If you have ever gone out to eat at a Vietnamese restaurant, you may have noticed something curious called “Vietnamese coffee” on the drink menu.

Vietnamese coffee is a beloved drink that comes from Southeast Asia and is widely regarded as one of the most delicious and interesting ways to enjoy coffee on the planet.

So, what is Vietnamese coffee, and what makes it special?

French priests introduced the coffee plant to the country in the mid-19th century, and Vietnam quickly became a giant of the production of the robusta form of coffee, which is stronger and more bitter than the more widely-consumed arabica variety.

In order to combat the bitter and strong taste of the country’s coffee, a fantastic creation was made.

The coffee, which is always brewed through a small, manual drip filter, is combined with sweetened and condensed milk in order to make a sweet and strong beverage. Sweetened condensed milk is the natural choice in Vietnam because of the difficulty of finding fresh milk, and it just happens to work out perfectly based on the characteristics of the region’s coffee.

The drink is either enjoyed hot or immediately poured into a glass with ice in order to drink while cold. Doesn’t it sound delicious?

Snails: you either love them, or you hate them. In many countries around the world, the mere thought of eating these slimy creatures turns the stomach of most diners.

However, in some countries, these gastropods are one of the most popular fine dining options out there. Here are three countries where snails are popular and enjoyed as a delicacy.

France

The French know sails as escargot, and they are a favorite throughout the country. The French are known worldwide for their love of snails. They are often served with a light butter sauce that includes parsley and other herbs.

Indonesia

The Indonesian style of eating snails is one of the most unique that you’ll find anywhere. After being extracted from their shells, snails are placed onto a wooden skewer and cooked over a fire, satay style.

Spain

Spain, France’s southern neighbor, is also pretty big into snails. Here, you’ll find them as a popular tapas bar item in cities such as Sevilla, and also as a hearty main course featuring tomato sauce and chorizo in northern regions such as Navarre.

Doner kebab is one of the most popular late-night and snack foods on Earth. This meaty treat is now found from New York to Nairobi and has put meat cylinders on the map as a source of some of the most delectable meat that you will find.

However, are you aware of the origins of doner kebab and what exactly it is?

Doner kebab hails from the country of Turkey, where it began to grow as a popular food. The name of the dish literally means “meat on a grill that spins,” which refers to the rotisserie method of cooking doner meat.

The meat, which is typically either lamb or chicken, is left to roast on the grill for hours until being shaved off into thin slices. This is a hallmark of doner kebab, seeing the stand worker strip the meat into paper-thin pieces to be served.

Doner kebab is usually eaten inside of either a wrap (none as durum) or a pita to be enjoyed. In typical preparations, it is served inside of the bread element with vegetables such as lettuce and tomatoes, and also with sauces.

The traditional sauces served with doner kebabs include garlic yogurt sauce and a spicy red chili sauce that add a succulent flavor element to the food.

Now that you know everything about doner kebabs, go out and try one! You’ll be sure to love it.

It’s almost time for Oktoberfest, one of Germany’s favorite traditions! This festival, which combines food and copious amounts of beer, is best enjoyed in the city of Munich, in the Bavaria region of Germany.

Sausages are the most popular food at the festival, but not all German sausages are created alike. Here are a few different sausages that you have to try if you find yourself at an Oktoberfest celebration.

Weisswurst

This sausage comes from Bavaria, the traditional home of Oktoberfest. It’s made from veal and pork, and is distinguished by its characteristic white color. It’s mild and not overwhelming.

Bockwurst

What’s more appropriate for Oktoberfest than a sausage flavored with beer? Bockwurst’s secret ingredient is the bock beer that gives it a rich, unique flavor.

Knackwurst

Ever seen a short, stumpy sausage that smelled strongly of garlic? It was probably knackwurst. Originating in Hamburg in the north of the country, this sausage isn’t for the faint of heart.

Bratwurst

If there’s any specific type of German sausage you’ve heard of, it’s probably this one. It’s usually pan-fried or roasted, but can even be simmered in beer to give it a special Oktoberfest touch!

If you’re under the age of 65 and you’ve never heard of the term “aspic,” that’s okay. This 20th-century food trend is truly one of the most bizarre popular things that people used to serve at their dinner tables.

Even if it wasn’t the most appetizing dish, it’s still interesting to take a look back at aspic, what it was, and how it was served on plates throughout the world until it gradually lost popularity. So, let’s learn about aspic!

What is aspic?

Aspic, at its essence, can be resumed in two words: savory gelatin. Back in the 20th century, with the advent of instant gelatins, it became popular to get creative with the invention and not only use it to make the fruit gelatins that we are all now familiar with.

A post shared by La magia della tavola (@lamagiadellatavola) on

So, people began to use liquids like consomme and chicken stock as the liquid used as the base for the gelatin to obtain…interesting results.

What types of foods were served in aspic?

Many types of food were added into aspic bases, including pork, vegetables, and even seafood. At one point, it was actually quite popular to make a shrimp aspic that combined a little bit of citrus inside of the gelatin.

It even remains popular in some countries, such as Moldova and Romania, to eat a dish called “pork jelly,” which combines aspic with pork trotters to make a one-of-a-kind dish.

So, what do you think? Are you brave enough to try a dish with aspic in it?

After starting off in Spain, “tapas” have become a huge food trend in recent years. This trend is now extending throughout different countries around the world.

So, what are “tapas,” exactly?

Tapas are small plates of food that are served with drinks as part of a meal. This tradition started in the southern European country, one of the world’s gastronomic hotspots and a place where doing things in a communal fashion is the norm.

When going out to eat tapas, diners usually order drinks like beer, wine, or sangria, and then a variety of small plates of food — the tapas.

The name “tapas” comes from the Spanish word for “covering,” because these small plates were originally served on top of drink glasses to keep bugs and other small insects from being tempted to fly into the drink.

A group at a dinner usually orders a variety of different foods as tapas, and then everyone shares and gets a bite or two from every plate. It’s common to order different dishes, such as one with fish, one with beef, one with pork, and a couple veggie-based dishes for a little variety.

This tradition and dining style encourages conversation and a communal dining experience, and you can try a little bit of everything.

Going out for tapas is the perfect way to spend an evening with friends or family and enjoy a variety of delicious little plates of food.
