Pickles can be a great source of fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants, but they also come with a long list of unhealthy properties we often ignore. Their high sodium content is their biggest drawback, but there are ways to combat this issue and make sure your pickles are as healthy as it gets, starting with these five.

Check Food Labels

Checking food labels is one of the best ways to ensure that the food you’re eating is healthy, and this rule also applies to pickles. Remember to check the nutrition label whenever you’re buying them to make sure that the sodium content isn’t too high.

Look for Fermented Pickles

You should also look for fermented pickles whenever possible because they’re a good source of probiotics and can do wonders for your gut health.

Moderation is Key

Eating pickles in moderation is also a good idea because it can help you keep your sodium intake under control.

Perfect Balance

Instead of eating pickles on their own, you can always try adding them to your salads and serving them with other healthy foods to balance out their unhealthy properties.

Make Your Own

Making homemade pickles is always an option because you’ll be in control of the ingredients being used and make sure they’re not packed with sodium.

Many people turn to salads when trying to put a healthy twist on their diet, but the ingredients you use can make or break this dish. If you have a habit of loading your salad with a bunch of toppings, it might be time to change your ways because many of them aren’t that healthy, starting with these five.

Pasta

Pasta salads experienced a true boom in recent years. Despite being pretty delicious, keep in mind they’re usually packed with empty calories and carbs.

Creamy Dressings

Creamy salad dressings, such as ranch and Caesar, also won’t do your salad any good since they contain a significant amount of unhealthy fats and added sugars.

Croutons

Croutons can turn your salad into a crunchy delight, but they’re packed with so much salt that they’re just not worth it. Nuts and seeds can have the same effect, while also being a much healthier alternative.

Cheese

High-fat cheeses like cheddar or blue cheese are a common salad topping, but it’s best to eat them in moderation because they can up your salad’s fat and calorie content.

Fried Foods

Bacon bits and crispy chicken strips can do wonders for the flavor of your salad, but keep in mind they’re usually deep-fried and packed with unhealthy fats.

Peanut butter is one of the most delicious spreads on the market, and if you still haven’t found your favorite brand – now’s the time! With countless options to choose from, it’s easy to get overwhelmed, so we’re here to help you pick the healthiest and tastiest peanut butter possible.

Check the Label

Peanut butter often gets a bad rap because it’s packed with calories, sugar, and sodium, but it can also be a great source of protein and unsaturated fats. It all comes down to finding the right balance, so it’s a good idea to check the label before buying peanut butter and opt for one with added protein and fiber and lower calorie count.

Crunchy vs. Creamy

There’s not much difference between crunchy and creamy peanut butter when it comes to their nutritional value. It all comes down to your personal preference, so go with the texture that suits your taste.

Make Your Own

Making your own peanut butter is also an option because you’ll be in control of all the ingredients being used. If you’re struggling to find a brand that ticks all the boxes in terms of flavor and nutritional value, it’s time to come up with your own go-to peanut butter recipe.

More people are trying to embrace a vegan lifestyle as the years go by, and the major fast-food chains are keeping up with this trend. You can find plant-based options at pretty much every fast-food franchise these days, and we’re here to help you decide if eating them is a good idea.

Cooking Process

Despite containing plant-based ingredients, vegan fast foods usually aren’t that healthy because the cooking process still involves deep-frying, thus upping their calorie, fat, and sodium content.

Cross-Contamination

Cross-contamination is one of the biggest problems concerning vegan fast food. Unless it’s prepared separately from other foods, it’s highly likely it will come into contact with non-vegan ingredients.

Limited Offering

Fast-food restaurants are still new players in the plant-based game. You won’t have too many vegan options to choose from, so it’s best to go to restaurants that specialize in authentic plant-based cuisine.

Animal Cruelty

If you’re “vegan for the animals,” you might want to avoid vegan fast food for ethical reasons. Despite offering plant-based options, major fast-food chains still significantly contribute to animal cruelty.

Sending Good Message

Vegan fast food might have its downsides, but it’s not all that bad. Its rising popularity may inspire fast-food restaurants to offer more vegan options and introduce better practices during the preparation process.

As the summer season begins to wind down, it’s time to savor the flavors that are best enjoyed during these warm months. Today, we’re talking about three seasonal veggies you should be bringing to your table before the autumn chill sets in. Ready? It’s a taste of the sun in every bite.

Zucchini

Zucchini is incredibly versatile and at its best in the late summer. Whether grilled, roasted, or spiralized, this vegetable is a wonderful addition to any meal. Try making zucchini fritters, adding it to pasta dishes, or stuffing it with a flavorful mixture of cheese, herbs, and other veggies.

Corn

Sweet corn is a quintessential summer vegetable, perfect for grilling, boiling, or incorporating into salads and salsas. Enjoy it off the cob in a fresh corn salad with tomatoes, cucumber, and a lime vinaigrette. Or try grilling whole cobs to serve with butter and a sprinkle of salt.

Tomatoes

Nothing compares to the taste of fresh, ripe tomatoes in the summer. From juicy cherry tomatoes to hearty beefsteaks, each variety offers something special. Make a classic Caprese salad with fresh mozzarella and basil, or cook down into a rich, flavorful tomato sauce that can be frozen and enjoyed later.

Turmeric, a vibrant yellow spice, is celebrated for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It’s great for recovery, or if you just want to feel your healthiest self. Here are three wonderful ways to incorporate turmeric into your meals, enhancing both flavor and health benefits.

