Seafood is rather controversial as a category of food. For some people, it’s unfathomable how anyone enjoys it, and the mere thought of seafood dishes is very unappetizing. But for many others, it’s seen as a delicacy and one of the best meal options. If the latter sounds like you, then make sure to try these seafood dishes.

Prawn Linguine

A classic comfort meal is creamy pasta, and this dish is a perfect example of that. Lovely linguine in a rich, creamy sauce with prawns is a great combination of tasty, soulful ingredients.

Paella

This hearty Spanish dish uses huge paella pans to fry rice with plenty of flavoring and traditionally with chicken, prawns, and mussels. The savory, spiced rice makes for the perfect base for these tasty proteins.

Seafood Ramen

This is a great way to enjoy seafood, as the subtle but wonderful flavors of the ramen allow the seafood to take center stage. Often you’ll find this dish with mussels, squid, and shrimp as well as plenty of fresh greens.

Calamari

The only thing better than seafood is deep-fried seafood. Calamari is deep-fried squid rings, which have the most amazing taste and texture. Perfect dipped in aioli and served with fries and a fresh green salad.

Mollusks, cephalopods, and crustaceans are considered to be some of the finest delicacies on the menu. If you don’t know what we’re on about, you may recognize them better as mussels, calamari, prawns, and lobster. Seafood, as long as it’s fresh, is definitely worth ordering, or even making at home as long as you bear these tips in mind.

Lobster

Cooking lobster can be intimidating. The key is not to overcook it. If you open the lobster and the claw is half the size of the shell, the crustacean has been overcooked. To prevent that travesty, cook a pound and a quarter of lobster that is fresh from the sea for 13-18 minutes— and no longer.

Clams

Clams need to be extremely fresh when bought as the contrary can leave you with a nasty bout of shellfish poisoning. When buying raw clams, make sure their shells are tightly shut and do not have any cracks. Keep them icy cold before cooking, but do not freeze them.

Mussels

Want an elegant way to eat mussels? The mollusk provides everything you need. Use the shell like a spoon to scoop out the flesh from the other mussels and eat them. Far more dignified than using your hands, and no clean-up!

Have you just bought a filet of salmon and you aren’t quite sure what the best method for preparing it is? While salmon might seem like an intimidating fish to cook, there’s no need to worry because there are plenty of preparations that make this fish taste great.

Here are the three best ways to prepare salmon.

Pan-frying

Pan-frying salmon is one of my favorite ways to prepare a filet of this fish. I recommend adding a little bit of olive oil to a cast-iron pan, during your stove on medium heat, and cooking the fish until it is thoroughly done on both sides and in the middle, about 7-8 minutes total.

Baking

Baking is another easy way to prepare salmon, requiring very little effort and time. Depending on the size of your fillet, only about 8-10 minutes in an oven that has been pre-heated to 400 degrees Fahrenheit should do the trick.

Grilling

Are you lucky enough to own a grill? This is a great way to prepare salmon in a unique and exciting way. A charcoal grill can be a great solution, but if you have hickory chips or mesquite chips, this is a great way to leave the wood’s character on the salmon’s flavor.

Have you ever heard of lamprey before? Older than the dinosaurs, this prehistoric-looking parasite which inhabits the oceans and freshwater rivers in countries throughout the world is actually a local delicacy in certain places.

Lamprey has actually been considered a delicacy for thousands of years, beginning with the ancient Romans whose emperors seeked out this jawless fish to make dinners for special celebrations.

Love for this scary-looking creature continued into the Middle Ages. In fact, King Henry I of England was reported to have been so fond of the taste of lampreys that he over-indulged while eating them and died as a result of his excess in 1135!

Even in current times, lamprey continues to be a beloved and expensive delicacy. Southwestern Europe, including the countries of France, Spain, and Portugal, remain places where lampreys are still caught by fishermen in the peak season from February to April, and sold as a delicacy.

The most common preparation for the lamprey is the Bordelaise style, which includes taking the animal’s blood and combining it with red wine, garlic, and other spices to make a rich sauce. This is then served with rice.

While it might seem like a stomach-churning specialty, lamprey is a meaty and delicious fish whose special sauce turns it into one of the most unforgettable meals that you will ever experience. Would you try it?

In recent years, a dish called ceviche has become one of the trendiest seafood options around. This citrusy, light, and refreshing dish originated in Central and South America but has now spread to become popular in many places throughout the world.

If you are looking to travel to try ceviche and the different types of this seafood treat that exist, here are three countries that you absolutely must stop in.

Mexico

In Mexico, typical ingredients from this country’s gastronomy rule the roost when it comes to ceviche. In addition to seafood ingredients like shrimp, octopus, and squid, you’ll also find salt, lime, onion, chiles, and avocado in Mexican ceviche. It’s most popular in coastal areas of the country.

Peru

Peru is arguably the birthplace of ceviche, and this country’s version of the dish is one of the most classic and beloved. Sea bass, the basis for Peruvian ceviche, is marinated in lime juice for hours before being combined with onions, chiles, salt, and pepper in this country’s version of the dish.

Ecuador

When it comes to ceviche in Ecuador, you will find two main ingredients: shrimp and tomato. This tangy dish also contains coconut milk and lime juice, and in contrast to many countries’ versions of ceviche, the shrimp included in Ecuador’s version is typically cooked.

If there’s one country on Earth that foodie travelers flock to in order to try some of the world’s best seafood, it has to be Japan.

Featuring the best sushi on Earth and some of the most unique and exquisitely-prepared seafood dishes that you can find anywhere, Japan is a seafood foodie paradise. But would you be brave enough to try two of its truly unique dishes?

The Land of the Rising Sun has two well-known dishes that are eaten alive. Check them out, and let us know if you’d be able to stomach them!

Ikizukukri

Ikizukuri, which means “eaten alive” in Japanese, is a preparation of sashimi which involves eating the fish while it is still alive. Chefs are only allowed to make minimal cuts to produce this dish in order to ensure that the animal is still alive while being eaten. The head is left attached so that diners can see the gills move. It certainly isn’t for the weak of heart.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BnrzCgPhPta/

Odori Ebi

Odori Ebi is a shrimp dish that is served to diners while the crustacean is still alive. It’s typically dipped in sake before being eaten so as to incapacitate and intoxicate it. Diners are advised to eat this dish quickly so that the animals do not suffer unnecessarily. Would you try this crazy Japanese delicacy?
