Despite being a simple and tasty dish, frying eggs can be frustrating if you don’t know the proper technique for doing so. Many breakfasts have been ruined in the past when cooks weren’t sure of the best technique for frying an egg. It’s important not to break the yolk and not to burn the egg white, but how can we be sure to do it correctly? Here are some tips.

Coat the Pan With Butter or Olive Oil

No matter what type of fried egg that you want to make, a crucial first step is to coat your pan with either butter or olive oil. This ensures that the egg won’t get stuck to the pan, an issue that has frustrated lots of people trying to make breakfast.

Don’t Flip the Egg

Believe it or not, fried eggs usually turn out better if you don’t flip them. Flipping can cause the yolk to break, ruining your eggs. Instead, cover the egg if you want to cook the yolk more thoroughly.

Lower the Heat

Don’t make fried eggs at a too-high temperature! While the pan should be hot to start out with, lower the temperature to medium-low while the egg cooks. This will allow the egg to cook thoroughly while not burning.

Grocery shopping is a venture that can use up a lot of plastic if you aren’t careful. This non-biodegradable substance, which is often overused in food packaging, can end up piling up in landfills and on the Earth’s surface, polluting and contaminating the habitat in which we live. If you’re looking to be a conscious shopper and reduce your consumption of plastic while grocery shopping, take a look at these tips.

Buy Reusable Grocery Bags

Using plastic grocery bags is a huge source of consumption of this product, and a great way to cut down on this is to use reusable bags. These durable, affordable bags will completely cut out plastic use for carrying the food you buy at the store.

Use Your Own Produce Bags

Unfortunately, a lot of plastic is also used for packaging the loose fruits and vegetables that we buy at the store. Companies now, however, sell reusable produce bags that can be washed and reused time and time again!

Avoid Bottled Water

Another totally unnecessary use of plastic is in the bottling of water that is sold at the supermarket. Instead of buying huge packs of plastic-filled bottled water, why not buy your own washable and reusable water bottle?

Composting has become a common thing to do for many people, taking organic food waste and turning it into nutrient-rich soil for use in the garden. While most food scraps from our kitchens can be used in these compost piles, there are some things that you have to be careful to not add to the compost. Here are some of them.

Meat Scraps

It might be tempting to just throw scraps of meat that you don’t consume into the compost pile, but this can cause big problems. Meat attracts pests and animals that can invade your compost pile and it just doesn’t break down in a way that helps your compost.

If you haven’t heard that this is going to be an amazing year for blackberries, you’re hearing it now. Our berry patch was planted in 2011, and although it’s become more stylish as the years have past, it’s not always been what I’d call super productive. A couple years ago I trained the thornless ‘Chester’ canes into a simple parallel trellis of copper piping, and it has really helped to manage them. But the second thing I did may be the secret to the motherload. I stopped blowing my leaves, and instead raked all the leaves on the grass and the beds into this spot. So basically the blackberries (and a few raspberries) are all growing directly out of a giant compost pile. And they seem to be delighted about it! As you can see behind the beds, the canes are LOADED with flowers! Now, let’s be honest. The undergardeners and I can never really control ourselves to keep from eating them right out of the patch. But I’m praying that this year is the year we actually make that cobbler, 🙏🤞🙏🥧👩‍🌾👨‍🍳👦👦👦👧🥳🥳🥳. #berrypatch #inmygarden #yesterdaysgarden #raisedbedgardening #kitchengarden #veggiepatch #homegarden #myfrontyard #leafmold #compostpile #chesterblackberries #gardendesign #gardenswing #potager #americana #blackberries #homegrown #desperatelyseekingcobbler #growsomethinggreen #raisedbeds #gardenersworld #kale #garlic #cabbages #beansprouts #thehappygardeninglife #farmtotable #growyourown #gardendreams #lucysgardenlife

Dairy Products

Another group of animal products that you shouldn’t put into your compost pile is dairy. Yogurts, ice creams, milk, and other items should be disposed of differently because they will sour, rot, and potentially attract animals and other pests to your compost.

Cooking Oil

Oil is something that should be disposed of carefully in designated drop-off places and not added to your compost pile. Cooking oil doesn’t biodegrade like other plant products do and its smell can attract hungry animals to your compost, which can ruin it.

Now's the time! Fall is the best time to amend your soil for better growth and drainage in the spring. Adding Compost to Soil: Some experts recommend that compost be spread over the soil and not mixed in. This is because digging will disturb the delicate mycorrhizal fungi, which help plants access nutrients from deep in the earth. However, in clay or sandy soils, amending soil with compost will enhance the soil enough to warrant such disruption. If your soil has a good texture, you can simply spread the compost on the surface. Over time, rain, worms and other natural actions will wash the compost into the plant’s roots. If you are making your own potting soil, mix compost in 1 part compost with 1 part each peat, perlite, and top soil. A good rule of thumb on using soil and compost to perk up the garden is not to use more than 3 inches (7.6 cm.). Vegetable gardens benefit from this higher range unless you had already worked in the previous season’s yard waste. The moka pot, a favorite for making coffee in places like Latin America and Southern Europe, has gained traction as a trendy coffee device all over the world in recent years. Consisting of a simple stovetop device, it’s easy to make a strong cup of joe using the beloved moka pot.

However, there are some key errors that people unfamiliar with the machine’s design tend to make, especially when starting out. Be sure not to make these mistakes when brewing in a moka pot.

Fill the Pot with Cold Water

Do not fill the moka pot’s reservoir with cold water when making a batch of coffee with it! Why? Cold water takes longer to heat than warm or hot water, which can cause the ground coffee in the device’s middle chamber to burn and make bitter and unpleasant-tasting coffee.

