Olive oil-infused coffee is the hottest new trend in the coffee community. While not a novelty, adding olive oil to coffee has really taken off ever since Starbucks presented its new line of olive oil-infused coffee products called Oleato earlier this year. But while many coffee purists are appalled by the concept of adding olive oil to coffee, the idea isn’t actually as bad as it might sound.

Adding Fat to Coffee is Nothing New

When you add olive oil to your coffee, you are actually introducing fat to it, and this is nothing new. People have been mixing butter in their coffee for a while, and using full-fat milk or heavy cream in your coffee produces a similar effect.

There are Benefits to Olive Oil Coffee

Olive oil comes with lots of obvious benefits on its own, but there is one added benefit when you mix it with coffee. The caffeine from the coffee absorbs the fat, which results in its slower release and provides a longer period of energy to the consumer.

It Tastes Good

Don’t judge it until you try it. The olive oil actually works pretty well with coffee taste-wise. It gives it a rich taste with nutty notes while enhancing the flavor. Some olive oil coffee enthusiasts even claim that it goes down smoother and is sweeter.

Have you ever gone to the grocery store to buy olive oil and not known if you should purchase extra virgin or regular olive oil? We’ve definitely been there are we’re here to tell you which one is right for your cooking needs.

What’s the Difference?

The difference isn’t just in the taste of the oils, it has to do with the way the oil reacts to the heat. Olive oil is lighter in color and it’s cheaper than extra virgin olive oil. The oil is a blend of cold-pressed olive oil and the natural impurities have been removed chemically or through heat. It’s also more neutral in flavor and it can handle higher temperatures than extra-virgin olive oil.

Extra virgin olive oil hasn’t been exposed to chemical or heat treatment, which makes it a higher quality oil that has more flavor, with a darker color. Only the best olives are used for extra virgin olive oil. The oil also has a lower smoke point because it hasn’t been refined, which makes it easier to burn.

Which Should You Buy?

If you’re planning on using the oil for cooking, you should get regular olive oil and if you want it for dressing or dip, extra-virgin is your best bet. If you prefer the taste of extra-virgin olive oil it’s perfectly fine to use it for cooking, just be careful to keep an eye on your food to prevent it from burning.

Arthritis is just the worst, isn’t it? This sometimes-debilitating condition which arises as inflammation in people’s joints, is a common ailment in both older and younger people who find their mobility decreased due to the pain from the disease.

Fortunately, your diet can help combat the inflammation and effects of arthritis. Here are three foods that you’ll definitely want to add to your diet to keep arthritis and its pain away!

Fatty Fish

Fatty fish, such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel, are a great choice for those suffering from arthritis. The omega-3 fatty acids contained in these seafood choices are great at combating inflammation that results of arthritis.

Olive Oil

Looking for a go-to cooking oil to use as an arthritis sufferer? Look no further than olive oil! In addition to healthy fatty acids, it also contains oleocanthal, a natural compound that is found in non-inflammatory drugs, but in a completely natural package.

Store-bought hummus is often described as being boring, industrial, and flavorless. It’s easy to see why. Sometimes, companies only add chickpeas, a little bit of tahini, and almost nothing else to spice up the flavor of their hummus.

However, if you don’t have time to make your own hummus and want to use a store-bought variety, that doesn’t mean that you have to suffer through terrible hummus. Here are three things to add to make it taste delicious.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is a key component of any delicious hummus creation, and you should definitely add a little bit to the store-bought variety to add tanginess. If not, the hummus ends up being bland.

Olive Oil

While most store-bought varieties of hummus contain some olive oil, they usually do not contain enough to give it the consistency that it should have. Add a tablespoon or so more to each batch, and your hummus will be much smoother.

Paprika

Any respectable hummus will be served with paprika, and this is an ingredient that store-bought hummus doesn’t usually contain. Just a few sprinkles of sweet paprika on top of your hummus can make all the difference in terms of its flavor.

When you go to the store to buy olive oil, are you aware of the fact that there are several different varieties of this popular cooking oil?

From the highest-quality option of extra-virgin olive oil to the little-known, cheap version of this “liquid gold” which is denominated as being “refined,” there are lots of different options for olive oil buyers. Here is your explanation of the differences between each variety.

Extra-Virgin

Extra-virgin olive oil is the highest quality variety of the product that you can buy. Not treated in any way or altered by chemicals, it retains the essence of the olives that are used to make it. Be careful when using it for cooking, however, as its low smoke means that it can burn easily.

