Most of us include fruit somewhere in our diet, be it a berry smoothie, lemon in our pasta, or grabbing an apple when we’re on the run. Fruits feature in so many different recipes, from sweet to savory, but did you know these unusual facts about the common food group?

An Apple a Day

Apples hold significance in many religions and cultures, but do you know how many kinds of apples there actually are? A whopping 7,500! That means that even if you ate a new one every day, it would still take over 20 years to try them all.

To-may-to, To-mah-to

There is a saying that goes, “knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit; wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad.” Although a tomato is botanically a berry due to it being a fleshy fruit with seeds on the inside that developed from a flower with one ovary, the US Supreme Court ruled it a vegetable in 1893.

A Rose by Any Other Name

Most fruits, as we know them, are actually part of other botanical families. Bananas and watermelons, for example, are technically berries, while plums, peaches, and pears are actually members of the rose family.

Tomatoes are a staple vegetable for most types of cuisines, which means you probably always have a few lying around. But when you have something lying around all the time, sometimes you don’t use all of it up before it starts getting old. Luckily, tomatoes that are too mushy to use in salads or sandwiches are PERFECT for cooked food. Here are a few stews and dishes you can make with overripe tomatoes.

Shakshuka

This middle-eastern breakfast uses stewed tomatoes, peppers, and other herbs to form an almost sauce-like base. Nestled within the stew are eggs cracked directly into the dish and cooked to the softness or hardness you choose. This dish is best enjoyed dolloped on crusty bread, with a nice cold drink on the side.

Curry

Lots of Indian-style curries like butter chicken or chana aloo with chickpeas use canned tomatoes or tomato paste as a base. But even better than from a can is fresh crushed tomato, made from the overripe ones you have lying around. You can really get creative and spice up your crushed-tomato base with whatever you have on hand for a delicious Indian-inspired curry or stew.

Vegetable Soups and Stews

Soups and stews, like curry, often start with a base of crushed tomatoes. Whether you’d like a thinner minestrone vegetable soup or a thicker stew with lots of legumes and potatoes, crushing up and boiling your leftover tomatoes is the best way to get started. Add more water for a thinner soup or a bit of flour for a nice thick stew.

From salads to pasta, tomatoes make everything better, but most people fail to see their full potential. If you feel like you’re not using them as much as you could, head to Hannah Sunderani’s food blog Two Spoons for some delicious inspiration.

Easy Gazpacho

Gazpacho is one of the first soups that come to mind when someone mentions tomatoes. Sunderani loves this traditional Spanish dish as much as the rest of us and she couldn’t resist putting her twist on the classic recipe.

Tomato Basil Soup

Speaking of delicious soups that you can make with tomatoes, Sunderani has another one in store. It’s no secret that basil and tomato are a match made in heaven and they perfectly balance each other out in this soup.

Mango Tomato Salsa

You can’t make a mistake mixing up tomatoes with other veggies because they perfectly complement most of them. Sunderani served them with asparagus this time, and she added some mango salsa to the mix.

Fully Loaded Tomato Toast

Adding fiber to your toast can be tricky, but tomatoes can get you there. Cherry tomatoes are also a great option, and Sunderani combined them with some vegan cream cheese and finely chopped garlic and cilantro.

Ever dreamed of getting involved in a massive food fight that involves launching 145,000 kilograms of tomatoes at your friends and other participants?

Well, look no further than the La Tomatina festival which is held in Bunyol, Spain every August!

This event is truly one of the most unique food festivals in the world. Instead of only gathering people to taste a certain food or dish, like most food festivals do, participants in La Tomatina don’t only eat the tomatoes which are typical to the Valencia region in Spain, but they also end up chucking them in a messy, fun-filled experience that ends with participants that are soaked in tomato juice and a city that smells like a giant gazpacho.

Participants in La Tomatina are only able to begin with their tomato-throwing bonanza after a participant has climbed to the top of a soapy pole and is able to bring down a ham which has been placed on top. It sounds crazy, but it’s true!

The population of Bunyol multiples greatly as 40,000 people invade its streets on the last Friday of every August to celebrate La Tomatina. In addition to the bizarre tomato-throwing tradition, other food-centric events during the festival include a paella cooking contest to see which participant can make the best version of this classic Valencian dish.

In short, if you love food and fun and don’t mind getting a little bit dirty, La Tomatina should be on your bucket list!

➡ 60 gramów mąki z ciecierzycy, 125 mililitrów wody, pół łyżki oliwy z oliwek, przyprawy: sól, pieprz, papryka wędzona, papryka suszona – wszystkie składniki dodajemy do miski i mieszamy do gładkiej konsystencji. In terms of flavor, cherry tomatoes are sweet and juicy. They have a less acidic quality than most typical tomatoes and add sweetness to a dish or a salad.

One great way in which you can use cherry tomatoes is to stuff them. You can hollow out the seeds and liquid of the cherry tomato and stuff them with ground meat, cheese, or spinach.

Grape Tomatoes

Grape tomatoes are oblong and shaped like a small grape. They’re smaller than cherry tomatoes.

Grape tomatoes have a taste that’s more similar to a traditional, large tomato. It’s more acidic and less sweet than cherry tomatoes. Any time you’d use a regular tomato, it’s possible to substitute them with these fun, bite-sized tomatoes.

They go great in salads and with dishes that involve stewed meats. Their fresh taste is a winner.

Which variety of tomato do you prefer?

While cherry and grape tomatoes are both useful and delicious, their utility and flavor are actually different.

Let’s take a look at some of the most important differences between the two.

Cherry Tomatoes

Cherry tomatoes are the larger of these two varieties of tomato. You can also distinguish them by their round, cherry-like shape.

➡ 60 gramów mąki z ciecierzycy, 125 mililitrów wody, pół łyżki oliwy z oliwek, przyprawy: sól, pieprz, papryka wędzona, papryka suszona – wszystkie składniki dodajemy do miski i mieszamy do gładkiej konsystencji. Dzisiaj wyjątkowo piszę do Was z przepięknej Pragi. Uciekam na dalsze zwiedzanie a Wam życzę pięknego dnia!
