The Ancient Greeks smothered themselves in olive oil, while Cleopatra supposedly bathed in donkey’s milk. Natural products have long been used in skin and hair care, and often edible items can double up as beauty products. If you’re keen to try the benefits of natural skincare, or simply feel like experimenting with what your kitchen cupboard can do, read on for three homemade skincare product recipes.

Coconut Moisturizer

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup of coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon of corn flour
  • 1 teaspoon of rose essence
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil

Instructions:

  1. Heat the coconut oil in a pan. As it starts to melt, add the sunflower oil and the rose essence.
  2. Remove from the heat once the ingredients are well combined. Whisk in the corn flour, you can also blend the mix if you wish.
  3. Let the mix cool completely, then decant into a pot or jar, ready for use on your skin!

Olive Oil Hair Mask

Ingredients:

  • ¾ cup of olive oil
  • 2 egg whites
  • 3 tablespoons of honey

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, whisk the egg whites into the olive oil until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
  2. Add the honey, stirring it in slowly.
  3. When you’re ready to use the mask, wet your hair and then coat it in the mix. Wrap it in a towel (or plastic wrap), and leave it on for at least half an hour. Rinse out thoroughly.
  4. Be aware that this mask will only keep for up to one week in the fridge.

Apple Cider Vinegar Toner

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar
  • ½ cup of sparkling water
  • ½ teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda

Instructions:

  1. Mix all of the ingredients together, taking care that the sparkling water doesn’t lose too much of its fizz.
  2. Soak a cotton pad with this mix and swipe it over your skin, or spritz it over your face using a spray bottle.

There is a lot of talk about whether sugar is really bad for you. Whatever your body tells you is probably best for you, but there are a lot of different ways to get sugar that go beyond just the white stuff you buy at the grocery store. If you want different kinds of sugar in your life, here is a good list to try!

Bananas

Bananas are naturally really sweet and add a nice sweetness to a lot of different baked goods in place of sugar. You can mash it up and make it into pancake, sweeten up your oatmeal, cakes, and more!

Dates

Dried fruit is always sweeter than regular fruit, and dates are especially sweet in a really interesting way. They actually take on a caramel-like flavor, so it’s perfect to pulse them in a food processor and add them in place of caramel or brown sugar.

Honey

Although some people say honey is broken down in the same way white sugar is, the difference is that the taste is a lot richer, and it also has a ton of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, whereas white sugar doesn’t have any redeeming qualities besides sweetness.

Summer is such a fun and freeing time of the year, and that can all change with one bad bite from a mosquito. Unfortunately, there is little to do with their existence, but there are ways to repel them naturally! Mosquitoes rely on their sense of the smell to find humans, so if you trick them by changing your scent, you have a greater chance they won’t come looking for you, so eat these foods and finally enjoy summer!

Chilli Peppers

Capsaicin is the chemical in peppers that make them so hot. They are also a natural bug repellent! Mosquitoes cannot stand the smell of peppers that are high in this chemical, so start packing on the heat in your dishes.

Grapefruit

Grapefruits are a delicious, juicy way to start your day. They also contain a compound called nootkatone which is a natural insect repellent and pesticide. This makes grapefruit a must eat fruit this summer, so slice it up for a snack or even add it to salads to make them juicier and tart.

Lemongrass

Lemongrass is an ingredient used often in Asian cooking, especially in Thai cuisine. This plant contains high amounts of citronella, which is found in many bug repellents.
