Store-bought pesto is always a convenient route when you are in a hurry and want to make a quick pasta dish. But true pasta lovers know that nothing beats homemade pesto. It is better compared to the jarred version in taste, consistency, and everything else. The recipe for homemade pesto is fairly simple, although getting it right can seem like an impossible task. But it doesn’t have to be if you use the following tips.

Use High-Quality Ingredients

Don’t opt for basic ingredients for your homemade pesto. If you want it perfect, you have to use high-quality stuff. This includes Genovese basil, Italian pine nuts, extra virgin olive oil, and either Parmesan or pecorino cheese.

Fresh Garlic is a Must

Garlic is an essential addition if you want to have a perfect pesto. You should only use fresh garlic, preferably spring garlic, and add a single clove to avoid pesto having an overpowering garlic taste.

Swap Food Processor for Mortar and Pestle

The food processor is the fastest and most convenient method for making pesto, but it isn’t the best one. To make perfect pesto, you will have to turn to manual methods of mortar and pestle. Making pesto with mortar and pestle allows you to achieve the proper texture and make individual flavors mesh better.

Taste as You Go

Finally, it is crucial to taste the pesto as you are making it. This will allow you to add the right amount of salt and adjust the ingredients until you get the perfect taste.

Many people have a general list of food items and ingredients that they buy regularly to have in stock at home. There may be cupboard staples and frequently used fridge items, so regularly stocking up on these items makes perfect sense. Create Some Exciting Desserts

Lime is such a versatile flavor and is so often used in many savory dishes, but is great in sweet contexts too. For example, a simple lime sorbet is a simple but sure way to impress guests.

Use as a Garnish

Whether you’re having friends over for some cocktails or you’ve cooked a fancy meal for date night, having some limes around to slice up as a garnish is a great way to add some appealing color and flavor to so many foods and drinks.

Making a fantastic chili is a lot easier than you might think. You only need to use quality ingredients, follow the recipe, and make sure to avoid these common mistakes.

Skipping the Browning

Browning the meat and veggies before assembling chili is the key. This way, you will get more flavor out of them and avoid undercooked elements in your chili.

Using the Wrong Spices

Spices are a key to great chili, so it is important to really nail this part. Make sure you use fresh spices and include chili powder, garlic powder, cumin, and oregano, among others.

Waiting Until the End to Season the Chili

You should always season your chili at the beginning or midway through the cooking process. This will allow all the flavors to mix together and blend properly. If you opt to season when the chili is already cooked, herbs and spices won’t do a good job of coming together.

Rushing It

The best kind of chili is slowly cooked at a low temperature. This method results in more flavor and tender meat. If you opt to rush the chili, you will probably end up with a disappointing batch.

Not Adding Toppings

Adding some topping to your chili will make it go over the top. Even something as simple as grated cheese or a dollop of sour cream will do the trick.

Roasted potatoes are a classic side dish. However, achieving that perfect crunch can sometimes be elusive. The secret ingredient to attaining this culinary delight? Baking soda. This might sound surprising, but a pinch of baking soda can transform your roasted potatoes from just good to irresistible. Let’s jump in.

Ingredients:

  • 4 large potatoes
  • 8 cups of water
  • 2 tablespoons of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
  • Olive oil for coating
  • Additional salt to taste
  • Optional: Fresh herbs or garlic for extra flavor

Instructions:

  1. Start by peeling and cutting the potatoes into cubes.
  2. Bring the water to a rapid boil. Add salt and baking soda.
  3. Add the cubed potatoes to the boiling water. Cook them until they are tender (about 10 min).
  4. After the potatoes are tender, strain them and let them air dry on a tray for a few minutes.
  5. Once slightly dried, drizzle them with olive oil and sprinkle with a bit more salt. Add additional seasonings if you’d like.
  6. Preheat your oven to 400°F. Spread the potatoes out in a single layer on a baking sheet.
  7. Roast the potatoes for about 45-60 minutes, or until they are golden and crispy. Halfway through the roasting time, flip the potatoes to ensure they brown evenly on all sides.

Crafting a great salad may sound simple, but sometimes, mixing the wrong ingredients can lead to a culinary catastrophe. To make sure you stay on track with your salad-making, here’s a list of four common salad combos to avoid.

Tomatoes and Lettuce

Let’s start with the classics. While tomatoes and lettuce may seem like a match made in salad heaven, they’re actually sworn enemies. Tomatoes release moisture that can turn your crisp lettuce into a wilted mess you’ll barely recognize. Keep these two separate to maintain crunchiness.

Cucumbers and Salt

If you’re looking for a refreshing crunch in your salad, cucumbers are your friends; but be careful when adding salt. Salt draws out moisture from cucumbers, making them extra watery. If you really have to add salt, do it just before serving to minimize sogginess.

Croutons and Dressing

Don’t you just love croutons in your salad? But while they add a delightful crunch, tossing them with dressing too early can lead to a soggy disaster. Keep your croutons crisp by adding them right before serving (or serving them on the side).

Delicate Greens and Heavy Dressings

Delicate greens like spinach or arugula can wilt under the weight of heavy dressings like Caesar or ranch. Go for lighter dressings or dress your salad lightly to keep from overwhelming your greens.

Many people want to include a good variety of fresh vegetables in their diet. While delicious meals can be made around vegetables, sometimes just having some simple vegetables on the side is all you want and need. Boiling vegetables to have as a side is very common, but lots of people would choose to steam them instead. Here’s a lowdown on both options.

What Does Each Include?

Boiling is a very simple procedure that is capable of cooking most vegetables. Simply placing them in a pot of boiling water for a certain time will make them soft and edible. Steaming, however, doesn’t place the vegetables in the water, but instead they’re placed in a basket above boiling water. The steam from the water cooks the veg without them coming into contact with the water itself.

Steaming May Be Healthier

There’s a common viewpoint that boiling vegetables leads to some of their precious nutrients and vitamins seeping out into the water and therefore being lost. Steaming avoids this issue.

Steaming Takes Much Longer

To ensure the vegetable is fully cooked and not too tough, it will often need to be steamed for a lot longer than it would need to be boiled. If time is tight or energy bills are of concern, then this is an unfortunate aspect of the steaming process.
