Peanut butter and jelly is the classic combination that we all know and love. But did you know that there are other great ingredients to combine with peanut butter?

Here are five recommendations for great additions for peanut butter sandwiches that aren’t jelly.

Banana

Peanut butter and banana pair perfectly together. The sweetness of the banana and the saltiness of the peanut butter go so well together.

Nutella

Nutella and peanut butter? Yes, please. These two nut-based spreads are a combination made in heaven.

Honey

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bu_KPBYnluQ/

If you aren’t afraid of something sweet, try a peanut butter and honey sandwich. Don’t put too much honey on the bread, however, or it might be overwhelming.

Apple

If you’ve ever tried dipping apple slices in peanut butter, you’d know how great this combination is. I recommend tart, green apples with peanut butter, to counteract the sweet saltiness of the spread.

Avocado

This combination might seem odd at first, but trust me, it really works. In addition, both peanut butter and avocado are rich in healthy, unsaturated fats that are great for heart health.

Next time you reach for strawberry or grape jelly to eat with peanut butter, think outside of the box and try something different! You’d be surprised by how many things go well with peanut butter.

Don’t knock it till you try it!

While we’re conditioned to associate peanut butter with jelly in a sweet, delicious sandwich, those who have tried different combinations claim they can be equally delicious. Peanut butter pickle sandwich may seem controversial, but it’s actually tastier than you’d think. There’s a peanut butter pickle sandwich recipe that was initially published by the New York Times in 2012 that occasionally goes viral and it happened again.

Our food-related habits can be strong so it’s no surprise that many people see this as something absolutely crazy. Those who have tried it, on the other side, claim that it’s actually good (and we’ve even seen a woman suggesting a peanut butter olive version!).

If you’re curious and love trying new tastes, this may be the perfect dish to add to your fall lunch menu. It’s great for packing up and taking to work, though you may need to explain yourself to surprised coworkers once they figure out what you’re eating!

Are you going to try peanut butter pickle sandwich or stick with PB & jelly combination just like you always did?

Sandwiches are the perfect travel food, aren’t they?

Portable, delicious, and usually brimming with typical ingredients from their places of origin, a sandwich can tell you a lot about the culture of a destination.

Here are four sandwiches from around the world that any traveler must try.

Francesinha (Portugal)

This insane Portuguese sandwich is packed chock-full with cured ham, two types of Portuguese sausages, steak, and other roast meats. It’s then covered with a tomato and beer sauce, melted cheese, and a fried egg. It’s not for the faint of heart!

Lobster Roll (New England, USA)

Lobster is commonly fished in the Atlantic waters off of the coast of New England, and you can try this lobster sandwich in states like Maine and Massachusetts. It’s light and delicious, and mayonnaise ends up combining perfectly with the crustacean’s meat.

Banh Mi (Vietnam)

Mitraillette (Belgium)

Looking for a sandwich that you can try after a night on the town? This Belgian creation has the power to soak up whatever drinks you might’ve consumed. It contains french fries, fried meat, and a savory garlic sauce. It’s intense, but delicious.

Unfortunately, it’s easy to turn to fatty ingredients like mayonnaise or butter to provide that moisture. But, by using one of these alternatives instead you can maintain a healthy diet without sacrificing taste.

Not only is avocado great in Latin-inspired dishes, but it can be just as spectacular spread on bread. Simply spread, add lime juice if you choose and you have a creamy component in no time.

Pesto

Pesto is normally only used for pasta, but actually, it is a great spread for a sandwich as well. Not only will it provides an herbaceous flavorful element to any sandwich, all the herbs and garlic in it give it a health boost as well.

Tahini

Tahini is a Middle-Eastern ground sesame paste normally used in hummus. However, this nutty spread is great for Asian inspired sandwiches, or really anything you make. A simple way to tone down the nuttiness is to add just a bit of water and lemon juice.

Hummus

Hummus is a delicious and smooth spread to add to a sandwich. On top of it’s great taste, it’s also vegan and loaded with protein.

Visitors to the country of Portugal might see the word “francesinha” highlighted on a restaurant menu and be tempted to try this plate with a funny name.

“Francesinha” literally translates as “the little frenchie,” so how extreme could it be? Maybe it’s a delicious Franco-Portuguese fusion dish or even a delicious dessert. But it certainly won’t be big.

Well, if you make these assumptions, you’re going to be dead wrong. Why? The francesinha is one of the most over-the-top and absurd sandwiches on the planet. So, what is it?

A francesinha is a sandwich that originated in the city of Porto by an immigrant that returned from France and Belgium in the 1950s. He wanted to adapt the famous croque monseuir sandwich to Portuguese tastes. And boy, did he ever.

A francesinha consists of two pieces of white bread stuffed with ham, linguica and chipolata (two types of special Portuguese sausage), steak, and roast pork. On top, the sandwich is covered with melted white cheese, and also with a rich sauce consisting mainly of tomato and beer. Finally, the last addition on most francesinha is a fried egg on top to complete the insanity.

Paninis are a type of Italian sandwich that are toasted on both sides and compressed to make a piping hot creation of melted cheese, meat, veggies, and toasted bread.

While originating in Italy and typically consisting of Italian-inspired fillings, the same idea can be used to make a type of Mexican panini that fuses ingredients from Italy and Mexico.

It’s perfect with a bowl of tomato soup or chili on a brisk winter day. So, how can you make this tasty fusion sandwich?

Ingredients

  • 2 slices of focaccia bread
  • 3 ounces of ground spicy Mexican chorizo
  • 2 tomato slices
  • 1 slice of mozzarella cheese
  • Arugula

Instructions

Start off by cutting two circular slices of ripe tomato and set to the side.

Then, heat the chorizo in a sauce pan with a dab of olive oil until it is throughly cooked.

Now, fill the sandwich from bottom to top in this order: chorizo, tomato, arugula, mozzarella cheese.

Place the completed sandwich inside of a panini toaster, turn on medium heat, and wait until the focaccia bread is golden-brown and the cheese has melted.

Once the panini has finished toasting and it’s cooled down for a couple of minutes, it’s ready to eat!

Wasn’t that easy?

For the tonkatsu sauce:

  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce

For the sandwich:

  • 1/2 cup Yuzu mayonnaise or regular mayonnaise with 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 4 boneless pork loin chops, 1/2-inch thick
  • 8 white bread slices without crust
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 2 cups finely shredded green cabbage
  • vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • tonkatsu sauce

Instructions:

  • Prepare the sauce by mixing the soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, oyster sauce, honey, and ketchup.
  • Combine the pepper, 1 teaspoon salt, and flour together. In a second bowl beat the eggs. Get a third bowl and fill it with the panko.

  • In a bowl combine the mayonnaise and cabbage.
  • Start making the katsu sando sandwich by adding 1 tablespoon of tonkatsu sauce on one side of the bread slices. Add the pork chop on 4 slices bread, add 1/2 cup cabbage and finish off with the remaining bread slices.

Honey

Banh mi has become fairly popular throughout the world, but if you want to try the real thing, you’ve gotta go to Vietnam. Filled with any type of ingredients that you can imagine, it’s a must-try.

Mitraillette (Belgium)

Looking for a sandwich that you can try after a night on the town? This Belgian creation has the power to soak up whatever drinks you might’ve consumed. It contains french fries, fried meat, and a savory garlic sauce. It’s intense, but delicious.

No good sandwich is finished without a spread; it is essential to maintaining a level of moisture sandwiches desperately need.
