different influences and compositions based on the region of the country from which it comes, Indian cuisine is extremely diverse and delicious.

Shivesh is a Delhi-based food blogger and photographer. He shares fantastic recipe ideas for baking, and photos of food from around his country at his account, @shivesh17. Most of his recipes are some twist on traditional Indian food and ingredient made into a pastry or dessert form.

The most impressive thing is that Shivesh is only 22 years old! Despite this, he’s already published a cookbook of his favorite baking recipes called Bake With Shivesh.

While most of the ideas and recipes that Shivesh shares use traditional Indian ingredients and are inspired by his home country, he isn’t afraid to step out of the box. For instance, these pancakes are more of an American classic, but they sure look good!

So, if you’re looking to add Indian-inspired pastries and desserts to your reputation, Shivesh is the guy you’ll want to follow. You’ll be wowing everyone in no time with his delicious recipes!

Indian food is so wide and varied since every area of the country has its own cooking traditions. The flavors and aromas are so enticing, and usually vegetarian or even vegan. If you love cooking at home but haven’t quite mastered your Indian dishes, here are some ways to amp them up.

Ghee

Ghee is a clarified butter often used in Indian cooking. If you haven’t used it before, it could hold the secret to making your food taste better. Ghee is really flavorful but is also better than butter since it doesn’t have any milk solids.

Spices

A lot of times, Indian recipes will call for whole spices like cumin, mustard, cardamom, and more. Although these spices work fine if you have the ground varieties, nothing beats the aroma and flavor of fresh whole spices. So if you can, try to incorporate more whole spices into your cooking and see if that doesn’t help.

Traditions

Although there are always ways to make cooking easier – such as using kitchen tools like food processors – if a recipe calls to do something by hand, go through the trouble of doing it. Grinding ingredients in a mortar and pestle gives such a different flavor and texture than grinding it in a machine. Even though it does take more time, it’s totally worth it.

Are you obsessed with Indian cuisine? Well if you are, this traditional aloo gobi recipe is so good! Made with potatoes, cauliflower and all the best spices, it’s heaven for the taste buds.

Ingredients

The ingredients you need are:
2 medium baking potatoes
1/2 head cauliflower
2 minced serrano chile peppers
1 teaspoon ginger paste
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon garam masala
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
2 teaspoons ground coriander
1/2 teaspoon cumin seed
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
3 tablespoons olive oil
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 small onion cut into slices

The potatoes should be cut into 1-inch pieces and the cauliflower into florets.

Instructions

Get a large pot and heat 2 tablespoons oil. Add the cumin seeds for a few seconds, then include the onion. Cook it until it’s light brown and mix it with the turmeric, coriander, garam masala, paprika, and cayenne. Continue cooking for half a minute more.

When you’re done, you can include the potatoes in the mix. Cook them covered for 5 to 7 minutes.

Then, add in the cauliflower for another 20 minutes. The pot should be covered during this time.

Finish off by adding the lemon juice and the 1 tablespoon oil on the edges of the cooking pot. After 3 to 5 minutes your aloo gobi is done.
