While yakiniku isn’t well-known outside of Japan, it’s undeniable that this Japanese gastronomic tradition is an integral part of the culture of food in the Land of the Rising Sun.

So, what exactly is yakiniku?

Well, to put it plainly, this tradition can be described as a form of Japanese BBQ. At a yakiniku restaurant or at a home where this type of food is prepared, diners participate in an interactive experience in which they grill premium-quality cuts of meat on a personal grill.

You might be thinking that yakiniku sounds pretty similar to Korean BBQ, and you’d be right. In fact, this tradition originated with Japanese people who brought this Korean tradition back to their home country. They’ve definitely managed to put their own twist on the art, however.

In Japan, yakiniku focuses largely on Wagyu beef products. As you may know, Wagyu beef is considered one of the most prestigious meats in the world, and its quality is on full display in yakiniku.

Beef is the king when it comes to Japanese BBQ, but you can also sometimes find other meat cubes from animals such as pigs, as well as offal products like beef heart. Commonly, diners choose to eat side dishes such as egg yolk rice, cabbage, and seaweed.

The meats are made even better when enjoyed with soy sauce and sesame-based dips that give this Japanese BBQ meat a final kick that is unforgettably good.

If you find yourself in Tokyo or near a Japanese BBQ restaurant, give it a try and enjoy one of the most unforgettable meals of your life.

Sushi can be food that is confusing and difficult to understand for those that don’t have much familiarity with it.

Here, we present a guide to the main varieties of sushi to help you better understand sushi and to enjoy it even more.

Maki

The first variety of sushi that we’ll mention in our guide is the most common sushi variety, especially at foreign restaurants. This type of sushi is what is often referred to as a “roll,” with an outer layer of seaweed enclosing sushi rice, fish, and vegetables.

Nigiri

Nigiri is one of the most elegant forms of sushi. It consists of a chunk of sushi rice with a topping served on it, which is usually a high-grade fish. Simple, yet delicious, it is a versatile variety that allows for lots of creativity.

Sashimi

Sashimi is the simplest form of sushi. It literally consists only of fish or shellfish served by itself and with no rice or vegetables. It is the form of sushi that you’ll want to go to with high-quality seafood since it lets the flavor shine.

Temaki

Temaki is the least-known variety on the list, but one of the most exciting. It it a “cone” of sushi that has been rolled by hand. This variety is wrapped in seafood which creates a sort of burrito with rice, fish, and vegetables on the inside. Yum!

You’ve probably already seen those fluffy, super-soft Japanese pancakes on Instagram. Give them a try with this easy recipe.

Ingredients:

The ingredients list includes 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract, 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 large egg yolk and 3 large egg whites, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 1 1/4 cups milk, 3 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar, maple syrup, 4 tablespoons melted and cooled unsalted butter, 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BrNU-iCjErC/?fbclid=IwAR11wBOHx62hsMN9VTZtw45VuqiKepoK4sos0PicDsFp08Zcil_11KaAxzw

Instructions:

Use a bowl to mix the confectioners’ sugar, flour, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, mix the melted butter, milk, egg yolk, and vanilla. In a third one, beat the cream of tartar and egg whites. Use medium speed for two minutes.

Slowly add the milk in the flour mix and start stirring. Also include one third of the egg whites mix in. Continue adding the egg whites slowly until you’re done.

You will need a ring mold that is around 3 inches wide and 2 1/2 inches high. Spray it with cooking spray and also prepare a skillet. Place it on medium-low heat. Also, put the ring mold in there. You can start pouring the Japanese pancakes mixture in the mold, reaching one half of the height. You should cook around 5 minutes on each side. You can eat them right away and serve them with the maple syrup.

In many cultures and countries, traditional food or drinks are consumed on New Years’ Eve when the clock strikes midnight.

Here are three of the strangest gastronomic New Years’ traditions from around the world.

Spain: 12 Grapes

In Spain, it is tradition to consume 12 grapes at the strike of the clock on New Years’ Eve. What’s so strange about this? Well, Spaniards stuff one grape into their mouth at the stroke of every second beginning at 11:59:48 until their mouths are full at midnight and they can finally eat them.

