The Ancient Greeks smothered themselves in olive oil, while Cleopatra supposedly bathed in donkey’s milk. Natural products have long been used in skin and hair care, and often edible items can double up as beauty products. If you’re keen to try the benefits of natural skincare, or simply feel like experimenting with what your kitchen cupboard can do, read on for three homemade skincare product recipes.

Coconut Moisturizer

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup of coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon of corn flour
  • 1 teaspoon of rose essence
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil

Instructions:

  1. Heat the coconut oil in a pan. As it starts to melt, add the sunflower oil and the rose essence.
  2. Remove from the heat once the ingredients are well combined. Whisk in the corn flour, you can also blend the mix if you wish.
  3. Let the mix cool completely, then decant into a pot or jar, ready for use on your skin!

Olive Oil Hair Mask

Ingredients:

  • ¾ cup of olive oil
  • 2 egg whites
  • 3 tablespoons of honey

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, whisk the egg whites into the olive oil until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
  2. Add the honey, stirring it in slowly.
  3. When you’re ready to use the mask, wet your hair and then coat it in the mix. Wrap it in a towel (or plastic wrap), and leave it on for at least half an hour. Rinse out thoroughly.
  4. Be aware that this mask will only keep for up to one week in the fridge.

Apple Cider Vinegar Toner

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar
  • ½ cup of sparkling water
  • ½ teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda

Instructions:

  1. Mix all of the ingredients together, taking care that the sparkling water doesn’t lose too much of its fizz.
  2. Soak a cotton pad with this mix and swipe it over your skin, or spritz it over your face using a spray bottle.
