With only two ingredients and around ten minutes of your time, you can have creamy homemade cashew butter. Cashew butter is a delicious vegan spread you can make any time you get bored with your regular peanut butter, and you can use it in many different dishes or it can be eaten as a snack. Making your own cashew butter instead of buying some at the store is a good idea because you’ll know exactly what you’ve put in it and it will save you money! All that sounds awesome, but how do you actually make it?

Ingredients:

We mentioned you only need two ingredients, but you can even leave out the oil and blend the butter just a little bit longer.

  • roasted, salted cashew nuts
  • coconut oil

Instructions:

  1. If you bought raw nuts, salt and roast them upfront. Roasted nuts will release the oils much faster than the raw ones and make the whole process easier.
  2. Put the nuts in the food processor and blend for around five minutes.
  3. Add coconut oil, if you’re using it, and keep blending.
  4. Scrape the edges of the bowl a few times to make sure everything blends evenly.

With legumes being struck off the menu for many diets these days, peanut butter as the spread of choice is being challenged by other nuts coming through the ranks.

Here are some alternatives to peanut butter that you can make yourself.

And what’s great about making your own nut butters is that they are usually better than store-bought and you can use any nuts you fancy!

Almond Butter

Loaded with antioxidants and Vitamin E, almonds help to regulate cholesterol and blood pressure, improve your skin, and keeps you more regular due to all its fibre.

Roast about 2 cups of almonds and place in a food processor with some avocado or coconut oil and feel free to add some vanilla essence and even cinnamon for flavor.

Macadamia Butter

Macadamias are full of all the good fats you need in your life, and can also help prevent diabetes and even weight gain.

Creamy macadamia nut butter can be made even more indulgent by adding in melted white chocolate!

Cashew Butter

Cash(ew) us outside, how ‘bout that!

The Portuguese seeds boast high levels of iron, magnesium, zinc, copper, phosphorus, and manganese. They’re also insanely delicious. Even more so if you add in freeze-dried strawberries when processing.

The way to make any kind of nut butter is simple. All you have to do is put as many unsalted nuts as you want into a food processor and let it rip. Usually it will only take a few minutes to get a creamy consistency, and you’ll have nut butter! At that point, you can taste it to see if you want to add any salt and how much is tasty for you.

Variations

If you want to jazz up your nut butter, you can do so in many different ways! You can add in seeds like pumpkin, sunflower, or flax to give it a different taste and texture. Making your own nut and seed butters may seem intimidating, but really it couldn’t be easier. If you have a food processor and some empty jars, you can make all the nut and seed butters of your dreams. Not only is it easy, it takes almost no time, and you can also control what ingredients go into them, making it a much healthier option.

Peanut Butter

Put 2 cups of dry roasted peanuts in your food processor. Simply let it run for 4-5 minutes and watch it go through the stages of being crumbly to turning into a smooth liquid-like substance. If it needs a little help, you can add in a touch of a neutral oil. To bring the peanut butter to life a little, add in a pinch of sea salt.

Sunflower Seed Butter

If you or someone in your life has a nut allergy, make this sunflower seed butter for them! Just put  3 cups of hulled sunflower seeds on a baking sheet and roast for 10-15 minutes at 350F degrees. Once they’ve been toasted, just pour them into the food processor and let them process for 5-10 minutes until a creamy, smooth, butter has formed. You can then add in a bit of sugar or salt if you like.
