If you stop by a coffee shop chain for a hot cup of your favorite coffee and pick a plant-based milk option instead of dairy, know that it may contain a lot more sugar than you anticipate. According to a study done by Action on Sugar, a Queen Mary University London-based charity, vegan options may seem healthier, but since there are no labels on products, you may be getting way more sugar in your drinks than needed.

What They Learned

The charity’s research analyzed the content of sugar and calories in large-sized hot chocolates and seasonal lattes in high street coffee chains available in the U.K. Based on their findings, the worst option comes from Starbucks—their venti Signature Caramel Hot Chocolate with whipped cream and oat milk contains 758 calories and 93.8 grams of sugar!

When it comes to lattes, the one with the most sugar is Starbucks’ venti Gingerbread Latte with oat milk which contains 523 calories and 14 teaspoons of sugar. Other chains are not much better; the study found that nearly all beverages they included contain excessive amounts of sugar and the customers often had no idea about it.

Up until recently, we believed that pretty much any supermarket yogurt is a good choice. You pick it up and eat it when you feel like it or when you don’t have time to prepare anything else. But it turns out that most yogurts are packed with sugar and not as healthy as we thought.

As people started realizing this, the yogurt manufacturers started coming up with more and more kinds to offer to consumers, and now there’s an impossible choice in front of us every time we go to the grocery store. Nutrition labels on the packaging reveal that some yogurt, even the organic ones, have more sugar than a can of Coca-Cola.

According to a study published in the British Medical Journal, most yogurts (out of 900 products included in the research) contain more than 10 percent sugar. This means they have at least 4 teaspoons in 5oz yogurt packaging! 

How did this happen? While natural yogurt contains nothing but fermented milk, the companies making it wanted to increase sales so they basically made what people wanted. Yogurts today come with many different flavors and are way less healthy than we typically believe. Keep that in mind the next time you’re in a grocery store.

There are so many types of sugar, so it’s hard to keep track. These are some of the four that you’ve probably heard of, but you know nothing about.

Muscovado

Muscovado is very similar to sugar cane, with the main difference that it’s produced with minimal processing. This sugar has a darker brown color, but it is also available in several lighter hues. It is a great substitute for all other types of sugar, with the only difference that it has a much stronger taste.

Cane Sugar

As the name suggests, cane sugar is made of sugarcane. It has a slightly darker off-white color, that is more on the cream side of shades. The flavor is a bit deeper compared to the regular white sugar. The prices vary, but it can be a bit more expensive than the conventional version.

Palm Sugar

Palm trees are the source that provide this sweetener. It is one of the unrefined types of sugar which also contain beneficial vitamins.

Друзья, всем доброе предпраздничное! Спешу поделиться первой частью отзыва о продукции @vegarden.ru, с которой уже успела ознакомиться. #Сухофрукты из большой коробочки еще в планах, а вот #фруктовыечипсы разлетелись мгновенно. Все отборные, крупные. Отличная, с ярким свежим вкусом #дыня (единственное, шкурка жестковата, а так – 😋), прекрасные ананас и банан – 👌🏻, но мой фаворит – это #манго. Ну оочень и очень! 😍😍😍 Интересно только, чем присыпали кусочки (такой меелкий белый кисловатый порошочек, который деликатно оттеняет приятный вкус фрукта). There is a lot of talk about whether sugar is really bad for you. Whatever your body tells you is probably best for you, but there are a lot of different ways to get sugar that go beyond just the white stuff you buy at the grocery store. If you want different kinds of sugar in your life, here is a good list to try!

Bananas

Bananas are naturally really sweet and add a nice sweetness to a lot of different baked goods in place of sugar. You can mash it up and make it into pancake, sweeten up your oatmeal, cakes, and more!

Dates

Dried fruit is always sweeter than regular fruit, and dates are especially sweet in a really interesting way. They actually take on a caramel-like flavor, so it’s perfect to pulse them in a food processor and add them in place of caramel or brown sugar.

Honey

Although some people say honey is broken down in the same way white sugar is, the difference is that the taste is a lot richer, and it also has a ton of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, whereas white sugar doesn’t have any redeeming qualities besides sweetness.

There are so many types of sugar, so it’s hard to keep track. These are some of the four that you’ve probably heard of, but you know nothing about.

Muscovado

Muscovado is very similar to sugar cane, with the main difference that it’s produced with minimal processing. This sugar has a darker brown color, but it is also available in several lighter hues. It is a great substitute for all other types of sugar, with the only difference that it has a much stronger taste.

Cane Sugar

As the name suggests, cane sugar is made of sugarcane. It has a slightly darker off-white color, that is more on the cream side of shades. The flavor is a bit deeper compared to the regular white sugar. The prices vary, but it can be a bit more expensive than the conventional version.

Palm Sugar

Palm trees are the source that provide this sweetener. It is one of the unrefined types of sugar which also contain beneficial vitamins.

Demerara

Demerara is also less processed and contains molasses, which makes this sugar a little bit sticky. The color is a darker cream hue. When it comes to the crystals, you’ll notice that they are bigger.