Leave the Pot on the Burner After Brewing

As soon as the last of the finished coffee bubbles up and into the top chamber of the moka pot, remove it from the heat of the stove. If you leave the moka pot on the burner after brewing, your coffee will begin to boil, making it taste burnt and rancid.

Use Your Pot without Regular Cleaning

It’s all too easy to just keep reusing your moka pot without washing or cleaning it between uses. The best practice for using one, however, includes a thorough washing after every use to be sure that mold and taste-altering particles are prevented from developing in the pot.

Store-bought hummus is often described as being boring, industrial, and flavorless. It’s easy to see why. Sometimes, companies only add chickpeas, a little bit of tahini, and almost nothing else to spice up the flavor of their hummus.

However, if you don’t have time to make your own hummus and want to use a store-bought variety, that doesn’t mean that you have to suffer through terrible hummus. Here are three things to add to make it taste delicious.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is a key component of any delicious hummus creation, and you should definitely add a little bit to the store-bought variety to add tanginess. If not, the hummus ends up being bland.

Olive Oil

While most store-bought varieties of hummus contain some olive oil, they usually do not contain enough to give it the consistency that it should have. Add a tablespoon or so more to each batch, and your hummus will be much smoother.

Paprika

Any respectable hummus will be served with paprika, and this is an ingredient that store-bought hummus doesn’t usually contain. Just a few sprinkles of sweet paprika on top of your hummus can make all the difference in terms of its flavor.

Who doesn’t love a good dose of peanut butter? This creamy treat is best known as a sandwich filling, but the possibilities for peanut butter go way beyond the classic PB&J.

Why not try your peanut butter as a kitchen “swiss army knife?” Its uses and utility are endless, as these three creative uses for peanut butter demonstrate.

Fruit Dip

Fruit goes great with peanut butter, and we love using it as a dip for slices of fruit. Two of our favorite fruits to eat with peanut butter are apples and bananas, both of which are easily sliced and whose flavors are enhanced by the creamy spread.

Crepe Filling

Nutella and chocolate-filled crepes are all the rage these days, so why not try a little bit of peanut butter inside your next batch? We love melting peanut butter and then sticking it inside of these thin French pancakes as a special treat.

Ice Cream Topping

Hear us out on this one! Peanut butter actually works great as a topping for ice cream if you know which flavors to use it with. Adding a modest amount of peanut butter to a bowl of dark chocolate or vanilla ice cream is a fantastic idea, but maybe don’t try it with lemon sorbet!

Cutting down on fat in the kitchen can seem like a daunting proposition. Sometimes, recipes call for ingredients that seem like they simply cannot be replaced by a low-fat ingredient. While this may be true sometimes, there are some strategies that you can implement to make smart substitutions. Check these out.

Olive Oil For Butter

Often times, we opt for butter to moisten up a frying pan or as the main fat ingredient in a recipe. There are many situations where this high-fat, unhealthy ingredient can be replaced with olive oil, which is much better for you and lower in saturated fats.

Yogurt For Cream

Are you looking to prepare a recipe that calls from a heavy cream as part of its ingredients, perhaps in a sauce? Don’t be afraid to try using yogurt instead of cream for a lower-fat, healthier alternative.

Cottage Cheese For Cream Cheese

That’s right: cottage cheese, a less dense and fatty ingredient, can be substituted for cream cheese in a wide variety of recipes. The tangy, slightly creamy flavor that cream cheese provides can often be picked up by using cottage cheese instead.

Guacamole is one of the most in vogue dips out there right now. This avocado-based treat is so simple, however, it’s way too easy to find guacamole that has been made into something that is far away from what it should be.

These tips will help you avoid mistakes that will ruin your next batch of guacamole.

Don’t Use Garlic

Let us repeat: do not use garlic! It might seem tempting to add this ingredient to guacamole, but it will absolutely overwhelm the flavor of the dip and make it nearly impossible to eat. Just say no to garlic in guac.

Let Avocado Be the Star

The principal ingredient in guacamole is avocado, and this is for an important reason. The delicious, creamy texture and flavorful nature of guacamole are meant to be put on display in guacamole, so don’t over-add other ingredients like chiles or onions and make it disappear from the center stage.

Don’t Forget to Salt

Have you ever tried guacamole that tasted bland for some reason? The most likely explanation for this is a lack of salt. It’s important to add a little bit of salt to guacamole to enhance its flavor and make it pop.

As the years go by, more and more of a focus is put on reducing our consumption of meat. Eating fewer animal products has a vast variety of benefits, from reducing environmental strain on the planet to helping our own cardiovascular health.

If you are a meat eater who is looking for some tips to help you cut down on your consumption of meat, here are some simple tips that will get you on the right path.

Start Eating Beans

People often complain that nothing in a vegan or vegetarian replaces the richness and filling character of meat. We have found, however, that beans are great at filling you up and serving as a great “substitute” that possesses many of meat’s singular characteristics.

Plant-Based Meat Substitutes

As the years go by and more and more people cut meat out from their diets, more and more plant-based meat substitutes are available on the market. From tofu to tempeh to seitan, you’ll find something that takes meat’s place if you try hard enough.

It’s All About Mentality

If you go into your journey with the attitude that your eating experiences are going to get worse after cutting out meat, you are setting yourself up for a loss. Instead, be enthusiastic about all of the benefits that you’ll reap and all of the new flavors that you will try.

The moka pot, a favorite for making coffee in places like Latin America and Southern Europe, has gained traction as a trendy coffee device all over the world in recent years. Consisting of a simple stovetop device, it’s easy to make a strong cup of joe using the beloved moka pot.