Golden Milk Latte

Start your day with a warm and soothing Golden Milk Latte. This traditional Ayurvedic beverage combines turmeric with milk (or a dairy-free alternative), a dash of black pepper to enhance absorption, and a hint of honey for sweetness. Simply heat the milk, whisk in a teaspoon of turmeric, and a pinch of black pepper, and sweeten to taste. This comforting drink is not only delicious but also a great way to boost your immune system and reduce inflammation.

Turmeric Rice

Elevate your regular rice dish with the addition of turmeric. Add a teaspoon of turmeric powder to the water when cooking your rice. This simple step infuses the rice with a beautiful golden hue and a subtle earthy flavor. For extra flair, toss in some sautéed onions, garlic, and a handful of peas or nuts. Turmeric rice pairs perfectly with curries, grilled meats, or roasted vegetables, adding both visual appeal and nutritional benefits to your meal.

Turmeric Roasted Vegetables

Transform your roasted vegetables with a turmeric twist. Toss your choice of vegetables—such as carrots, cauliflower, and potatoes—in olive oil, a teaspoon of turmeric, salt, and pepper. Spread them on a baking sheet and roast at 400°F (200°C) for 25-30 minutes, until tender and golden. The turmeric not only enhances the flavor but also adds a nutritional punch, making this side dish a delightful and healthful addition to any meal.

Salad Niçoise is a classic French salad originating from the city of Nice. This vibrant dish combines fresh vegetables, tender tuna, creamy potatoes, and briny olives, all tossed in a tangy vinaigrette. Here’s how to whip up this delicious salad at home.

Ingredients:

  • 8 ounces of baby potatoes
  • 4 large eggs
  • 6 ounces of green beans
  • 2 cans of tuna
  • 1 cup of cherry tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup of Kalamata olives
  • 4 cups of mixed salad greens
  • 1/4 cup of extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. In a pot of salted boiling water, cook the baby potatoes until tender, about 10-12 minutes. Drain and set aside to cool.
  2. Meanwhile, place the eggs in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, remove from heat, cover, and let the eggs sit in the hot water for 10 minutes. Then, transfer the eggs to a bowl of ice water to cool. Once cooled, peel and slice the eggs into quarters.
  3. In the same pot of boiling water used for the potatoes, blanch the green beans for 2-3 minutes, until crisp-tender. Drain and immediately transfer to a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process. Drain again and pat dry with paper towels.
  4. Arrange the mixed salad greens on a large platter or individual serving plates. Arrange the cooked potatoes, sliced hard-boiled eggs, blanched green beans, cherry tomatoes, tuna, and Kalamata olives on top.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together the extra virgin olive oil, red wine vinegar, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper to make the vinaigrette. Drizzle the vinaigrette over the Salad Niçoise and sprinkle with chopped fresh parsley for garnish.
  6. Serve immediately and enjoy this delightful and refreshing Salad Niçoise as a light meal or side dish.

Juice cleanses have gained popularity as a quick fix for weight loss and detoxifying the body. However, amidst the buzz, there are also concerns raised by experts regarding their safety and effectiveness. So, what are the potential benefits, and what risks are involved? Let’s get juicy.

Potential Benefits

Fruit and vegetable juices are packed with essential nutrients, making them a valuable addition to a balanced diet. Juice cleanse advocates argue that consuming only juices for a set period can help cleanse the body and yield various health benefits such as improved digestion, increased energy levels, and weight loss. However, while anecdotal evidence points to desired outcomes for some, research on the positive impact of juice cleanses remains limited.

Health Risks

Despite the perceived benefits, juice cleanses come with inherent risks. Consuming only liquid for an extended period can lead to nutritional deficiencies, particularly in essential nutrients like protein and fiber. Long-term juice cleanses have also been linked to serious health complications and eating disorders. Additionally, there is concern among experts regarding the impact of juice cleanses on kidney function.

The Bottom Line

While juice cleanses may offer short-term benefits, they are not without risks. The lack of scientific evidence supporting their effectiveness, coupled with potential health hazards, raises questions about their overall safety. Before embarking on a juice cleanse, it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional. One thing’s for sure: A balanced diet, rich in whole foods, remains the preferred recommendation for optimal wellness and long-term weight loss.

Struggling with acid reflux can be extremely uncomfortable, but with the right dietary choices, finding relief is possible! Incorporating low-acid foods into your meals can help prevent heartburn and promote digestive health. Let’s explore some delicious options that are also gentle on the stomach.

Bananas

Bananas stand out among fruits for their low acidity, making them an ideal snack. If you’re on the go or just craving a quick bite at home, this potassium-rich fruit is a great option.

Green Vegetables

Green veggies like broccoli, asparagus, and celery boast minimal acidity levels. Adding these fresh greens to your plate will be tasty, nourishing, and heartburn-friendly.

Fish

Opt for baked, grilled, or poached fish (but make sure to steer clear of frying and fatty sauces). Fish offer various flavorful options while providing essential omega-3 fatty acids for heart and digestive health.

Oatmeal

A bowl of oatmeal is a nourishing, comforting meal option that won’t trigger reflux. Packed with tons of fiber, it keeps you feeling full and satisfied, minus any stomach discomfort.

Lean Poultry

Lean cuts of chicken and turkey (without the skin) are great options if you grill, bake, or steam them. Poultry is a solid protein source that doesn’t exacerbate acid reflux symptoms.