Virgin

Virgin olive oil is similar to the extra-virgin oil, with the only slight difference being in the content of oleic acid that it contains. It’s also not treated with any type of chemicals or unnatural processes, but might be slightly more astringent and bitter due to the higher acid content.

Refined

Refined olive oil, which is often sold as “pure” olive oil, is a lower-quality product than virgin varieties. These “pure” oils are usually made mostly with refined oil, which has been treated to remove impurities and may contain a slight amount of virgin oil. It is, however, a better option for cooking due to its higher smoke point.

There are tons of different cooking to choose from. Which is best for frying? What’s recommended for salad dressing. All of the choices may seem a bit overwhelming. But don’t worry, we’re here to help. Check out this simple cooking oil guide.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Perhaps the most popular of all the oils, olive oil is perfect to drizzle atop pizza or whisk into a salad dressing. Due to the fact that olive oil can start to burn at a lower heat than other oils, it is not recommended for frying.

Coconut Oil

This creamy oil has a rich, nutty flavor that blends deliciously into Asian style dishes or curries. It’s also a great vegan substitute for butter while baking.

Peanut Oil

If you’re interested in cooking up a batch of crispy fried chicken, stick with peanut oil. Refined peanut oil has a neutral taste and a very high smoke point, making it a perfect choice for deep frying.

Avocado Oil

Despite being on the pricier side compared to other options, this oil really has it all. It’s rich in healthy fats, has a delicately buttery flavor for drizzling, and it can be used for sautéing as well.

Cutting down on fat in the kitchen can seem like a daunting proposition. Sometimes, recipes call for ingredients that seem like they simply cannot be replaced by a low-fat ingredient. While this may be true sometimes, there are some strategies that you can implement to make smart substitutions. Check these out.

Olive Oil For Butter

Often times, we opt for butter to moisten up a frying pan or as the main fat ingredient in a recipe. There are many situations where this high-fat, unhealthy ingredient can be replaced with olive oil, which is much better for you and lower in saturated fats.

Yogurt For Cream

Are you looking to prepare a recipe that calls from a heavy cream as part of its ingredients, perhaps in a sauce? Don’t be afraid to try using yogurt instead of cream for a lower-fat, healthier alternative.

Cottage Cheese For Cream Cheese

That’s right: cottage cheese, a less dense and fatty ingredient, can be substituted for cream cheese in a wide variety of recipes. The tangy, slightly creamy flavor that cream cheese provides can often be picked up by using cottage cheese instead.

If you’re familiar with the Mediterranean diet, you know that one of the cornerstones to this uber-healthy way of eating is olive oil.

Olive oil is heavily used in Mediterranean countries such as Spain, Italy, and Greece, and it’s considered the “liquid gold” of the region. Not only is it delicious, but it’s also seriously healthy. Here are some of the reasons why it is simply the healthiest cooking oil you can choose.

It’s Full of Healthy Fats

Olive oil has fat just like any other cooking oil, but the difference is is that most of the fats in olive oil are “healthy” fats. It’s full of monounsaturated fats that don’t affect your body negatively like the saturated fats found in other oils do.

It Has Tons of Antioxidants

We love choosing foods with antioxidants due to their free-radical fighting, cancer-preventing, and inflammation-reducing qualities. Olive oil is a great source of antioxidants that your body will appreciate.

It’s Super Heart-Healthy

Oil and heart ailments don’t have to be synonymous. In fact, olive oil is actually very healthy for your heart. It has compounds that reduce artery blockages as well as other compounds that can reduce the risk of heart disease.

Olive oil is the base of so many dishes. Whether you’re sauteing or roasting with it, drizzling it on plain bread, or making a dressing out of it, it’s super versatile and has an amazing and complex flavor profile.

If you’re looking to take your olive oil up a notch, all you have to do is infuse it. These are by far some of the best and most versatile flavors, so make these infusions and watch your cooking go to the next level.

Savory

This super savory oil is perfect for people who really love bold flavors. First, peel 2-3 garlic cloves and put them into a jar. Add 1-2 bay leaves, dry or fresh, along with 1 sprig of rosemary, thyme, or any other hard herb that you like. Pour over the olive oil and allow to infuse.

Spicy

This olive oil is perfect for cooking if you want a spicy note but don’t have any fresh peppers on you. Add in 1-2 dried peppers of your choice, and some chili flakes if you really want to go crazy. Pour over the olive oil and get ready to spice up your life!

Bright

For a super bright and acidic olive oil, add in the peels of 1 whole lemon and pour over olive oil. This infused olive oil is perfect for salad dressings and more.
