]]>While many southern dishes are now popular throughout the country, there are some that might seem just downright strange to outsiders. So, here’s a look at four of the South’s weirdest dishes.
Chitlins are made with pig intestines. That’s right, intestines. This soul food classic involves either boiling or stewing the intestines for hours until they become soft and palatable. Don’t knock it until you try it!
Alligators are fearsome reptiles that live in the swamps in parts of the American South such as Florida, Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi. The reptile’s tail, believe it or not, is delicious when deep-fried.
Peanuts were first cultivated in the Southern region of the United States and are now enjoyed roasted, raw, and in peanut butter. Did you know that it’s also common in parts of the south to boil them in salt water? They’re mushy but are actually pretty tasty.
Alligators aren’t the only reptiles that southerners consume. While this culinary tradition isn’t confined to the South, eating fried frogs legs is certainly more popular there than anywhere else. Would you be brave enough to try them?

]]>While eating insects might have just recently become a trend in most Western societies, the reality is that it’s been a popular thing to do in many cultures. Here are some edible bugs from around the world that you should try, if you’re brave enough.
This Mexican snack is popular during the summertime in this Latin American country. Grasshoppers are collected and toasted on top of a griddle before being sprinkled with lime juice, chili pepper, and garlic. Yum!
Fried spiders are consumed as a delicacy in the Southeast Asian country of Cambodia. Big tarantulas are grown in the forest and then fried in oil with garlic until crispy and runny on the inside. It tastes better than it sounds, trust me.
Now, this insect food is a little bit newer and less traditional than the two previous ones. Lately, companies and restaurants have begun experimenting with mealworm burgers as an alternative to beef patties. They’re said to be tasty, but you might have to wait a while until they become a staple item.

]]>While we might typically associate Haribo with gummy bears, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t some truly weird flavors floating around out there. Here are some of the strangest Haribo flavors available worldwide.
Sour candy isn’t often made to look like neon-colored spaghetti, but Haribo has done it. With strawberry, blue raspberry, and apple flavors in the package, we wouldn’t recommend putting tomato sauce on these.
Candy isn’t supposed to give you nightmares, but Haribo Teeth, which are available in the Spanish and Turkish markets, might come close to doing so. These gummy teeth might taste good, but they’re downright freaky.
Available in both gummy and sour versions, Haribo gives people around the world to bite off Papa Smurf’s head with these strange candies.
These weird treats are similar to the first entry on the list, but with the shape and thickness of classic french fries. We’re not sure why they had to choose this name, but we guess creativity is the name of the game for this eclectic company.

]]>Did you know, however, that cheesecake doesn’t even have to be sweet or a dessert?
Savory cheesecake is a fascinating twist on what most of us think of when we hear the word “cheesecake.” When you think about it, it makes a ton of sense to combine savory ingredients with a cheesecake base.
And trust us, it can be absolutely delicious.
Instead of adding additional sugar to the cheesecake filling, savory cheesecakes either opt for a sugarless option or even to use a more savory filling such as blue cheese or feta.
Then, for the crust, you’ll want to use a salty and savory cracker such as crumbled Ritz. Then, by following the rest of the steps of making a normal cheesecake, you can make your own savory cheesecake.
This base allows for tons of possible additions, including vegetables, caramelized onions, and even chicken! If you are looking for a truly unique appetizer option or for a dish that’s sure to wow at a party.

]]>Most of us are familiar with the normal Starbucks items that you can get at most shops, but did you know that Starbucks offers some truly strange drinks around the world? Here are the four weirdest.
In Latin America, this sweet and cinnamony frozen drink is beloved as a twist on a classic. It’s high in sugar, but absolutely delicious.
A Canadian classic finds its way into the Starbucks menu in certain parts of the year in Quebec locations. The syrup is extracted from trees in Canada and is blended into this coffee-based delight.
Pannetone is an Italian fruit and nut cake that’s available during the Christmas season. In Australia and Asia, it is made into a latte drink that is available at Starbucks locations.
Only available in Peru, this fruity Frappuccino incorporates lucuma, a traditional Amazonian fruit that has a custardy texture. Some say it tastes like a combination between mangoes and pineapples.

]]>As one of the most popular countries in the world for tourists, lots of people have been lucky enough to try some of this country’s weird and wonderful food offerings.
One that has always stuck in my mind after visiting Spain is chorizo al infierno, which literally translates to “hell chorizo.”
Chorizo is a type of Spanish sausage that’s made with pork meat and paprika. Cased in animal intestines, it’s known for its delicious, smoky flavor. Normally, it’s served dried or cut into small slices, but chorizo al infierno is totally different.
The preparation of this Spanish classic is performance art. When you’re served this dish, you might wonder why there’s a piece of uncooked, impaled chorizo on a metal rod on top of a plate of clear liquid on your table.
What you’ll see, though, is that your waiter or waitress is going to ignite this clear liquid (a high-grade alcohol that is impossible to drink) and use its flame to cook your chorizo.
After sitting above the ignited alcohol for a few minutes, your chorizo will be crispy and ready to eat. It’s a show and a delicious treat all in one!

The Texas Rangers offer a two-pound chicken tender known as the “fowl pole” at their home games. It includes a variety of dipping sauces and fries, as if that was necessary.
New England is famous for its lobster, so of course the Red Sox sell this twist on a traditional BLT, filled with delicious and tender lobster meat.
Chicken and waffles is a Southern tradition, but curiously, it can be found in Minnesota at Twins home games. It’s a fried chicken breast, drizzled in maple syrup, served with a waffle wrapped around it.

]]>The post Would You Try Fried Grasshoppers? appeared first on falafelandcaviar.com.
]]>This dish is called chapulines in Spanish, and while it might turn the stomach of an outsider, they are beloved as a delicious snack in many parts of this region!
Chapulines are only consumed in the summer, from early May to September or October. This is when grasshoppers hatch and are freshest to eat.
After they hatch, they are then cleaned and prepared to be cooked.
Chapulines are typically prepared by being toasted on a griddle that is similar to a normal frying pan. They are normally seasoned with sour and spicy ingredients such as fresh-squeezed lime juice, garlic, and salt. Sometimes, if people are looking for a little bit of a kick, they are even seasoned with spicy red chili peppers.
So, what do they taste like?
Even though eating bugs can sound a bit off-putting, most people that try chapulines end up loving them. They are crunchy, sour, and/or spicy depending on what is used to season them. They’re also healthy, low in fat, and a great source of protein!
Would you be brave enough to try chapulines? I guarantee that you won’t regret it!

We’re all certainly familiar with the normal green cucumber, but did you know that there’s a weird sea culture called the sea cucumber that’s also eaten?
Despite being somewhat rubbery, it’s considered a delicacy in East Asia.
This huge saltwater clam has nothing to do with the bird!
This clam, native to the Pacific Northwest of the United States, demands high prices at top restaurant. Despite its strange appearance, chefs love it for its delicious taste.
