Keeping our fingers and toenails strong and healthy is an often-overlooked part of our health routines. But if you usually work with your hands, are on your feet a lot, or if you enjoy nail art and getting manicures, then it’s important to keep nail health in mind. One way to do this is through diet and nutrition, making sure you get the right vitamins for your nails. Here are a few foods to help.

Protein

Your nails are themselves made of protein, so eating lots of healthy, lean protein is really good for them just the way it’s good for strong bones. Clean, low-fat protein like chicken, fish, and legumes is particularly good for your nails.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C helps your body produce collagen, which strengthens and smooths hair, skin, and nails. For lots of vitamin C, you can eat several fruits and veggies such as strawberries, oranges, kiwi, tomatoes, and bell peppers.

Eggs

Eggs have a host of nutrients that are beneficial to nail health as well as general health. Aside from protein, they also contain vitamin A, vitamin E, biotin (which promotes nail thickness and prevents splitting), B12, and are an amazing source of vitamin D in particular. All these nutrients work in harmony to give you strong, smooth nails.

You’ve just purchased a beautiful piece of salmon and put it proudly on the grill, but wait, what is that white substance that is starting to ooze out of your fillet? That white stuff is called albumin. The good news is it is completely harmless. But what exactly is it and why is it there?

Understanding It

Albumin is a type of protein. It’s not fat like many people mistakenly assume that exists in the dish in liquid form when it’s raw. It pushes to the surface of the salmon when you heat it. Once this protein reaches a temperature between 140 and 150 degrees, the coagulated albumin gets squeezed out and appears in the form of the strange white substance that you are probably familiar with.

The amount of albumin in a salmon fillet doesn’t seem to be, and sometimes you’ll end up with a piece that’s covered in it and sometimes hardly any if it will appear. This actually has nothing to do with the type of salmon you’re cooking, but rather with how you’re cooking it. The more aggressively you cook it, the more albumin will appear on its surface. The higher the heat, the more quickly the flesh contracts, and the more albumin will become visible.

Canned soup is the go-to option for so many people who need a hot meal that only takes reheating to make. However, unless you’re very sick and can’t manage to make your own soup, you should really move away from eating canned soup. Though there are many options, including organic and seemingly healthy ones, the fact of the matter is that all canned soups are totally loaded with sodium, which is really bad news.

Sodium is the amount of salt that is in food, and when you have too much, you can have all sorts of health problems like high blood pressure, heart disease, and more. Most preserved things have salt, but can soup is one of the worst victims. If you look at a soup label, you might see the one serving, which can often be only half the can, provides you with anywhere from 20-40% of your daily sodium intake in such a small amount of food.

Instead, if you really want to eat canned soup, definitely dilute the soup with water so the portion goes farther, and the salt gets diluted. Or, the healthiest way is to make your own soup which really doesn’t require much work at all, and you can be in control of how much sodium you consume.

A lot of talk has been going around recently about an alkaline diet that is said to help you become healthier and prevent you from getting certain diseases and illnesses.

While that’s not medically backed, there is a lot of research about eating a diet that contains many alkaline-heavy foods. Alkaline foods are anything that registers over a 7 on the pH scale, where anything under a 7 is acidic. Since our diets in the western world are usually more acidic than alkaline, it really can benefit your health.

People think that simply eating more vegetables and fruit is enough, which is great, but if you want to get into the pH level of some common produce, you’ll see that many fan-favorites are very acidic. Anything from berries to tomatoes are pretty acidic, and while good in moderation, over time it can be hard on your digestion and your kidneys. Also, many processed foods including meat and cheese are acidic, which definitely can take a toll on your health.

To balance out these healthy but acidic foods, add more alkaline foods to your diet to keep everything even. Some of the best alkaline-rich foods include things like spinach and other leafy greens, celery, bell peppers, avocado, and more. So vary your diet and try to add some more alkaline foods on your plate.

Bread is perceived as unhealthy, but the truth is there are so many types that are really good for you!

Anything Sprouted

Sprouted bread has become a popular food in the last few years, and if you see any label for sprouted whole grain bread, no matter what type of bread it is, you can feel good knowing it’s going to be healthy. Sprouted bread just means it’s made up of grains that have literally sprouted after being exposed to heat, and through that process, more nutrients become available for us to digest.

Sourdough

Sourdough is one of the oldest breads known to man and goes through a process of fermentation to create it, which creates in the process and probiotics which are excellent for digestion. Sourdough is also really low on the glycemic index, which means that it will keep you full for longer by helping you maintain your blood sugar.

Rye

Rye bread of any kind is always a great option because rye naturally is more nutritious than wheat. However, if you really want to go for the healthiest option, look for varieties that have been sprouted, have caraway seeds, and anything that is traditionally made meaning there is no wheat flour in it.

You’ve noticed that salty foods make you thirsty, but have you ever wondered why that happens? Salt is one of the most common and the oldest seasonings and saltiness is one of the basic tastes we have as humans. And while salt is essential for life, too much of it can be bad for your health and wellbeing.