Pickled Herring: Scandinavia, Germany, and Poland

Pickled herring is made of dehydrated herring, a small fish that lives throughout the northern waters of the Atlantic, which has been marinated in a brine solution.

It might not sound appetizing, but in these Northern European cultures, eating pickled herring on New Years’ Eve is supposed to bring good fortune for the new year.

Soba Noodles: Japan

A New Years’ Eve tradition in Japan is to eat soba noodles when the clock strikes midnight on New Years’.

Soba noodles are made from buckwheat flour and are usually eaten in a broth with vegetables and spices. Eating these noodles on January 1st is supposed to cleanse the body and mind and prepare it for the year ahead.

Teriyaki sauce originally was only used in Japan for specific broiling and grilling specific types of fish. In the western part of the world, teriyaki is used from everything from fish, to chicken, to burgers, and more. Teriyaki is a sweet sticky sauce that works super well with a variety of dishes and is really simple to make at home. Impress yourself and your guests by whipping up some homemade teriyaki sauce for your next dinner party.

Ingredients

For this sauce, the most important ingredients are brown sugar and soy sauce. Those are the main flavors that come out, but ground ginger, honey, and garlic all help it along.

Method

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine water, brown sugar, soy sauce, honey, chopped garlic, and ground ginger. Mix well so everything is incorporated.
  2. While that cooks, make a cornstarch slurry. This is a thickening agent that will help the sauce not be as runny. All you have to do is combine some cornstarch with water and that’s all!
  3. Pour the slurry in and continue to stir the sauce until it’s as thick as you like. You can also thin it out with a little water.
  4. Store in a jar for up to 2 weeks!

You’ve probably already seen those fluffy, super-soft Japanese pancakes on Instagram. Give them a try with this easy recipe.

Ingredients:

The ingredients list includes 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract, 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 large egg yolk and 3 large egg whites, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 1 1/4 cups milk, 3 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar, maple syrup, 4 tablespoons melted and cooled unsalted butter, 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar.

Are you a fan of sushi, the most well known and beloved Japanese food known to man?

If so, we highly recommend that you go running to Instagram immediately to follow @thesushigallery. This account is a collection of all of the best sushi photos that are available on Instagram.

The Sushi Gallery is an anonymous account created by a sushi lover that also has a Tumblr page (idreamofsushi.tumblr.com). Here, the account shares the most mouth-watering photos that its fans and followers send them for our pleasure.

Your eyes (and stomach) will delight at the rolls that are shared by The Sushi Gallery. Sushi is an aesthetically pleasing food with its swirls of whites and bright colors, and some of the snapshots shared by this page are absolutely mesmerizing.

My favorite thing about this account is that it invites everyone to participate. This isn’t one person that’s making sushi themself and then sharing it to the world. The Sushi Gallery uploads pictures of sushi from Instagram users around the world that are united by their love for this delicacy.

So, not only can you follow @thesushigallery, but if you find an especially beautiful-looking or delicious nigiri or roll, be sure to send it over. From vegetarian sushi to dark pink tuna slabs, all varieties and variations are welcome and beloved here.

You won’t regret following this fantastic foodie profile one bit.

Gyoza is a dumpling hailing from Japan which is very similar to a Chinese potsticker. They actually were created in China, but have been changed slightly and adapted heavily into Japanese cuisine. What makes them different is their slightly thinner dough as well as being smaller than a potsticker. These delicious dumplings may seem like hard work to make, but they take only an hour and three ingredients. Let’s get cooking!

Method

  1. Measure out 2 cups of flour and sift into a large bowl
  2. Boil 1/2 cup of water and dilute 1/2 teaspoon of salt into it
  3. Combine the water and the flour together with a rubber spatula until everything is mixed together
  4. Knead the dough for ten minutes
  5. Divide the dough in half, and roll each half into a long log
  6. Wrap each log in plastic wrap and allow it to rest for 30 minutes
  7. Cut the log into 1-1 1/2 inch pieces
  8. Sprinkle some cornstarch onto your surface and roll the pieces into a ball
  9. Smash them down with your hand, and then take a rolling pin and flatten them further
  10. Use a cookie cutter to cut out perfect circles and use the scraps to make more wrappers
  11. Stuff with your choice of filling, fry, and enjoy!
