Roasted potatoes are a classic side dish. However, achieving that perfect crunch can sometimes be elusive. The secret ingredient to attaining this culinary delight? Baking soda. This might sound surprising, but a pinch of baking soda can transform your roasted potatoes from just good to irresistible. Let’s jump in.

Ingredients:

  • 4 large potatoes
  • 8 cups of water
  • 2 tablespoons of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
  • Olive oil for coating
  • Additional salt to taste
  • Optional: Fresh herbs or garlic for extra flavor

Instructions:

  1. Start by peeling and cutting the potatoes into cubes.
  2. Bring the water to a rapid boil. Add salt and baking soda.
  3. Add the cubed potatoes to the boiling water. Cook them until they are tender (about 10 min).
  4. After the potatoes are tender, strain them and let them air dry on a tray for a few minutes.
  5. Once slightly dried, drizzle them with olive oil and sprinkle with a bit more salt. Add additional seasonings if you’d like.
  6. Preheat your oven to 400°F. Spread the potatoes out in a single layer on a baking sheet.
  7. Roast the potatoes for about 45-60 minutes, or until they are golden and crispy. Halfway through the roasting time, flip the potatoes to ensure they brown evenly on all sides.

If you are fond of roasted potato, but find that yours are lacking the crispiness factor that you so desire, then you have come to the right place. We have compiled a short list of tips for making the crispiest roast potatoes that you and your guests will love! Keep reading and thank us later.

Boil First

Slice your potatoes into french fries and boil them until potatoes on the stove for 5-10 minutes in hot water before you roast them. This will help move along the cooking process and make them extra crispy.

Grease the Cookie Sheet

Prepare for extra grease! Add about a cup of cooking oil such as avocado or olive oil to your cookie sheet and put in the oven on its own for a few minutes to sizzle up. Then once its sizzling throw your potatoes in it and coat with the hot oil and various spices. Continue the cooking process for another 20-35 minutes.

Roast on Top Oven Tray

For the last ten minutes of the cooking process, put your potatoes on the top rack of the oven to get extra crispy on top without burning. This step is crucial, and you must watch the potatoes and baste every few minutes so they cook evenly and do not burn! Make sure to check the potatoes frequently until they have the crispiness you desire! Take them out of the oven, let them cool, and garnish with some coarse salt and enjoy!

Roasted potatoes are the perfect side dish for any meal, whether you’re cooking for your family or hosting a dinner party. They’re easy to make, versatile, and always delicious. Here’s how to make them so mouthwatering that everyone will be asking for seconds.

Ideal Potatoes

To start, choose the right type of potato. Yukon Gold or red potatoes work well for roasting, as they have a creamy texture and a slightly sweet flavor. Cut them into bite-sized pieces, leaving the skin on for extra flavor and nutrients.

Prepping It

Preheat your oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Toss the potatoes with olive oil, salt, and pepper, and any other seasonings you like, such as rosemary or thyme. Spread them out on the baking sheet in a single layer, making sure there’s plenty of space between each piece.

Roasting Them

Roast the potatoes for about 25-35 minutes, or until they’re golden brown and tender. Turn them over once or twice during cooking to ensure they cook evenly on all sides. Serve them hot out of the oven with a sprinkle of fresh herbs or a dollop of sour cream.

Ask any Irish person, the word “potato” does not describe one thing, but a full range of products that fall under the “potato” title. These types not only look different, but they also have different textures and flavors, and thus should be used for different purposes. Here are a few examples of types of potatoes and what you should do with them.

Russet

One of the world’s most popular potatoes, sometimes called Rooster potatoes. They have a russet-colored skin and a starchy flesh. You can bake, fry, or boil them, and they are great for mashing. They are less suitable for stuffing as they do not hold their shape well.

French Fingerling

Smooth skins and moist flesh, these keep their shape after cooking and so are great for roasting and braising, but also for potato salads. Their flesh is considered waxy, so they might not be the best choice if you’re making a mash.

New Potatoes

Another global favorite, are smaller, sweeter, and waxier than the fully grown types, and have relatively thin skins that would break easily. Make the best of them by brushing them with seasoned oil and letting them roast in the oven.

If you want super crispy roasted potatoes, it’s usually best if you just take any regular potatoes and dice it up small. However, it ends up not necessarily looking super beautiful, and if you want something that tastes incredible but also still looks very aesthetically pleasing, you can use baby potatoes in this simple recipe!

Ingredients

  • 1 pound of baby potatoes of any color
  • 3 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons of salt plus more for salting water
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon of chili powder
  • Pepper to taste

Recipe

  1. First, bring a large pot of water to a boil. Once it’s at a boil, salt the water and add in the potatoes. You want to first boil the potatoes a bit because it’ll start the cooking process and give you a crispier potato in the end.
  2. Boil the potatoes for 10-15 minutes, drain the water, and dry them off if necessary with a towel.
  3. Put the potatoes back into the pot or a bowl with the olive, salt, garlic powder, chili powder, and pepper to your taste.
  4. Toss well and then put the potatoes onto a sheet tray and spread evenly.
  5. Roast at 400 F for 45 minutes or until the skin of the potatoes are super crispy, and you’re done!