When you intake salt, it becomes absorbed into your bloodstream and your blood becomes saltier, making the fluids outside of your cells saltiers than those inside the cells. As you’ve probably heard somewhere before, “salt attracts water,” and this is literally what happens – it pulls water out of your cells like a magnet. The cells work hard to hold in the water and they send a message to your brain, letting it know what’s happening.

Your brain understands that your blood saltiness levels are off and it triggers the alarm that tells you you need to drink water in order to dilute the salt. This is thirst.

Your kidneys are another important factor in regulating blood saltines levels. They help dilute the salt by not letting you lose any more water than necessary, meaning they slow down urine production. The balancing of salt and water is, therefore, directly related to the amount of water you have in your blood and cells, which controls your blood pressure.

Most people say if you want to be healthier, swap out white rice for brown. But, is that really true? If you are a rice lover and are contemplating switching from white to brown, consider these facts before you do.

Nutritional Values

When it comes to calories there are only very slight differences between the two kinds of rice. Brown rice has about 110 calories per 100 grams of rice, while white rice has a bit more, about 130. The difference between the two when it comes to fiber is that brown rice has 2 grams of fiber while white rice only has 0.5g. This is because white rice is stripped and processed more than brown rice.

Glycemic Index

The glycemic index tells us how long the sugars and carbs in food will keep us going, but again, there isn’t that big of a difference. When it comes to carbs, white rice has 27 grams and brown rice has slightly less at 23g. This makes white rice higher on the index and therefore won’t give you long-lasting energy, but brown rice is only slighter lower by 10 or 20 points.

Both rices really aren’t all that different, but technically brown rice is slightly better for you. If you’re really into swapping out foods for healthier alternatives, the best option is to actually pick a different grain that will give you fewer carbs and more energy throughout your day.

When it comes to condiments, there are some that are better than others in terms of health. If you want to know what’s really in your pantry and fridge, check out this list.

Mustard

By far, mustard is the healthiest condiment you probably have in your pantry. There are almost no calories in it because basically, it’s just mustard seeds ground up with liquids like water and vinegar. Because of that, mustard can actually be pretty healthy for you, especially good quality mustard.

Hot Sauce

Another vinegar-based condiment, hot sauce is an excellent choice if you want to add flavor to your food without adding unhealthy ingredients. The only thing about hot sauce is that there is sometimes a lot of salt, but overall, you can’t go too wrong with hot sauce.

Ranch

Ranch is delicious, but definitely not a healthy ingredient to have at your cookout. Because it’s made with buttermilk, which has a lot of cholesterol and fat, you really should use it with moderation.

Mayonaise

Unfortunately, mayo is one of the most unhealthy things to have in your fridge. One tablespoon has almost 100 calories, which is really a lot when you think about how much mayo you probably use in your cooking.

If you’ve ever heard the phrase your food looks like the part of the body is helps most, it’s actually true! A lot of foods happen to resemble the places of the body their nutrients help out the most, which is so cool!

Eyes

When you slice a carrot into a round, you might realize it looks like an eye! That’s no coincidence since carrots are notoriously good for your eyes. This is because they have vitamin A in them, which is great for keeping your eyes healthy and working at their best.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BRKIFb4B_fJ/

Bones

Celery stalks are nice and long, just like your bones! To make sure your bones are in tip-top shape, celery is the vegetable for you. The reason why celery is so good for your bones is because they contain silicon, which makes up your bone structure and the reason why they get so strong!

Heart

Tomatoes are very similar in shape to the heart, and are also usually red! The reason why tomatoes are so good for your heart is because of a substance called lycopene, which when consumed reduces your risk for heart disease! Also, when you combine tomatoes with a little bit of fat, your body absorbs the lycopene even better.

Everyone knows that water is necessary for your body to function properly, but do you know how much your body actually needs water? You will feel like your best self once you start drinking enough water, and here are some ways to accomplish that.

Morning

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bu5eSqklaKv/

The first thing you should do in the morning is drink a full glass of water. This is so important, because your body is dehydrated after the long night, so to get everything working again, you need to drink water! You might find that if you drink water first thing you feel more awake and might not even need as much caffeine.

Thirst

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bulcp0GFzko/

The old saying if you’re thirsty, you’re already dehydrated, is actually true. Thirst or a cotton-feeling in your mouth is a way that your body tells you it’s craving water, so if you find that you’re often thirsty, make sure you’re drinking more throughout the day to avoid that.

Hunger

Sometimes, especially at night, it can feel like we’re hungry even after eating a large meal. Eating too close to bedtime is really not good for you and could impede your sleeping. The craziest thing is that you’re probably not hungry, you’re thirsty! Try drinking a glass of water, waiting a few minutes and see if you’re really not hungry anymore.

Morning

The first thing you should do in the morning is drink a full glass of water. This is so important, because your body is dehydrated after the long night, so to get everything working again, you need to drink water! You might find that if you drink water first thing you feel more awake and might not even need as much caffeine.

Thirst
